This was, by some margin, Wayne Larkins' best test match as a batsman for England. I saw him bat a lot during his county cricket career with Northants and Durham. He was a tremendous talent when on song. His was a career unfulfilled in my opinion.

Lamb was a disappointment in this series. He got to 91 at Perth and got himself out when we needed a century, and got out here when he was set. Don't get me started on Gower's deficiencies!

David Gower is, by far, the most elegant, graceful and cultured English batsman it has been my privilege to watch. An effortless timer of a cricket ball. England discarded him too soon. There was not so much talent in the ranks that they could afford to do that.

Terry Alderman was a wonderful bowler. At no more than medium fast pace, bowling wicket to wicket, he exposed the flawed techniques of England's batsmen here. Their performances were woeful.

This is the ugliest cricket ground I’ve ever seen. That boundary at long off is short compared to the stands which seem to be at a different cricket oval entirely.

DeFreitas, Fraser, Malcolm, Tufnell. Got to be one of England's weakest ever tails.

I've seen worse from England! Fraser was a half-decent blocker. DeFreitas had talent, but wasted it. The other two were utterly hopeless.

@@graememason7670 Yes, to be fair I do remember DeFreitas going on the attack a couple of times (possibly even on this tour in Australia(?)) and displaying pretty good timing and a potential to be fairly decent with the bat, but by more recent standards I don't see him being consistent enough to be selected to bat in the side at no. 8. Albeit I think from the Duncan Fletcher era onwards there's been far too much emphasis placed on whether bowlers can bat as well.

England would only play well once the Ashes had already been lost for most of the series in the 90’s. So frustrating. Especially in the 1997 series because we’d won the first test quite convincingly, drew the 2nd test and then still ended up losing 3-2. That was our best chance of winning the Ashes during those 18 long years!!

Remember watching this series as a 10 year old. So good to see the channel 9 coverage as i only saw it on the ABC as they still had the tv rights to test cricket in regional areas
