We like it to help with blade heights, clean tap out at the finish, and the fact you still have to square. It's is much easier than rowing on the square, and provides many of the same benefits. We usually don't have flat water, so there is some advantage there too. We mix it in on a lot of our longer pieces, the boys typically hold the same pace they do with a full square.

Nicely done both of you. I recommend watching the video at 1/2 speed, and freeze it throughout at the crucial parts like the catch and release. Some strokes are very good, others the timing is out side to side, or entering the water. There was some wake that affected you. More practice and you guys will fix the parts that are not consistent. Your strokes match up very well.

Great work today troublemakers. If you have time, watch the video at 1/2 speed or slower, and stop and start it at the catch and finish. A few things I notice are: Alicea, you are carrying your blades too low on the recovery, so you have to dip your hands at the catch so that you can square them. This causes you to square to slowly, and on a few strokes, not get square until the blade is in the water. You are also grabbing with your arms at the catch to get connection. You need to leave your arms long, and hang off the handles on the first part of the drive. McKenzi does a good job of hanging off her oars. McKenzi: you need to tap your blades out more evenly and cleanly. You do a good job of hanging off your oars, but your first move at the catch is to open your back slightly to get connection. In essence you are doing with your back, what Alicea is doing with her arms on the catch. Both of you need to move your foot stretchers toward stern, Alicea more so. We want to see your shins vertical at the catch when the blades are in the water. Also you are both starting your leg drive prior to the oars being buried and connected. This causes you to "miss" water, and effectively shortens your stroke. These are all technique issues that even world class rowers battle, so be mindful of that, and we will improve each time out. I thought you guys looked great for your second row together! I apologize if I have spelled your names wrong.

Nicely rowed Ladies, considering the equipment issues. Avery, you are still lunging at the catch, and you are squaring a little late. Grace, you are getting your blades buried too slow, and sometimes lifting them before you drop them. Paris, you are leaning too far forward at the catch, and forcing your hands to low, which is causing the blade to go up before you drop it in the water. Sam, great job steering was great and on the square with a broken oar was impressive.

Nice job today guys. Watch the video at .5 or .25 speed if you have time. You can notice the slight differences in timing more easily. One thing that stands out to me is that Ryan was not rigged well to match up, blame that on me. You can see his catch and finish angles are different. We can fix that easily by adjusting the equipment. You can also notice the boat rocking side to side on some of the strokes as you come up to the catch. I think that will go away if we match up better on the recovery, and release the blade cleanly at the finish.

If you play this at .50 speed notice how Max is coming up the slide quicker than Ryan, and starting his drive before Ryan does. Eli and Connor are following Max well, but we need to be following Ryan. Also notice that Ryan is doing a better job of not opening to quickly, but he is missing a lot of water at the catch. He is starting his drive while the blades are still in the air. Eli needs to continue to work on consistency of his blade depth. All four rowers are showing a lot of separation between their hands which either causes bad blade depth and boat set, or is in reaction to bad blade depth and boat set. Overall, great improvement guys.

This is the best piece that I have seen you guys row as a lineup, despite the rough water. What I recommend is watching the video at .50 or .25 speed, and stopping it at the catches and releases. Several things I noticed are. Ryan, you are opening to quickly. You need to wait until your blades are buried, then drive with your legs, prior to opening your back. The slo mo from the catch shows this. Max, your starboard blade is way too high due to you dipping your hand at the catch. This is causing a lot of timing problems on the catch. Also notice the lack of focus on following Ryan, as you move your head around constantly. You are coming up the slide faster than Ryan, despite him being bigger than you as well. Eli, you shortened your catch enough to help the angles match at the catch. I would like to see you square a little earlier as you are slower to do this than the other boys. We also need to focus on you releasing the blade at the finish when Max does. Your stroke is longer on this end too, so you and Conner are still in the water when Ryan and Max have released. Conner, you are still grabbing too early with your arms. Lets try to hang off the oars longer, and keep the blades buried longer, this will extend your stroke and help you match the other boys better.

Orey, I think you are opening to quickly. If you run the video at .25 speed and pause it at the catch, you will see that your first movement is to start opening your body. You are doing this before the blades are buried, likely looking for a quick connection to the water. I think you should work on getting a little more body prep, and doing some legs only rowing to try establishing a new movement pattern. The blade work can use some improvement as well, but you are not far off on any of these things. Small refinements.

Ladies, I would suggest watching this at .25 speed and stopping the video right at the catch, and at the release on a few of the strokes. You will see that Suzanne is dropping her blades in more quickly at the catch, and Kristi is starting her drive before her blades are buried. On the release, Suzanne is "dumping" the handles to her hips, which is ripping the blade out of the water, and upsetting the boat balance. The timing of the release is off as well. Suzanne, try to finish with your hands higher on your chest, then just tap down a little, you don't need that much movement to get the blades out. Kristi, you will also notice that your hands are pretty far apart at times as you are looking for balance. You two should row very well together. I think that if your releases matched and were clean, the boat would be better set on the recovery, and your catches would improve. Nothing to be discourage about, we are looking at slo mo to find the problems.

You are right about that lack of early square Michael. If you watch the video slowed to .5 or .25 you can see the difference in catch timing, because of the lack of getting square. You can also notice that the releases are not quite matched. The speed up and down the slide is also a bit off. I realize you two don't have much experience rowing together, so the timing is going to be off. Overall though, you two moved the boat pretty well.

Charles. Watch this at .25% speed, and you will be able to see some of the issues more clearly. As we talked about yesterday you are not maintaining your body prep when you get to the catch, you are leaning forward farther. This can be seen best at around the :45 - :50 segment. The balance of the boat is really getting thrown off because of this, causing more problems throughout the stroke. Notice that your hand levels are are all over the place because you are trying to balance the boat. You are also relying too much on your arms, and using them to quickly in the sequence. Watch the video of Patrick in slo-mo. Notice how relaxed he is. After he rocks his hips over and establishes body prep, he maintains it, and just lets the boat run under him until he gets to the catch. Now for the good news. That was your second time in a high end racing shell, and you are far ahead of what would be considered typical for the experience level. This is hard stuff, and you are getting it very quickly!

Thank you. We did our best with her, but she was truly remarkable on her own. She lived nearly full speed until the last 2 months or so of her life, just short of her 15th bday!
