Please share around...... To those who will stand with me and speak up about this….. Dear, NBC Saturday Night Live It’s a shame that I need to do this and join many others in this very awkward, upsetting and embarrassing time after what me and the rest of the FASD community just saw on 1/15/22. To start, Im a Individual with FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) /ARND which means (Alcohol-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder) a term followed under the umbrella of other Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. I was Diagnosed in my mid-teens…for the longest time before that, they just thought it was just a basic learning disability. I can go on and on leading up to the day I was officially diagnosed and where I was during this time. But right now, I will just break it down to the best of my ability and get to the basics of how your skit further impacted the stigma of us with FASD, and Parents and Caregivers you decided to show to your audience of MILLIONS of people. When I woke up in the morning of 1/16/22 and saw a post from my community of your “Winter Formal” Skit that you confidently took part in. I was nervous….I thought… “what now?’’. I just started Advocating for myself and the FASD community literally just a few months ago. After all this time living with FASD being constantly discriminated, ridiculed, being told I'm a red flag, rocks thrown at me..the list goes on, I wanted to be apart of change since its insanely difficult to feel accepted in this world with FASD and getting the right support. So, I watched…..I cried… and then the kicker of the ending quote “You know why he is like this? Because I drank Alcohol when I was pregnant’’ (Putting a thumb up while saying it). I was stunned, I’m still currently feeling 5 different kinds of emotions right now. I'm trying to understand how the writers even the actors managed to rehearse this Skit and all that without being aware that you are portraying parents making fun of their child with FASD, A disability….Donovan looks like he’s on a legitimate front and centre display, like a big spot light shining down on him up for sale while they are pointing and laughing/ camera is zooming in and making complete mockery and horrible comments. I cant get started on the Sex statements. I just cant. In real life, there is parents out there that feel guilty that they drank when they did not know they were pregnant…the struggles of Addiction, and many out there are still unaware that Alcohol during pregnancy can affect their child. For over 50+ years, Advocates around the world been trying to take matter in their own hands educating about FASD. It’s the most underfunded disability, most unheard of, most unsupported. 90% of the people I met in my life have never heard of it or don’t know much about it and only hearing misinformation, my Schools growing up had no idea what it is and how to use the tools to better support us. The stigma of FASD has always been the most difficult battle for change for us. So here we are, with this Fresh new skit presented to your followers on national television having reactions to it like: “This is why I love SNL” “This Skit was Phenomenal” “The funniest Sketch of the night” etc. We recognize when people are not aware and uneducated..they don’t understand. But keep in mind there is still many that simply just don’t care and still love to bully, I see it all the time. Many like me feel Embarrassed, shamed and horrified of what we saw, and you gave us horrible memories and reminders of how we already feel when we struggle in this world. I encourage all of you that are involved, please Learn about FASD and educate better. And you owe all of us an Apology. We live in a world already enough full of hate. We all deserve respect, love and compassion and most needed than ever, Awareness and support! Please Respond to us, Do better !
