“What is our life but a series of preludes to that unknown song whose first solemn note is tolled by death? The enchanted dawn of every life is love. But where is the destiny on whose first delicious joys some storm does not break?… And what soul thus cruelly bruised, when the tempest rolls away, seeks not to rest its memories in the pleasant calm of pastoral life? Yet man does not long permit himself to taste the kindly quiet that first attracted him to nature’s lap. For when the trumpet sounds he hastens to danger’s post, that in the struggle he may once more regain full knowledge of himself and his strength.”

Interesting version. I'm not quite sure whether I like it or not in comparison to others, but it highlights certain nuances of the symphony that are not appreciated in most versions. Anyway, no matter who conducts, this symphony is absolutely incredible, as the rest of Prokofiev's symphonic work. About the second movement in particular... words fall short for me to express what it transmits. Just listen to 17:50.

It is indeed a masterpiece. While beautiful and at times even magical, the tone of this work is so majestically icy that it hints of a kind of inhuman menace and is therefore darker overall than either his 2nd or 3rd, which are more transparently aggressive. This is part of its brilliance. (though not nearly as dark as No. 6)
Do these advertisers SERIOUSLY expect me to stop and watch their whole adverts bang smack in the middle of a movement? Counter productive. Thank goodness for ‘skip in 5’

Frankly, I think the greatest composers who have the best symphonies of all time are Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Mahler, Bruckner, AND OF COURSE THIS AMAZING COMPOSER WHO'SE TCHAÏKOVSKY!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for putting this on youtube. So good to see what's in the score of this masterpiece! Although we need a bit better orchestra to bring this magic score to sound... Also sound quality is a bit strange.
Papa, my favorite symphony is on. ❤❤ 4:15 4:17 4:19

It sounds very nostalgic. Was Gibbons longing to go back to mediëval times? Or maybe his childhood, like Chopin. He would have loved this music if only it had been available at the time! Great performance, thanks!
