Brings back memories! I used to train spot with my brother as a boy in Dundee. About 1959-60 I reckon. 46464 and its partner 46463 were great workhorses. Fantastic to see 46464 still alive. Well done to all involved with the Carmyllie Pilot Company and Strathspey Railway.
@StephenDrysdaleBroughtylad7 күн бұрын
I was also a teenage spotter in the early sixties and saw this loco and its sister running the local pick up goods trains and occasional passenger turn to St Andrews, Tayport or Arbroath. The two locos spent all of their working lives based at Dundee steam depot which I and my friends would visit to see what was on shed. Permissible trespass? as nobody ever stopped us or said anything. Anyway thanks for viewing and the comment and look out for A2 60532 Blue Peter which was based at Dundee for several years and has recently returned to steam after a long overhaul and it will heading this way some time in the future.👍
@colincruick6 күн бұрын
@@StephenDrysdaleBroughtylad Pity 46464 was never officially named. I only read about “the Carmyliie Pilot” a few years ago. On reflection , it was probably the early sixties when I train spotted too (not 1959-60). My dad arranged to take us to the sheds. Our favourite spotting places were at the Stannergate, and a play area at the bottom of Roseangle. My Brother still has his Ian Allen volume, and can still look up what’s underlined. Blue Peter was definitely one of them. I remember Union of South Africa and AH Peppercorn were Dundee regulars. But there were loads more. Dad also took us to Waverley Station and Polmadie sheds. When we went for a family holiday to London, my brother and I went spotting at Paddington station while my Mum dad and sisters went to see the sights! I’ll definitely keep a lookout for Blue Peter coming to Scotland. I live in Lanarkshire now, but my sister stays in the Ferry.
@StephenDrysdaleBroughtylad6 күн бұрын
@@colincruick My pals and I went to Perth and its shed many Saturdays until the mid sixties as you could see loco types like Duchesses, Royal Scots, Jubilees and Britannias coming in from Carlisle and the south which were not to be seen in Dundee. The Carmylie Pilot is a nickname given to the loco as it and 46463 were used on the Carmylie line as they had a low axle weight loading for the state of the track and were powerful enough to deal with the relatively steep inclines to be tackled on the branch. I lost all interest for many years after steam finished in 1968 but since I retired 10 years ago I have visited many of the preserved railways in the UK and I endeavour to capture any steam hauled tours heading this way including preserved sixties diesel locos. Steam hauled tours through Dundee are still uncommon but that could change with the re-installation of the turntable at the Aberdeen Ferryhill heritage centre where the original steam depot was as this will allow steam locos to be turned and make the route north from Edinburgh much more attractive for steam hauled days out.
@colincruick6 күн бұрын
@@StephenDrysdaleBroughtylad Similar story with me. Stopped in my teens. Now 74. Retained a passing interest, but not really a hobby. Have ‘done’ the Strathspey and Jacobite days out. I recall spotting the LMS locos at Perth station as well. Good to hear about the turntable development in Aberdeen. My house is right beside the line that goes through Wishaw station, Eurocentral and on to the north. So we see the Glasgow-Lanark, Glasgow-Carstairs-Edinburgh services, the long Eurocentral freight liners, and any temporarily diverted London-Glasgow trains. Very occasionally we get a steam engine puffing by the house. Is there a web site which might let interested folk like me of any upcoming steam events in Scotland?
@StephenDrysdaleBroughtylad5 күн бұрын
@@colincruick I am also 74 and our paths may have crossed back in those days and maybe at Perth station where there was usually a motley assembly of young spotters to be found at the foot of the stairs leading up to the St. Leonards road bridge. The turntable at the Ferryhill has been in operation for two years now and the heritage centre also provides servicing facilities for visiting steam locos and I have captured the locos that have passed this way heading to Aberdeen in recent years, kzread.info Apart from the daily Jacobite services, steam hauled tours in Scotland are much less common than in England although there is an increasing number of special diesel hauled excursions to the Highlands. Thanks for the comment and this is possibly another preservation first for this superb loco with this visit north of the border. I had only seen the loco once before as a static museum exhibit awaiting overhaul at the KWVR. I am now waiting for Kholapur to be back running on the mainline to complete the Jubilee set.👍
@@StephenDrysdaleBroughtylad First return to Scotland since being built in Glasgow 👍
Great captures. Regards, John
A magnificent looking machine that was running effortlessly with minimal assistance so thanks for the comment.👍
Two super video clips of the Jubilee.
Thanks for the comment although I don't think I got the panning just right today for these shots but at least it was pleasant weather.👍
I know 5025 is fresh out of overhaul and a massive crowd drawer, but 828 steals the show whenever she’s on screen
Yes 828 is a scene stealer with that lovely Prussian blue livery and thanks for viewing.
You got the platform to yourself with good results.
Just as expected for a Sunday morning except for the guy who you maybe know and who always takes up that spot along beside the fence.
Beautiful 37 😊
37's rule for sound effects and thanks for viewing.
Great catch there Stephen, I understand that 37676 derailed at Inverness causing a massive delay for the return leg and was left there, cheers 👍
They must be hardy souls who frequent these tours when you see the stupid o'clock morning start times some of them kick off and there is always the possibility of a very late finish due to adverse circumstances as has happened here but thanks for viewing.👍
@@StephenDrysdaleBroughtylad I was a steward on this train, it was both funny and annoying watching Loch Rannoch because we where holding up the Caley Sleeper, anyway it delayed us by 2/3hours but we cut 40 mins off of that in the end
I was referring to rail tours in general and not the SRPS and if I was a younger person would be happy to travel on one.
@@StephenDrysdaleBroughtylad I would recommend it, even though this one was delayed is still was good fun, I enjoyed working on it
No twerking, no woke, no phones. What a time to be alive.
Yes indeed a brilliant decade of music with superb guitar bands like Echobelly before the politically correct selfie generation became infected.
