I have installed Loxone automation which can automate shading to help with thermal gain up and down. The installed said that this worked best with external shading like external blinds rather than internal as the blinds can't make such a difference when the solar energy has come through the glass. It would be good to have your view on how automated "internal" shading can help. Our home build has most of it's glass North facing so less gains to be made or lost but the combination of automated shading and MVHR would be really interesting to see.

Great question. The first thing to consider is that 'external shading vs internal shading' is not a black-and-white comparison. Think of it like SPF levels on bottles of sunscreen: blinds have different characteristics depending on the blind type, fabric type, fabric transparency and fabric backing etc. A roller blind with a 5% screen fabric is a bit like SPF 30; it lets a decent amount of light and visibility through, whilst offering good protection from the sun. A blackout blind, of course, is more like SPF 50; blocking out light and therefore heat far more than a screen fabric roller blind. Staying with the sunscreen analogy, external shading is like wearing a hat: it's either on or off and it does a great job of stopping the heat. Fixed external shading is not a good solution to a dynamic problem (the sun!) but moveable external shading is a much better solution however both options are comparatively a lot more expensive than internal blinds. That said, they are more effective at stopping the heat/light even entering the building in the first place, so in that respect they are 'better'. Internal blinds, on the other hand, offer UV protection, heat reduction, glare control and internal acoustic dampening. Internal shading can reduce heat loss by up to 33% energy in the winter, whereas external shading is completely ineffective at retaining heat. They aesthetically harmonise with the interior design theme and they can be automated to work with other smart home devices like lighting and AV systems Ultimately, neither is 'better' than the other. In an ideal world, people would specify both external and internal shutters and have both systems working harmoniously. External shading is 'better' at keeping the heat and light out for a few hot and sunny days of the year, but that's all it can do. Smart blinds are a better all-round solution for every day of the year. Hope this helps. If you need anything from us, please email [email protected] and one of our discovery team members will be happy to assist.

Great video, just in time for me, I am about to buy 13 blinds for my build which will use Tahoma to link to my Loxone system but the fact this has Zigbee means it has the potential to be much more open in the future. You have shown me limitations of RTS I was not aware of.

Awefull product, Somfy instructions and apps are hopeless, whoever developed this lot isnt in the real world, tried to set this up with Alexa and have just ended up messing the whole remote up after spending hours on it, free Tahoma switch now in the trash to preserve my sanity, never had any piece of tech so difficult to use as this, how a company can sell such poorly developed garbage as this is beyond me.

  • @umbrashading

Hi, yes you can programme the remote directly to the motor without the app, but this would be pretty pointless as you won't benefit from any of the Zigbee functionality you're paying extra money for. Setting the limits is slightly harder/more complex than RTS but when setting up through the app the extra functions you can configure are a nice touch. We now have these motors in stock.
