Hi Chris, I tried this and there is a small progress. Plugged the hub in and the front light blinks red and dies off as it blinks. There is another capacitor that looks like the one you change in the video, should I change that as well? Any other ideas?

Sorry to say, but this did not work for us. Our Insteon hub has 100 uF/35 V capacitors, not the 47 uF/50 V ones shown in this video. Maybe Insteon updated once they realized the initial capacitors were a problem. Our hub has stopped working - red light. We found this video and ordered/changed the capacitors, excited based on all of the positive responses. But for us it was a no go. Insteon’s website seems to be gone and so my husband thinks the problem is them and not our unit. If anyone has an opinion/advice, we would appreciate it. Looks like we are changing over to Lutron.

Wanted to add some additional information. I replaced all three nearby capacitors - C7, C11, C13. The caps in my hub are marked as 100uF and 35V. I replaced them with 100uF 50V just to be on the safe side... I think it is from 2018 - 2019, so suggest others consider the bigger caps if making this repair. I don't know what else (if anything) changed on the board.

  • @marially3

Hi. I think I have the same unit as you - mine are also marked 100uF 35V. Did your repair work? Unfortunately I ordered the ones recommended in this video, but will reorder if your repair was successful. If so, can you tell me where you got them? Thanks.

You no longer have to "start from scratch" if you are unable to 'revive' a non-functional hub-2. Insteon provides a service: they will replace your non-functional hub-2 with a new hub-2, and with all information copied from your non-functional device to the new device. Get the solder to flow with your iron, then use an air compressor to de-solder. It completely removes all the solder so much so that the caps just fall out. The hole will be wide open to slide the new one in. Aim the air gun such that the solder sprays away from components or mask them first. No worries if solder spray gets where you don't want it, a stiff tooth brush knocks it all off. It doesn't bond, it just loosely sticks to the surface and easily knocks off.

This worked!! Thank you very much. I have not done soldering for atleast 10 years, and was able to remove and replace the capacitor. After removing the capacitor i realized that i did not note down the polarity of the capacitor when it was in the board, dont forget to do that. Other than that it was pretty easy. if you have a solder suction tool to remove old solder that would be helpful, thats probably what i had most trouble with. all in all took about 10 to 15 minutes. thank you!

Fantastic + a trick to try and revive before this fix Yes, my old 2016 hub worked for 4 years before it decided to stop. I freaked when I learned that there's no way to recover all the programming without Insteon's process of replacement (which takes 2 weeks!). I had even purchased a spare hub when they were on sale figuring that in the event something happened, I'd simply be able to plug in a new hub. NOPE! They have to program and issue a new hub -- can't replace with your own! In my discussion with Insteon -- the tech told me to press the re-set button 4 times and that in some cases, this revives the unit. It worked! It came back to life. HOWEVER -- a day later it died again and this time the reset procedure did not work. Luckily, I saw this video and had already purchased the capacitors per the included video link. In spite of Chris' soldering and repair abilities where he made it look as easy as slicing bread -- it was a real pain for me to get the old capacitor out. I was seriously concerned about burning the board in effort to get that capacitor out and once out, of course the holes were sealed with solder. No, I'm not real good at circuit board soldering. I had to use a heated pin (red hot) to poke back through the holes to open them up and insert the new capacitor. (ok, so i'm a rube g.) But, it worked and I was able to get that capacitor installed. And -- per the video -- it worked like a charm. THANK YOU CHRIS for sharing this video and providing links to the solution. Now -- we just have to figure out how to download the programming for our own safe keeping from the Insteon web.

Thank you for sharing! This solution revived my dead hub and only cost me a few dollars for the capacitor. I recommend skipping the solder sucker and actually add solder (a big blob) to the dead capacitor's leads on the back side of the board. Heating the blob of solder with the iron will melt the solder on both leads of the capacitor simultaneously making it easier to remove the cap. It's a bit tricky, but you can then insert the new cap with one hand while heating the blob of solder on the back side of the board with the other hand. (If you can develop the knack, then both leads of the new cap will smoothly slide in their respective holes simultaneously. The process is more reliable than removing solder from the holes in the board.) Finally, use the iron to scrape the blob away separating the leads of the capacitor (or use solder wick or the solder sucker to remove the excess blob).

I just bought a 2020 Crosstrek and it’s excellent. Love the traction, love the way the AWD transfers power around too. Just not quite enough wheel articulation in the rear. Also tip for next time: elect just one spotter, also it’s common sense that the driver needs to be going slow.

Anti-swaybar disconnects could maybe improve flex a bit. So could tires with a taller sidewall and lower pressures, like 235/75R15s on a 2018+, at 15-20psi. I'd also consider a rear diff-locker if you really want to maintain traction. A multi-mount winch in the hitch, traction boards, and skidplates can make a Crosstrek a bit more worry-free on trails. It will never be a Wrangler at rough offroading like rockgardens, but it might become pretty good for overlanding and non-technical offroading. It's definitely pretty efficient. My 2016 2.0L/CVT can average over 40MPG by setting the cruise near the speed limit.

Got new caps from amazon. Put them in "both" of my DEAD HUBS! Voila, $6bux vs. $70. Now I have a backup. Has anyone done a repair and have the replacement capacitor go bad? We all know that Insteon is banking on this design flaw. Most common reaction to having most of your automated shit malfunction is to run out to the depot or bestie buy and drop $70 to get back communication. That's why I have two. Glad that I didn't throw the first one away. Really relatively easy if you as comfortable with a pencil solder iron. Really glad that I came upon this vid. Thanks so much for sharing with the rest of the class.
