    Actually since the interview I tried to update the app so that Google allows it to be published again (must target at least one Android version number below the current version), but the changes due to the fact I use running services in the background being are heavily restricted now, it's too much work. If the Nissan API changes again (does that from time to time), do contact me for a link to the APK that you can (hopefully) install (and/or we will update the link here). I will keep the app up to date concerning the Nissan API as long as possible.

    Has anyone found that setting a charge limit to 80% (or lower) in the LEAF 40kWh actually slows down battery SOH degradation in Leaf Spy Pro (or equivalent apps)? Just curious to find out if there's evidence that charging to 80% or less has any real impact on battery health. Thanks :)

    @@decimal1815 oh very much. Every qualified battery chemist and materials scientist says so. There's always Barry in-the-pub who claims he's been charging to 101% for the last thirty years and has a SoH of 102%, but you can ignore Barry.

    Keeping the car, as Paul states, in the range of 20..80% SoC is the best suggestion you can give for the chemistry of the Leaf batteries. If you change to 100%, don't let the car sit with that for an extended period (days or weeks). For an optimum, charge it the previous day as it will not stay at 100% for long, but the battery can cool off during the night until you start driving (important when you start a long distance drive)

  • @christiankaiser6562
    @christiankaiser65625 күн бұрын

    As a side note, this is battery chemistry dependent (just want to stress it for other readers here). The LFP cells of my Tesla Model 3 should be charged every week or so to 100% (to allow the BMS to improve the estimation of the SoC as the cell voltage does not indicate the SoC state good enough, the V/SoC curve is too horizontal) and when I enter a destination in Teslas planning system, it happens that the car tells me I will arrive at planned 3% at a charger (what I definitely will not do - although the forecast of the Tesla is often really precise - for security, and DC charging at 3%... well.. gives me goose bumps)

    @@NissanEVOwnersUK yes I know about the electro chemistry good practice with these batteries but just wondered if anyone had evidence from practical experience that the charge limiting has a measurable impact on degradation in the LEAF 40. Battery balancing is also important in this case, presumably, as with the LEAF 24.

  • @NissanEVOwnersUK

    @@decimal1815 we've got the science answer, that should be good enough. There haven't been long term comparative studies examining 80% charged cars Vs 100% charged cars, but don't let the absence of such studies disprove or weaken the advice. Reference balancing; there's a lot of misinformation here. A Nissan battery ( and likely most others) is balancing most of the time. The only times balancing is stopped is when the pack is in a very high or very low state of charge. If you're avoiding those, you don't need to worry about balancing - it's happening without your needing to do anything.

    Interesting! Did you try it in multiple makes of CCS chargers? What are the wires hanging from the adaptor for? I appreciate you guys were fighting the elements but a step by step walk through of the complete charging process would have been appreciated so any difficulties in connection between vehicle and charger could have been observed and taken in to consideration if people are interested in purchasing an adaptor. There is a guy in Florida who purchased an adaptor and who posts on KZread (warts and all) his attempts and the difficulties he is having trying to get his adaptor working. Results are disappointing for the guy so far. Where within the UK are they being sold?

    We need carbon fibre brakes and Lithium Ion 12v batteries. With those, an EV would probably need no servicing other than an occasional coolant and oil change that kwik fit could do.

    One manufacturer, might have been Lada experimented with an oil system that could be changed at home. The filter had a port on the outside that fitted to a domestic drill pumped all the oil out of another port, presumably to go into the sewer. The new oil came in a large can and replacement filter and the oil was piped into the engine in the same way the old was extracted. Can't imagine why it didn't catch on.

    I LOVE MY 2012 LEAF. I agree that the decision to use the 24kWh battery was correct due to price. A bigger battery would have meant a higher cost, which would have put me off. When I purchased I took into account that it would be a city car. Living in Perth, Australia, distances between cities are far greater than in Europe / U.K.. I consciously decided that if I wanted to travel outside the city at that time, I would hire a fossil fuel burner. Today I could hire a modern E.V. With the required range. Perth (Oz) may not be Phoenix, but can still be hot, and it was not good for those early LEAFs. Given the Phoenix experience, I question why Nissan did not learn the lesson and incorporate thermal management in subsequent models. I congratulate Nissan on being a trail blazer in the E.V. field and producing a sturdy, quality vehicle. Apart from the HV battery, in eleven years, I have not had to replace any part, other than the consumable cabin air filter - brilliant.

    hi Paul in one of these vids with Euan I'm sure he mentioned a Scottish company doing something in connection with aftermarket leaf batteries .. something akin to what EVs enhanced have promised to do in NZ? do we know anything more?

    amtepower.com/ Nothing to report from them, I'm afraid. I nearly said during the interview something akin to 'Perhaps the best thing that could conceivably happen to Amte Power is that they get snapped up by a conglomerate', but Euan seemed emotionally invested so saying that might have come across as trite and would have likely been cut in the edit. I'll ask him on Xwitter if there's any news.

    A good interesting video..Before the P.M statement, I was watching a debate in the house of Lord's and it was mentioned that there should be a less confusing situation of the way you pay for charging an E.V. The Kiwi company is EVs Enhanced. They are working on a “16 Blade” LEAF battery with thermal management. But first orders will go to Nu Zeeelund residents. I thoroughly recommend EVs Enhanced as a result of their assistance when I upgraded my 24kWh LEAF to 40kWh in Perth ( Southern Hemisphere, guys ). They modified the electronics in my BMS to suit and provided a great conversion kit. I was greatly relieved that this talk did not get as deeply technical as the intro suggested 😉
