    Thanks for the demo! I use thinner paint films than you do, overall, so usually the water miscible oils are touch dry within 24 hours, depending on the colour. Titanium takes longer, umbers and others may be dry within a few hours. No faster than regular oils in my experience either. Don't forget that no matter what you thin with, including thinner, if you use too much, you're risking having an unstable paint film because the binder will break down.

    Forget about water mixable oil paint. Use mineral oil to clean your brushes and chose nontoxic pigments in your oil colors. Never use soap and water it will ruin your brushes.

    These videos are great Ana, thank you for taking the time to make them, and once more a beautiful painting as a visual to the wonderful articulation. I really do appreciate these, I'm just about to begin my journey into painting. My easel and water mixable oils arrived this morning. So, I've no excuse for any further procrastination. :) But, geez, I'm so nervous to begin. I am creative and have been a UX designer/software engineer for most of my career. I do lots of illustration in AI and Procreate and have a good transferable set of skills. But, oil paint, canvas, I'm a bit stuck to start. Scared tbh. I get this in the digital realm sometimes but, I have ctrl-z and or two finger undo. I suppose, painting will shine a light on my actual skills, and I'm hesitant to see myself without control. I doubt, I am alone in this? It'd be ace to have a video dealing with the fear of the blank canvas, how you overcome it, or any tips to getting going and dealing with procrastination. Cheers :)

    Thank you for sharing! I am excited for you - it sounds like the beginning of something great :) Don't worry about oil paint; it will come around with time. Start with simpler projects, maybe with just two colours (white and another colour, which doesn't even have to be black if you don't feel like it), so you can take your time to get accustomed to how paint mixing works. And guess what - you can also do the ctrl-z trick with oil paint! It's not like watercolour, which is a lot less forgiving to mistakes. If you manage your paint consistency well, you can always just cover up the mistakes with thicker paint. Or scrub it off! I do it all the time :) Either way, you're definitely not alone in this. I'll definitely make a video on fighting the fear of the blank canvas in the future, but for now here are a couple of things you can try: - Cover the canvas with a flat tone using either thinned out oil paint or acrylic paint to create a mid tone. Getting rid of the white can help. - Create a rough outline of what you want to paint with thinned out paint and let it dry. Then come back to it and paint on top of it. This will create a foundation that you can build on top of, and because you'll take a break between the two sessions, you'll be able to see the mistakes in the underpainting clearer. I would also suggest starting with a copy. Copy a photo or do a master copy. If you try to work on original stuff from day 1, it'll only create additional pressure, while copying will just help you focus on seeing how you can translate what you see and what techniques you can use to get there. Hope it helps 💛 Best of luck! You can do it!

    @@anabellstudio Thank you Ana, that's some really insightful and actionable advice. I appreciate you taking the time to pen such a detailed reply, it's nudged me towards the edge and I'm actually ready to leap. I'm going to take your advice of just laying down colour, I think that's it, I can envision being okay, after simply making the canvas a different shade. A statement of intent! :) I'm going to go monochrome, I have a beautiful image of the Bridge in Lisbon, lot's of tonal paradox and there's a nice skatepark beneath it that I want to use to make a statement about "value" and how we perceive it. I've been wanting to do it for ages, but cannot begin. Done loads of sketches, studies and digital stuff around it. Now, I go to the woods and will live deliberately. Thanks again Ana, humbled and grateful. :)🤟

    Thank you. I’m so glad you have made another video. Very informative as usual. I would love a video on glazing. A couple of questions: did you use water mixable oil paint? was this done in one session or was there drying time? How long did this painting take? I take weeks to complete a painting. I’m very laboured and slow and it is a delight to watch an actual artist paint, who clearly and professionally explains their process. Thank you again and apologies for all the questions. Cheers😊

  • @anabellstudio
    @anabellstudio3 ай бұрын

    That's a great suggestion, actually! I've been thinking about making a video (or a series of videos) on glazing. There are very few educational resources on it out there, and I've been putting together the pieces of the puzzle and adapting it to my water mixable oil painting technique in the last few months, so it would be fun to explore this topic. As for your questions, yes, this was made using water-mixable oils. This painting took me two days (which is why the light changes so much in the video 😅), so it can be considered two sessions because the paint was drying very fast - I used the chalk+fast-drying medium formula for the white paint. I think it's awesome that you take your time working on a piece! It's something I'm trying to work on myself - I'm very impatient, so I tend to rush the process. I'm working on slowing down now because sometimes you need to give the painting the time and care it deserves. Faster doesn't mean better. I'd recommend checking out Ruth Speer's channel (especially if you're into glazing). She's really inspiring in how much time and effort she puts in a signle piece, and both the results and the process are completely worth it.

    Why is that arrogant? It's not an expectation, but I think it is something an artist should strive for. I mean, where would the history of art be now if we didn't have artists who were "arrogant" enough to try and create something which would last?

    I just moved from traditional oils to water mixable, due to smell of Liquin. I use mostly Cobra Artists. I also have Georgian and Holbein Duo Aqua. While I liked Georgian traditional oils, water mixable aren't that good. Duo Aqua a little expensive, lovely colours but consistency is not my cup of tea. Also smell is different. About Artisan, I had the same experience with them. Nice video. I also use Sennelier cleaner and can recommend Bristle Magic: amazing to clean brushes.

    Hey, I'm a 3rd year painting student in uni, my 2-year college had a small art program so our painting studio didnt have enough ventilation, so we used water-soluble oils. I transferred to a 4-year uni and now i have to learn how to paint with 'real' oils. I have done a few test paintings, and the feel is very different from the water-solubles. My main frustration is that I am having trouble transitioning from basically only using gamsol for most of the painting, and then maybe a touch of cobras glazing liquid, to not really having a similar experience when doing the same thing with my traditional oils. do you have any tips for a smoother transition when moving from water-soluble to traditional oils? My prof doesnt know much about water-soluble paint so it is like we are both speaking different languages :( I have been using gamsol for my lean and walnut for my fat, we have to work fairly large, 36x48inches for most of the semester, so i dont want to waste expensive oils.
