Well implemented game on a top of great machine
Beverley Hills Cop is such a weird game! Still, it’s probably my favourite on this list. Did you know that the next level is a driving game? Then an overhead run ‘n’ gun? I’d like to give Gremlins a go, that looks cool. Thanks again for the cool video!
Yeah, it's a strange collection. I think there is a very good 3D shooter in there too...if I recall correctly.
What a fab series! So much work must have gone into this. Bravo!
I like your tier list idea though top. It's more succinct. I'm going to try it with all the Double Dragon games across all Atari machines.
I never noticed that the missiles from the center launcher fly faster than the missiles from the left/right launchers.
Another interesting, yet brutally difficult St title.
The only ATARI makes it possible !
I had this game for my Commodore 64 as a tape version. It was harder and more frustrating 😹🕹️ than Taito's ELEVATOR ACTION 😺👍🕹️.
The only ATARI makes it possible !
Amazing graphics (take into account the hardware)
I'm really enjoying the Overscan format. Fantastic stuff! Just a note that NeoSprint was released to early access on the modern Atari VCS last October. The developers really listened to feedback, and the current build is much improved from the original release. They even implemented Classic Controller support on the VCS so that you can use the spinner function for steering. Food Fight: Culinary Combat is currently in early access. It's an interesting way for Atari to support the platform while leveraging the small but mighty userbase for testing and feedback. P.S. Atari should definitely own the Golden Era of Retro. Match the excellent vector monitor emulation of VCTR-SCTR with a Vectrex retrospective and you have a winner.
Short answer: No. The fact that these games aren't expiring in copyright and going to the public domain will have catastrophic effects on the development of long term culture. This is all about Atari maximising that has been their long term business plan since the early 2000s: licensing; in this case, by expanding their copyright portfolio. The fact that most people don't see a problem with this, is a testament to just how beaten down we've become with regards to copyright and patent law abuse.
Interesting take! So what is the expiration date, of say "Pong" when it comes to copyright? Isn't it something like author's death+ 50 years"? If that is true, we still have a long long way to go.
@@IntoTheVerticalBlank Yes. Thanks to former Senator Sonny Bono allying with Disney, Copyright expiration has become 70yrs + lifetime of author. Every time some legislation has come to the floor to limit this mess, it gets buried. (edit: and 70+lifetime applies to those works of sole authorship. Works of corporate authorship can be as much as 120 years.) I spent an awful lot of my 20s speaking out on the Sonny Bono Copyright Extension Act, and copyright/patent law abuses. Often to crowds of people who thought I was nuts. "Why does it matter?" etc... (I guess it's yet another reason my posts on social media never seem to go above 100 impressions...) :P
So the "public domain" status is many of these games is far beyond our lives. What is the end game of what you suggest? Would have liked to see the Intellivision assets being put into the public domain now? How would that come about? Are there other game rights-holders who have put their content in the pubic domain?
@@IntoTheVerticalBlank This is something that is very hard to overcome, given the current state of copyright and patent legislation being so incredibly deregulated. The closest thing I could think of, to be able to counteract this madness, would be forming a co-op for owning game content.
Would be interesting if Atari focused on classic game catalogues that are in limbo or forgotten completely. Honestly though I would love to see Atari get the Carmen Sandiego license and re-release all the classic PC games as that has been rather stale for a while and honestly they were the perfect educational game as it got you invested in solving the case without realizing that you were learning something.
3 times a charm. My favorite on KZread. Great work guys. Yes, Atari should own all retro and they need to remake the oldest games, give them the recharge treatment ❤
I ordered both of Clifford Stoll’s books after hearing about them on the last Over Scan. They were both under $5 each, used on eBay. Really look forward to the variety of these episodes.
Great podcast and topic guys. I’m a bit behind on the content, but wanted to pass along my appreciation. Good stuff as always! As far as boredom, I long for the boring summer days of the late 70s-mid 80s, before I could drive and was kinda stuck at home. Those are very special memories for me. Unique to my boredom experience is that I was a farm kid in the Midwest out in the middle of nowhere, so I didnt have the neighborhood group life as you did. My days were filled with farm stuff, riding 3 wheelers, BB guns and building forts in the trees. Atari definitely changed things tho when I got mine in 1982.
So I made sure the issue with hitting tab with commands to prevent the zoneheight error but now it’s saying 32K is an unsupported ROM size.
Make sure the "k" is lowercase: set romsize 32k
There are many differents level ! Enjoy
Atari ST Commando should have a choice of music or sound FX or both
Predator 2 game Sega Genesis/Mega-Drive does better at capturing the feel of the film or movie
a crappy, dreadful, garbage, horrible, rubbish, terrible port (version) by Software Creations
Agree.
Good stuff😀
Very impressive! The audio is quite good. It’s like old school radio. After missing out on the previous several batches, I finally managed to snag a Movie Cart earlier this week. Hopefully it’ll arrive soon.
Wow, I played Aztec on Apple II and had a lot of fun (I was a kid and had to learn by doing but I enjoyed myself ) never knew about an Atari port.
2x ATARI 2600 = STEreo !
Wow! That's really cool!
From Peter's page for this currently: "There is even special launcher for STEs with fixed mixer - see in forum for more details." Did your version have that launcher and did you use it for this?
This was recorded straight off my STE a few years back. In fact, MY ISP wont even let me get to Pete's site any more. I need to check out that version!
That's Freaking w!ZaRd!! Alright, Now I wanna Convert U.H.F. (the movie) to Atari 2600
This is blowing my mind
The audio especially is quite a bit better than I expected.
Kinda want to see how the Alan Alda Atari computer Commercials would look like running through this. :)
100%
My brother did this update in 2012
Yaaay! Great job! One thing I noticed with my LCD TV. turning it off/on mid playback causes both fields to be shown interleaved nicely. You can really tell the difference when you up/down on the joystick to see the timecode/volume etc.
Hey, now that I think about, there will be support for this video in Stella, right? Does that mean maybe DASM or bAtari support as well? And then soon after, FMV games for the 2600? Is Dragon's Lair 2600 just around the corner?
@@IntoTheVerticalBlank Yah, the changes are already in Stella, but they just need to compile a new installer when they get a chance. There's been lots of interest in FMV style games which is techinically possible with some firmware upgrades. Maybe next project!
Thanks for the shout out to MovieCart! I've actually been putting up 50..100 each week for the last 3 weeks, not 2 or 3, but they've been selling instantly. I'm currently sold out again but am preparing more soon!
It's awesome!! Sorry about the low estimate. Good going! Just put up a video of our theme song/video converted to Movie Cart! kzread.info/dash/bejne/c6d3rNiRj6vTlJM.html
That st ingame tune seems to have borrowed a riff from outrun or is it just me hearing that.
Definitely borrowed by the same musician from another of his game scores
I've actually got an interview with the guy who designed and programmed this game at Imagitec Design, Julian Alden Salter, in my new Sega Mega Drive/Genesis book.
I can't wait to read it!
well known game..
was New Zealand Story a well known game in the arcade as well as on a computer Amiga, Amstrad, Atari ST, C64, FM Towns, Sharp X68000, ZX Spectrum, and/or a console Nintendo DS, NES, Master System, Genesis/Mega-Drive, PC Engine, PS2, PSP, Xbox = Taito Legends, Turbo-Grafx?
if New Zealand Story wasn’t a well known arcade game then it possibly wasn’t well known on the computers + consoles
It was well known in England for sure
Congrats on 2 shows. Hopefully you won’t lose any more subscribers, but on the bright side we could always celebrate 1,000 subs again if it gets to that. All joking aside I love the deep dive (I mean overscan) and the quality and variety.
Yes, 1000 sub celebration coming soon!
Thanks for putting this out, was a great watch/listen during my workout session.
I didn't know this game, but that's not the difference I'd have expected by the two versions! Usually there should be at least an option to pick either music or sound effects. I wonder what made the developers go this route. It kind of reminds me of Torvak the Warrior, the ST version of which got simultaneous music and sound effects while the Amiga had sound effects only.
Interesting isn't it? The game play is identical. They could have easily put mod the MOD tune in the ST version abd the samples add added some nice parallax and multi-channel sound to the Amiga and STE. It's odd in 1992 to not try to add small things to compete with the consoles, especially on the Amiga. The game is fun though.
@@IntoTheVerticalBlank I hear the ARG / Amigos guys complaining all the time about no simultaneous music & sfx. I'm not sure about programming on the Amiga - was it possible to play a 3 channel mod & reserve the remaining channel for sfx? Perhaps the forced stereo separation made it weird. Easier on mono st maybe?
I still wish they’d bring out a VR console -- not a high-end device with photorealistic graphics, not a pure nostalgia toy with safe elevator muzak remixes of Asteroids and Breakout, but a trance-inducing Llamasoft delivery platform. Would they be able to pull it off, and would it sell? Probably not!
Needs to be 60-120 fps of pure retro goodness, and yes, a huge dose of Llamasoft.
@@IntoTheVerticalBlank I think I like the idea so much because it would be a thing with a real identity and not easily replaced with a generic laptop or whatever other computer or console you have lying around that could run Polybius and Tempest 4000. Although I guess you could add VR goggles to those. But it wouldn't have fake woodgrain, big klonky metal switches, and be all in one!
I agree that they key is to not create "a box" or a "box with a screen" that is more expensive than, and easily replaceable by better and cheaper consoles, phones, etc. I would like see support for physical media as well.
I want excessive use of retro Atari games as metaphors. Speaking in Canyon Climber, there was a retro videogame special where Canyon Climber was the final challenge. I am curious what it is.
There are few of those stories brewing, but they take time. There is an HD remaster of "Lost Dutchman" almost done though.
@IntoTheVerticalBlank a reason why I want to track down what show had Canyon Climber in it, is it started off with a video of a digging videogame where one dug diagonally. I thought it might be Robby Roto but I believe I am wrong.
Well written, great presentation. Many games I have never played, even the big names. Looks very interesting. Fire Force for example. Really enjoyed watching this episode. Well done Jeff ❤
Thanks, AL! I hope you are doing well.
By the way, I’ve always thought that 2 games from this video had curiously the same defect: the gun is too hughe compared to the character’s sprite (Baal and Zone Warrior) 😂
Dudes love BIG Guns, Jo! =)
Great video! I was expected that! The music in Zone Warrior is almost the same than Thunder Wing. I can’t believe than the big Barry Leitch copied that tune from 1989… (I mean, this guy composed Super Cars II chiptune, for god sake)
The ST version was probably an after thought, so they just either stole Barry's tune or asked him for one he has lying around. Decent playability though, I do like it, but it could have been a classic.
Baal sucks imho … Sly Spy has potential… enjoyed that. Btw I loved Zone Warrioe lol Great video compilation ❤
Zone Warrior is good, but it's an example of a crap port from the Amiga to the ST =)
@@IntoTheVerticalBlank I never saw that tbh as I thought it was ace. Unlike something like Wolfchild which I thought was a pathetic rushed conversion… like a lot back in the 90s sadly
I thought Zone Warrior looked good, but I think Jeff was very very deep into this process and is seeing details I'm not seeing.
Really need to find a colour monitor for my ST (Have an Stf that I just recently got but it came with a monochrome monitor).
There are a lot of older monitors that will work with the ST2VGA ADAPTER as long as the monitor can do the CGA signal standstill of 15Khz
@@IntoTheVerticalBlank I have read about these cables, tried to make one but luck is not on my side as the 13 pin din connectors I got have just melted from the soldering (I did keep my iron at a low temperature that could still work but the dins must have been made really cheap).
Games like Panther make me believe that a C64 version of Desert Strike could well be possible one day...
YES! There actually was one game that was like it, I need to find the name, but THE C64 is 100% capable of a decent 8bit port
I hope you guys can make this a weekly podcast, that would be sweet! You guys also represent us ST and 7800 fans in the margins, erm, overscan of the retro computing world. Keep it up, guys!
Thanks Gabriel! We are trying!
What a BOX. That was a fun afternoon!
What an amazing haul! The condition of everything is amazing. I love buying from original owners and learning about the owner's history with these machines. I love MicroLeague BB -- played that a ton on my A8. I need to add Summer Games to my collection. Those Avalon Hill big boxes are cool. I love collecting the older big box SSI wargames. I remember perusing the SSI catalog and dreaming about playing them. Pooyan! Another game I'm looking to add. Congrats!
I still have the tapes for a couple of those avalon hill games. Both are space strategy style games. Conquest is 1 but forgot the name of the other. I should dig them out this weekend & give them another go again.
The power supply for that computer shouldn't be a problem as it's 9V AC (same for the 800 & 1200XL) so it won't have the same regulators that fail like the XL & XE power supplies do.
Good news! Thanks!
@@IntoTheVerticalBlank forgot to mention earlier but current draw also matters. I saw a site recently that listed which power supplies for various atari systems drew how much current. Forgot the url but a search engine can find it.
