Amy, could you please explain if the stomping is a particular “thing” the bears do, for a good reason please? Or was this just one-off funny behaviour?🙏🌸
@FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMSКүн бұрын
This is absolutely STANDARD, common behavior. Both males and females stomp-mark to leave a scent trail. The glands on their feet leave a great deal of information for the other bears to pick up. (I always try to anticipate Qs and put some info in the video description. ) Some bears have really hilarious stomping styles. This sweet sow really cracked me up. She was quite adamant: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oGGsj4-oaazcnbg.html

@@FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS Thank you for your reply. I feel embarrassed that I asked, given comments suggested the answer and I could have googled it! I live in Australia and don’t ‘get’ your bears. What happens if your dog’s in the yard when they walk past? Why do they seem to visit people’s homes and swimming pools without trouble? Are they scared of people? What about your bins outside - are they specially locked? Koalas and wallabies are so little trouble by comparison!! 😅

@FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS2 күн бұрын
🤣 Yeah around here, you have to set out the trash early-early on the morning of pick-up. Otherwise, that’s what happens. My house is a couple miles from trash pick-up already so I just wait until my shed (the glorified trash can) reaches critical mass, then I make a trip to the transfer station. Love that old mill. It’s so cool you live near there. Paul and his brother, Joe, and Al and I had a lovely meal there once, after having fun real-estate scouting together all afternoon. I remember being happily overcome by feral kittens after the meal. What a blast. Those were the days! I heard the new owners are working to bring that place back as an eatery? Hope that happens.

He definitely had several hook-ups - at least I saw the foreplay aspect of those hook-ups. 😁 He and Ernie, and Scruffy, and Camper, and Crosby, and Scarbee, and Splash, et al. - they’ve all been very busy this year. So have their sow counter-parts. I love to see them having fun during this courtship period. Before long they’ll be chowing-down 24/7 as they prepare to fatten up for winter. Time’s flying. 🫤

@FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS2 күн бұрын
Sure, I keep a look-out, although they definitely aren’t interested in me. They just want the sow-girls (this time of year) and at every other moment, they just want something to eat. Thankfully, there’s plenty of natural food sources all around here - berries, grubs, etc. I did have a close call with Frosty last week, though, when I was walking the dogs on one of my trails. Thank goodness the dogs never figured out Frosty was there. 😳 I posted that video to my FB FairviewCritterCams page. Here’s the link in case you’d like to watch it: facebook.com/share/v/prqUN3Ue1bEyTMbe/ I’m sure bears have been traveling along this same ridge-top for ages now - long before my home was ever built here. I know the previous owners had serious problems with one bear, but that’s probably because they left birdseed out on a screened-in porch? Just my guess, anyway. I just try not to get in their way, I never leave food out, or trash within reach of the bears. I just leave out water for all the wildlife, especially when it’s dry. And I try not to get too upset when they trash so much of my landscaping when they do their traditional rounds. They were here first, after all.
