I'm old enough (sadly) to remember the 00s, very much my era. Some absolute quality players and great matches but I'm not so sure it was any better/worse than football today. Maybe a bit of nostalgia effect happening here. That's just my opinion though and 00s was still a great era so I totally get why some people consider it one of the best decades. Euro 2000 was one of the best tournaments though but, unfortunately, it's clouded for me because I can only think of England blowing a 2-0 lead against Portugal to end up losing and then losing to Romania in the final group game to get knocked out. At least we beat Germany though! International football is a bit more expressive and less reliant on minutiae of tactics simply because a manager has the best players from a nation to pick from. If it's a top nation you could have several world class players and even the other players in the squad will be at a very good level. Tactical discipline is probably more important for a "lesser" nation as they need to find a way to beat top nations stuffed with quality players. I'd also argue that Serie A was more dominant in the 1990s than the 00s. If anything, La Liga was probably the best league, followed by Serie A and then the EPL got stronger towards the end of the decade.

90 to mid-2000 was the peak of sports all around. Social media, analytics, and corporatization killed everything magical about it. Turned entertainment into bean counting. Kids today are watching money, not sports. If they watch.

This is such a sad story. But thanks for sharing, it touched me. I got into football in 2013 and it was just magical. As a 19-year old, I was in love. Nowadays I can't even bear to watch the sport anymore.

I blame Johan Cruyff and ultimately Pep Guardiola who managed to implement his vision of "Totaalvoetbal" in the late 2000s with the legendary Barca side of that time. This changed football to "system football" as we know it today. Overengineered and boring, but unfortunately very effective.

Real Madrid today play like that. players are given freedom, they can play left, right, center and switch back again. they shoot from far away, cross or one of their players makes a run forward and scores. Very dynamic way of playing. They play with passion and leave it all on the pitch. So i disagree when in the video you say “no one is really playing like this anymore”. I encourage you to watch Real Madrid play.

The most important thing on a football players mind these days is what their celebration is going to be. And as far as tactics, every single team plays the exact same way. Possession football. It was so evident at the euros and made the majority of the games very boring.
