I love Pauls videos. I'm a surf kayaker but Pauls videos are really the only video tutorial resource I have found that can help. Different craft but still a lot of it crosses over. Anyone know of other similar tutorials?
Nice! Perfect stability and good hold and maneuverability. Which fin size did you use?
I like the 4 inch. I put the 3 inch in and I was sliding out too much. In smaller weaker surf maybe the 3 inch will be fun but the 4 inch has worked for me in all sizes. 👍🏼
i think this is the most clear, simple demonstration of the roll i have seen-thanks very much, i think it will help me. ps: how do you like that new plastic Macski? Thanks, Dennis
@@dennisbarry6014 thank you! My hip snap still needs work. Needs to be aggressive and powerful. I just took the plastic Macski Phoenix out in the worst choppy windy conditions and it was great! 20 mph onshore winds again today so that’s my choice. I’ll be giving a full review very soon.
So fun!! Way to go
Looks great
I started with a perception then bought an infinity Clark foam board had a blast till I was 71. Also grew up surfing and was an avid kayaker so the waveski was a natural. Have fun out there
Good to hear. We surf kayak with a 72 year old we call The Big Kahuna. My next video is on Waveskis so hopefully that will informative for the SOT paddlers and maybe a few will make the transition.
Pretty good for their 1st time. Looks like they had a blast on the Phoenix!
Nice video! I have to try this one day!
Absolutely. We'll shoot a video. 👍🏼
Awesome! Well done all!
Fantastic video many thanks 👍 I'm looking forward to the next
Nice video, Thanks for sharing.
Came across you video collection this week and love it. I've been surfing for decades south of Atlantic City and with knee/back injuries converted to surf kayaking. Its a little challenging in the winter to find the right equipment to wear. It looks like you have a dry suit. What are your recommendations for winter surf wear? Plus glove and feet? Cheers, greg
Thanks Greg. I get down to Monmouth/ Belmar and I think I'll be there in the next month. I can go further down as I know a few guys as well. I only use a 5/4 Wetsuit with hood. The warm ones! 8mm Solite boots. 3mm Gloves on my Waveski. Are you skirted in? Sit Inside? For that I only have a Dry Top over 3mil Neoprene BUT If I owned a dry suit I WOULD wear it. That's my next purchase. I will be hosting a short Waveski Session this SAturday at Gilgo Beach here in NY. Next Saturday is something in NJ and I'm not sure I can make it but maybe you can. PLease stay in touch and take down my info from my profile. Email me if you liie and I'll give you my cell. [email protected] kccny.org/events/surf-kayak-beach-day-park-and-play/
Awesome!
Episode 5: Waveskis! It's in the works.
Nice job. I made a similar assumption about IC boats being better for smaller waves. Someone pointed out to me that Alejo Pacheco would disagree. He kills it in an IC boat surfing large waves.
Yes! IC Boats are great on monster waves! Alejo, Dessie, Hobson ride some monsters! Hopefully the beginners will see the notes in the video description.
No fins=easier launch when you knuckle walk those into the water.
Great point! Especially in that steep NJ & NY high tide slope.
Hey Richie, great video over all. Just a heads up "eskimo" is a slur against inuit peoples and we don't call rolls "eskimo rolls" anymore.
Thanks for that comment. I'm always up for being educated. What’s the general term these days? Kayak Roll? Roll? I'll use that moving forward. I'm all about being inclusive and welcoming. And thanks for watching!
Oops we do in Australia
Brilliant 👏 thanks for posting. I'm knew to this type of boat. I ditched the hip harness and replaced it with 2 knee straps. Much better control.
Excellent! Good to hear. I'll be doing a Waveski video as my next one. We'll talk about that for sure.
I'm interested in the Ackless Psylock but very little info available online. Can you share any info?
Hi Tom, Doug Petock, the owner is pretty responsive thru his website. he travels so it might be a week. I will be riding one in May, maybe sooner, in New Jersey and I'll do a proper review and hopefully shoot some video of me and Doug. 5 Fin options! Doug rides no fins, but he's like 300 lbs. I would do a twin fin set up. I know there is a used one in Massachusetts I think. Let me know if I can help out in anyway.
@@richie_waverider Great, thank you Richie
@@tomjudge7879 facebook.com/share/3TytLrgYDaE3xSKy/?mibextid=79PoIi
I'd make an offer on that but I'm in Melbourne FL. Thank you anyway
Also, would the minicell footblock mod you showed on the Strike work on the Kaos to alleviate the footwell pain issue (I've seen that mentioned in other reviews as well)?
I noticed that your feet and footstraps are very wide apart. You will get better performance if you get your feet as close together as possible. The same applies to the seating position; the higher you can sit, the better performance you can extract; the more leverage you apply. Though, of course, to use a horse riding analogy, a beginner cannot start out riding a racehorse. Consequently, a beginner and even an intermediate will feel less stable with feet together and a higher seat position. Stability, however, opposes manouverability. And which is why beginners start out on something which is stable and progress to something as unstable as possible. Cheers
Great points and you summed it up why I'm not sitting on a seat riser yet. All things I'll talk about in my next video. Also, 26 inches wide is my comfortable tippy point, which is too wide for the pros but more stable for me. I'm not ready to go narrower, sit higher or even use a shorter ski yet. I haven't taken it out in 3 months as I've been using the Surf Kayak. Shame on me LOL! Thanks for this. I'm going to reference this. I've got to get started on the next video which should have probably been #2-Choosing a Waveski and Surf Kayak. Cheers!
@@richie_waverider I'm glad that you got some inspiration for your next video. I have a bit of an interest in waveskis as I designed and manufactured waveskis in Australia in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Cheers
How does the Banshee stack up against the Vamp IC? I’ve got a Mojo and find it sluggish and clumsy…need to get rid of it.
I was told by Peter at Mega that the Banshee has less tail rocker than the Vamp and even the Mojo, and yes faster. 61cm wide. Beveled rails and a flat planning hull. I do have at least 4 people who choose the Banshee over the Vamp. Former owners and one who currently owns a Vamp and wants to surf my Banshee over his all the time. They all state it's faster. I'm no expert but I hope that helps.
@@richie_waverider Much appreciated mate, this is a massive help! I did opt for the Banshee originally but was offered the Mojo also, should have gone with my gut instinct and got the Banshee. Cheers!
@@paddlepaddlepaddle8147 I messaged Norman from this video and was convinced The Banshee was for me and the types of waves I surf. kzread.info/dash/bejne/c4d2wbhroLDQdpM.htmlsi=KskIFEzgZAsTZw01
Great video thanks 🙏
I started paddle surfing on an Ocean Kayak Frenzy. It was the best SOT at the time because even though it was wide…it was short, so it could turn hard at the bottom. It go to the point where I was turning it so hard at the bottom, I was losing the rail and would slide sideways. Then somebody let me try a Wakeski and it was over. I worked my way up to custom designed/Specified Wavema ster Customs with full carbon fiber Styx paddles. Until I became a California refugee in the mid 00’s and fled the state. I do miss it.
Not sure where you are now, but if you are on the East Coast, USA ever please drop us a line. Also my next video (Episode 5) will be on Waveskis!
Good video! I'm looking for a sit on top kayak but in my country, Spain, the kayaks you recommend are not available, it's a shame, because I'm in love with the Cobra Strike. I have a KS Waveski and I was looking for a kayak for calmer days. The available kayaks that I have found are the following: pyranha surf jet, watersport scooter x, tootega pulse 85 and rotomod mojito. What would you recommend me? Thank you!
Hola! Yes that's a shame not available. The Pyrahna Surf Jet is popular here and have more room in the cockpit. Without a real surf fin they all are hard to turn but great for smaller weak days. I have glued a plastic fin to the bottom of a kayak once and it helped! :) Our friend Bill now uses a Longboard Macski Waveski instead of his Cobra Strike which gives alot of float and can really paddle fast and ride very small waves. I do believe MacSki USA ships his "Phoenix" globally but I'm sure it's expensive. Let me know what you find.
Nice video Richie!
Thanks Paul! I'll see you guys in NC I hope. Bill and I are driving down.
@@richie_waverider I have some tight timing this year.. probably try to make Saturday.
Thanks Richie for sharing great infos and tips with all the paddling community! This video touches some real points and I'm curious to read comments and feedbacks from other paddlers too 🤩👏👏👏
It's a real journey and a learning experience. It's great we have Aò! to help us though it.
Hi everyone, here's some comments from the SurfKayak World Facebook Group about paddle length. Jac T: 182 for my surf kayak, and found it much better than my old 198 bur took some getting used to. Ross K: I use a 191cm in a 25.6" wide SOT. I'm about 5'7". I could probably use a shorter paddle just as well. I have also used longer paddles (200cm), and they worked fine. Honestly, I believe people overthink paddle choice. Sean M: A shorter paddle is less likely to get hit by the pitching lip of a wave. But there are downsides to having a short paddle: Less effective forward stroke for the paddle out, less leverage when rolling. IMO, a beginner surf kayaker would be well advised to go a bit longer for these reasons. I also prefer a paddle blade that has a lot of float (foam core) to it to help with getting the blade to the surface when setting up for a roll. The older I get the more help I need! I almost always do an extended paddle roll or even a pawlata roll these days, especially if the water I'm rolling up in is super aerated. Peter B: I prefer a slightly longer paddle as it gives me more leverage to throw the boat around and a larger blade for more power (though you need to be a bigger person to handle a bigger blade). Also Easier for rolling. And to add a note from Sean’s note, I don’t like a floaty paddle, I prefer a normal one. It all depends on your ability, style and preference. Best try other people’s paddles first with different lengths, size blade, feather, cranked and with or without foam core, weight and flex of paddle as they all make a difference! Nicole L: 194cm because that was the shortest reasonably priced paddle I could find -- 2 pc fibreglass with plastic blades, can take a beating on the rocks here and costs half of what a proper waveski paddle costs. NRS 'Ripple' paddle. Jose B: 198 surf kayak ..Im 192 cm Sam B: Just switched from 200 to 188 in a long surf boat. Quicker acceleration to catch waves and feels much less cumbersome on the wave. Extended paddle roll (pawlata) for me, which still works fine with the shorter paddle. Paul S: • I have tried 180-197cm. Shorter definitely feels better esp on a wave. I am running 197cm at moment as I need to practice my roll. Longer gives leverage ease on rolling. Tim B: 194cm, I’m 172cm in height. I used to use a 184cm but then I got into white water kayaking and the longer paddle needed to clear the deck of a creek boat just felt better on a waveski as well so I’ve stuck with that length. I also prefer less feather on my blades to make rolling both left and right side easier. A 0degree feather is actually very nice for WW but 45 is a bit easier to catch waves in offshore conditions on the Waveski. Alessandro B: 190cm surfkayak, 185cm waveski Tom W: • 190cm at 6’1” tall
Woah cool wave surfing. You really carving em up. Looks really fun. I might have to try that sometime. 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽

It looks like TJ from Florida, USA is going to Worlds Competition at Nahoon Reef this year. He's a very passionate fellow surfer here on the east coast, USA.
Can I ask how much you weigh and how you find the mega edge for leg room and stability they look really tight in the feet area compared to the older style neutron ps great videos 👍👍👍👍
Unfortunately I never surfed the Nuetron. I’m 5’ 9”. 185-190 lbs. 35” waist. 11 shoe size. Edge has a lot more room than the Matrix and The Boost. I couldn’t fit in the Matrix. The Edge was the next size up and I'm not big enough for the Halo. I really need to get out there and practice in it. It’s got that V bottom in the tail so it’s a little tippy at first, but nothing crazy. I raised my seat a little more than 2 inches to lean out more get more on the edge. I do plan to do a video showing the bottoms as they all have a nice V and beveled bottoms which can add to being tippy but so easy to get on the rail. I also made this when researching them. Surf Kayak Length & Width Specs Mega Matrix 228cm x 62cm 7’ 5” x 2’ .5” Max paddler weight = 90kg (198 LB) Mega Boost 232cm x 63cm 7’ 7” x 2’ .8” Max paddler weight = 90kg (198 LB) Mega Edge 232cm x 65.5cm 7’ 7” x 2’ 1.7” Max paddler weight = 102kg (222 LB) Mega Banshee 272cm x 61cm 8’ 11” x 2’ Max Paddler weight = 115kg (250) Mega Halo 232cm x 65.5cm Max paddler weight = 110kg (240 LB) Proton 233cm, 65.5cm Max paddler weight = 110kg (240 LB) Mega Scarab 235 cm x 68 cm Max paddler weight = 110kg (240 LB) Megatron 244 cm x 68cm Max paddler weight = 120kg (264LB) Hobson Spirit 226cm x 62.7cm Max paddler weight = 92kg (202LB)
That’s great Richie thank you I’m 5’11 around 200lb size 36 waist same shoe size there is one second hand near me for sale I’ve been thinking of looking at but wasn’t sure I’d fit past the thigh braces but think I’m going to take a look as I’m surfing the valley storm plastic surf kayak at the moment and fancy the upgrade to composite 👍👍👍
Excellent! If you're ever outside of New York City you can try mine as well. @@stephenharley3862
Hi Richie just another question on the mega edge does your front pillar have a section cut out at the bottom so your heals touch each other and allow more foot room 🤔🤔🤔🤔
@@stephenharley3862 the X Tech and higher layups don’t have a center pillar. Just a small section at the very nose so your feet have plenty of room. The Banshee X Tech model is the same as well.
Well done! Definitely helpful for expanding interest in surf paddling. The northeast has been losing waveskiers/surf kayakers as folks age out. Need to bring in newer folks to the sport!
Great comments from our East Coast, USA Surf Kayak & Waveski Facebook Group: Richie Guerrero Waveski Surf Kayaker I really enjoyed your second video. You were able to demonstrate the reasons why the 3 boats surf so differently -- and they really do! -- when I had not quite understood why. Something which might be useful to note, is that the more 'sit inside' type SOT surf kayaks (Kaos and Strike) don't fit you well unless you are thin or have a man's build. I have the problem of being tall, heavier, and female build, so the Kaos was a tight fit for me but do-able. The Strike is very narrow and was really uncomfortable for me. The Perception 5.0 was nice because I could adjust the leg length correctly and I didn't have to squeeze into it and get bruises on my hips. As you might imagine, I upgraded from a Kaos to a waveski eventually... all the SOT kayaks are very heavy and awkward to carry. I had a lot of trouble turning the Kaos easily, because of the problem you noted with fins too far back. I ended up riding it as a twin with 2 larger fins forward and no centre fin. My profile pic on here shows me surfing the Kaos -- it was a lot of fun in rough water but just too heavy for me.
Another great informative video, Thanks Ritchie
It is not the rocker in the nose that keep you from nose-diving. A long tail gets lifted by the wave and drills you into the bottom of the ocean.
Yes that too. The shorter the length behind the seat, the less chance of that happening. Thanks for the comment. 👍🏼
Thank you for the great video Richie. I wasn’t familiar with the 5.0. Nice to learn about it. I’m a life long stand up surfer who started surf kayaking two years ago. I’m having a ball on an older Kaos. The stability and paddling efficiency are nice, and the lenient rocker allows me to shoot straight down the face on steeper waves without pearling. It has more of a long board feel and ride than the Strike, which seems more agile. I also have a Strike with no foot straps or thigh straps that I haven’t used in a while. This video has inspired me to take it out again and see how I like it. I’m curious, has anyone taken the Kaos or Strike on a river?
Dude! Thanks for that description of the Kaos like a longboard. I get it. Some folks were never standup surfers so they haven’t ridden different types. We’re going to do some more videos to feature more sit on tops when it gets warmer. Also the designer of the strike surfed it with no fin so I’m sure it could do some river running. 🤙🏼
A very nice intro to plastic boats. Some minor points - the Cobra has 6 scupper holes, not 4, so it drains extremely fast. A back band in combination with a foam foot rest or adjustable foot rest allows you to adjust for your size, and also microtune your position both to move you forward or back. This lets you change the center of your weight which is very important. The adjustable footrest alone on a boat like the 5.0 only allows you to adjust by moving your position farther back. I believe the Cobra actually works better on larger, steeper waves rather than small mushy ones. The reduced nose rocker does require more of a diagonal takeoff on steep waves. And IMO the Cobra is flat-out the most stable boat in breaking/lumpy/crazy waves due to its unique undercut grooved rails. Finally, SOTs are easier to launch and land in shorebreak waves than any SIK or waveski. On some days that's important.
Great info Ross! I also forgot to mention that the Cobra Strike was designed by a Surf Kayaker with decades of professional experience. Maybe someone knows more about the other kayaks as well.
Really great video! Love it! Some day I got to try this!
Thank You! I'm on Long Island and usually have a spare kayak. Episode #2 is being worked on and will be live next week.
Good job. I like that you walk the line between just a kayaking video and a beginner's tutorial. I look forward to the next one.
Like to see cobra strike in action. Never seen one . I use mine and love the fun. I have and still surf for 60 years. Kayaking waves is so different. 2 ft. Wave looks 4ft.
yes! I'm putting together a video RIGHT NOW! But only have a few GoPro Clips. It's way too cold here now and nobody wants to film on the beach LOL. Come spring I'll definitely get some footage of the Strike. I enjoy the Cobra Strike too.

What are the specs on those AO fins you're rockin?
Hi Paul. For the Banshee since it's got a little more length than a standard HP, I like 2.5 inch fins in all three fin boxes. Dead center in the boxes gets me thru large and small surf. I played around for a while and settled on this setup.
Geat video, mate looks a great spot
