Beginner's Garden - Journey with Jill

If you're interested in growing your own food, you're in the right place! I'm Jill and I garden in Arkansas, zone 7b. As a beginning gardener in 2013, I found it difficult to find the most basic information for beginning gardeners. Now with ten years of knowledge and experience from my 2500+ square foot garden (consisting of raised beds, ground beds, containers, and a greenhouse), I hope to help beginners find success in their own food gardens. Although I now grow most of the vegetables and herbs our family eats throughout the year, I am still learning, failing, and testing, and I share my ongoing garden journey here as well.

    Where your placing you bed dig a foot down then fill that hole with your twigs wood chip logs then put your ground soil on top. If you have grass I dug square slods piled them up jango style to air but covered in the dry spell the grass died and i then crumbed the squares grass free

    Looks like a great product but even though I don't expect ro save money by growing my own produce, that is just way to much to spend.

    Add Choppee to your Burmese list. These are my two favorite ones. They don’t grow too tall and the pods can go longer and stay tender more than other varieties. Choppee has no ribs so you can squeeze more into a jar if pickling.

    Thank you for this information. Have you tried Health Kick? It’s a nice compact plant that provides tons of firm, meaty, large Romas and has extra lycopene. Also I add crushed egg shells to each tomato plant when planting to thwart blossom end rot. That might help you too. Not enough calcium in the soil can cause it.

    You could make your own system for far less. I saw another system like this that had adjustable sprinkler heads so you could ensure even watering everywhere.

    You can cook the broccoli leaves as you do collard greens. It cooks quicker than collards and the flavor is sweet! Enjoy!

    I started my granex onions way too early. They sat in trays for months. Planted in the middle of February and just harvested my first onion today. Atlanta area. First time trying to grow onions. Lots of lessons learned. Will improve next year.

    I loved hearing how the GIM grids came about. I like the square ft gardening method. I think using thar method takes less time and can get seeds or transplants in faster. I just wish they would have more sales on the grids. I can only buy a year. Lol❤️🌺

    It's likely a pollination problem. Sometimes it's due to heat, sometimes to rainy weather.

    Personally like the self watering 5 gallon buckets that can be netted for broccoli, cabbage, Brussels etc. no bugs to ruin other plants! Looks great for greens, but not large climbing crops.

    I am now considered zone 7a in northwest Arkansas. I planted green magic broccoli this year in my raised bed. I am trying to decide when to harvest. Heads are about 4-5 inches wide but we are supposed to get up to high 80’s temperatures this week. Any advice?

  • @thebeginnersgarden
    @thebeginnersgarden4 күн бұрын

    I'd just keep an eye on the heads and harvest before they start to separate. I harvested mine a tad too late. They separate fast when the heat rises.
