Cooperation is the attitude required to work well with others. Collaboration is the act of working well with others. Collaboration is dependent on cooperation. Successful collaboration is achieved only when differences are put aside and everyone works towards a common goal, overcoming all obstacles that come their way.

Netiquette is the acceptable form of communication on an online platform. This includes using appropriate language, refraining from putting someone or someone's ideas down, being active and working towards the goal of the online setting. Negative online behaviors include insulting someone, using inappropriate or vulgar language, failing to reply to someone, failure of responding to someone within a given time frame, etc. Illegal online behaviors include posing threats to others, cyber bullying, copying online material (plagarism), unauthorized recording of people and their activites, etc. Behaviors that are considered a nuisance include copying another individual's work as it leads to lack of personality and creativity. If one is cyber bullied than they should immediately seek help from someone in a higher authority. While you might not be able to take action yourself, someone above you and the bully can take action to prevent such actions from continuing. Copyright law exists to protect anyone's work from being copied. It seeks to give credit to the original creator/publisher before it is forwarded to other platforms through different users.

    1. Define online identity Online identity is how you are depicted as a person within an digital environment. It is controlled by your habits, speech, thoughts, and ideas. This is how people will view you as a person without having met you before. This is also what will influence others opinions on you even after having met you in person. It is analogous to a permanent personality label that is both in your control and outside of your control. 2. How is it created? Your online identity is created by how you display yourself online. This includes private, public, direct, and indirect means. Anything and everything that is attached to your name becomes a part of your identity and a component of your recognition within the online environment. 3. Do we all have online identities Yes, we all have online identities. Whether you have an online profile or you don’t, as long as you have been mentioned in an online environment, you have an online identity. 4. What are the risks related to our online identity? Our online identity dictates many aspects of our lives including our reputation, friends, likes and dislikes. Our online identity is a permanent component of our reputation. Even though we may change as people, what we choose to upload to the online world will always remain on record and traceable by others.

    1. What is the difference between public and private online information? Public and online private information are different mainly due to the accessibility of others to this information. Public information can be obtained by anyone, including friends, family, coworkers, class mates, and strangers. Private online information is secured and only accessible to those individuals that you have granted access to. 2. What are the risks of sharing personal information online? Once you share information online you lose the authority to control its possession. This is true for both public and private online sharing. Even when you share information privately, everyone who has access to it also has the ability to pass it onto others that you may not be well acquainted with. Secondly, you may forget about what you have shared online but it will always be traceable and existent within the online world. Humans, emotions, and phases of life are temporary but online environments are permanent. Thus, when you have moved on in life, the things you may have posted online in the past may come back to harm your reputation or goals. For example, some political leaders forget about racist comments that they may have made online in the past. They proceed in their careers having forgotten about them but that information is still open to the public and can ruin their potential career.

I think more time has to be spent on creating a more immersive experience that involves enhanced motion graphics and emphasis on better design. User experience has to be part and parcel of the online educational experience. Another thing to consider is the quality and experience of the narrator, as emphasis and intonation are important aspects when you consider an audience that is looking to absorb and retain information being presented to them.

This clip makes a great point of virtual communication bringing on efficiency in class room settings. I think that non-verbal communication has a negative effect on emotional cues that are more prevalent in f2f. The advent of video chat programs like Skype, google meeting etc bring a positive feel to non-f2f communication.

    1. Why do you think Jack presented these scenarios to Harry? Jack definitely wants to help Harry, however because Harry owns the business, he will ultimately know what is best for his company (I am assuming Harry knows more so than Jack about his own company). Thus, providing a list of options, rather than picking for Harry, is the better idea as it gives Harry time to juggle between each idea, and rationally choose one that best suits him instead. 2. What scenario do you think Harry should focus on? If harry wants to advertise his business, he will definitely need to use Social Media as it is the medium nearly every competitor uses. By choosing not to use social media, he is putting himself at a huge disadvantage. It says he is worried what people will say about his business, but if he can focus simply on delivering to the customers, he will not need to worry so much about it. I think the scenario Harry should use is the Same Place, Asynchronous since all he wants is to build an online presence. His workers can come into his office at their shift times, and answer any client inquiries and/or coordinate with him of any plumbing contracts. By doing this asynchronously, it ensures that clients who call (or email) will not be put on hold as there will always be a worker in the office/online. 3. Where should Harry start? What steps should he take? I believe Harry should start by choosing a location for all his workers to meet up. Once done, he should create social media pages -preferably Facebook, Instagram, and Skype Business-. Facebook and Instagram can show off pictures of the company, and even customer reviews, which builds on his goal of wanting interaction between customers. Skype business is to allow the workers to contact each other. As mentioned above, because workers work asynchronously, there won’t be a time where the office is empty of any customer contact representatives.

Netiquette is the appropriate way of behaving when communicating over the internet. For instance, being yourself, not using upper case letters all the time (shouting) and also respecting people and their privacy on the internet. Some negative online behaviors would be spamming, cyber bullying, posting offensive statements. Spamming is considered a nuisance, cyber bullying and copyright infringement is considered illegal. Copyright is the protection of the original author's work from someone else using their work and taking credit for it.

  • @ashrayvarma2422

In a face to face conversation people decoded the message and by that I mean what the person was saying, their body language and eye contact. Communication has evolved vastly in the past century. Before either used to communicate by telephone or write letters if the receiver of the message was long distance. Then the personal computer was invented as well as the internet and the use of E-Mail. This allowed a person to communicate with others but the time spent on the message to be received was reduced compared to writing a letter. Then social media sites were developed which allowed people to stay in touch with people overseas through chat, video conference with them and sharing pictures etc. The difference between face to face and virtual communication is that with virtual communication you and the person you're speaking to don't have to be in the same place. For instance, I use Skype to video call my Grandpa in India whereas I live in Canada, we can see each other and talk to each other as if we are in the same place.

Jack presented the four scenarios to Harry in an effort to make Harry understand the different models of online communication so that he could make an informed decision regarding how best to begin his company's online presence. By clearly defining the models, Harry can look at the different social media tools available to him and see where they fit in the model. He has to keep in mind his company resources and the message he would like to transmit to his customers.

People invented additional mechanisms for use in virtual communication in an effort to infuse emotion and tone into conversations. The creation of digital technologies originally removed these personal cues which are important communication tools. I like that "lol" was mentioned, as I often type "lol" to make sure the person I am communicating with understands that what I am saying is meant to be light and fun or as a way to let someone know I appreciate something they have said. Which, when you think of it, is interesting considering it's true that I have never actually laughed out loud while using lol to communicate online.

For Harry's plumbing business I think it would be best for them to use an asynchronous different place scenario. Based on what the business is and that you may possibly have different people working on complex plumbing jobs at different times of the day. Depending on the circumstance it can be a different location. For example lets say a customer wants to know information about the status of a plumbing project and the customer could be calling company headquarters a different location. I think it may take a lot of work to get the employees and Harry trained to use whatever technologies they use. Many people could potentially have access to this information so there needs to be high motivation and trust to ensure the system works properly. Documentation will be important. How much control everyone has of the technology will also be something that will need to be decided. Does Harry allow everyone to have equal access? Does he allow documents to be edited once notes are entered? He may not want notes to be edited, just corrections added with new information, so that the next user knows what the person was thinking at the time the information was entered. Overall an effective system using digital tools could allow a process where any plumber could look at an open project no matter how complex or difficult it is and know where the company is at with the project, what has been done, what needs to be done and what the current challenges are - Even if they had not previously been involved in the project.

The Shannon and Weaver Model describes communication and breaks it down into a simplistic process. Clearly technology has created additional channels of communication that many people have benefited from. I think the model is effective in describing communication in a straight forward way. Now how we can address the complexity of communication and technology so that people can benefit from additional technologies available and not be fearful of change.

This is a very important area of digital communication and I am glad we are covering it regarding face-to-face communication and digital communication. I think it is fair to say that both are important. It depends on the context on which medium of communication to use. Face to face communication can be more authentic, but may not always be practicable due to distance and what information is being relayed. Also face-to-face communication may unnecessarily use up more time then needed to communicate say simple tasks. However sometimes face-to-face communication is necessary and desired. Let's say it for communicating with a close family member that you have not seen in a long time. Different digital tools can compensate where face-to-face communication is not possible. Skype can be used to communicate when people need to resolve complex problems and written communication for example would be to slow.

Digital tools can have different purposes, some more broad then others. Vicky in the video demonstrated how they can be used for different purposes. i.e. Facetime to connect with family. I can connect with that as I use Facetime to connect with family in Arizona and California.

I am not sure why Pierre needs to explain why he has lunch by himself. As an instructor myself, I am around people more than 8 hours a day sometimes F2F or online. I need that time by myself to get energized plus it is good to be alone once in a while. I have never had to explain to my boss why I am eating alone. It is my time and I am free to choose if I want to spend it alone in my classroom or with other instructors.

I think if we can create the balance of business and personal to our social media accounts, it will make your business more humble. When we think of business we think of harsh, strong and robotic but once you mix it with personal details it becomes warm, loving and humanized. I am not sure everyone would feel this way especially if EVERYTHING we do becomes TOO public. I am not saying this is what I do, but when I do post something - I make sure that it is not something that would offend my clients in anyway. (not all my clients are friends, so they only see my Facebook Work Page.

Cyberbullying can happen to children and adults. Posted this to a reply on FB: www.huffingtonpost.com/patrice-bendig/the-heartache-of-bullying-doesnt-have-an-age-limit_b_6046668.html Now, what about cyber-harassment or cyberstalking? Can we include pushing an agenda as cyber-harassment? Making an honest comment and then be attacked for it because people didn't feel the same way. Is this a type of harassment? If it is… then yes I have.

I think Jack presented these scenarios to Harry so that he could visual understand what Jack was talking about. When we are faced with something new it is always nice to have it broken down in its simplest form. When we do not know how something works we need it to be explained to us like we are a child. It is not something we use on a daily basis so it can be overwhelming. Baby steps are important especially when it comes to technology.

Yes, I think that this model applies to digital technologies as well. Since we transmit messages via the internet. They also go through the same steps. 1. Send email 2. Encrypted 3. Email server 4. Unencrypted 5. Inbox
