My school was just down the road from the guitar shop Dave worked in. This was in the early '70's. A couple of us used to go in during lunch time. He's a nice guy.

Although I've been around music for decades as a guitarist and band leader, as well as a hard-charging solo performer, somehow I missed Johnny A completely. I could recognise his signature guitar at a glance, but for whatever reason, I never sought him out to listen to and to get into his playing. I think someone told me he was weird or something and not worth listening to, and somehow I believed that. Why, I don't know. Then a matter of a few weeks ago I was catching up on Joe Bonamassa's news video and he was really praising Johnny A as an influence. The Cuppa Joe episode included a live video and I watched it. Then I watched it again to see if what I was seeing was real. There on the screen was a guy who definitely wasn't weird at all, but was a marvellous guitarist and a really super nice guy! Right then and there I made myself a promise to never listen to and believe anyone who tells me a guitarist is weird and not worth listening to. I'd rather find out the hard way that an artist wasn't my cup of tea, than let someone, even someone I respect, make that decision for me. And you know something? Usually, even if someone I'm checking out doesn't really float my boat, I'll usually find something worthwhile in their style, their approach to music and life in general, that'll work for me and enrich my life.

As I write this, it’s a cold winter’s day in late 2022. I’ve got the flu and feel like shit. I’ve been invited to a gig tomorrow night and was thinking at my age, do I really feel up to it? It then got me thinking about some of the countless bands from lots of different genres I’ve seen over the years. There’s a handful that I still remember for various reasons. Whatever did happen to National Gold? I know, click on KZread- you never know. I’ll always remember National Gold for the sheer passion and musicianship they constantly put out. I remember walking into the Ruskin Arms one Friday night in the late 70’s early 80’s. While waiting to be served at the bar, I could hear this great music coming from the stage area next door. After shouting at the old boy behind the bar to hurry up (could never remember his name) pint in hand, I went in and was blown away by ‘National Gold’ Great vocalists, guitar sounds and playing to die for! The whole band were fantastic. Best sound ever from a band at the Ruskin. (Yes, I did see Iron Maiden there as well-too bloody loud most of the time. The Ruskin was built around Victorian times, not designed for loud rock music and was a real challenge for any sound engineer/band to get a good sound) I can honestly state that I’ve lost count of the bands I’ve seen and heard over the years. Very few stick in my head as being ‘a cut above the rest’ National Gold definitely were an cut above the rest’. Rock on lads, wherever you are. Oh, and BTW, I will be going to that gig tomorrow night -rock N roll helps keep me alive and sane in this mad world.
