My Spaniels Hunting and Trialing in New Zealand
Kia ora koutou (Hi), my channel is mostly videos of Hunting my Working Cocker Spaniels Archie and Owen in beautiful Otago, Aotearoa (New Zealand) . Sometimes with friends and their Spaniels and Spaniel Natural Game Trials (wild rabbits) which I enjoy but rarely win ribbons.

Bloody good watch!!
Glad you enjoyed😀
Would that small step after the rabbit flushed, would that go against a dog in a comp ?
I think a judge would like the slight hesitation and then the positive flush🙂
@@myspanielshuntingNZ Good to know that if I ever get another Springer. Thanks :)
Well I for one was impressed. He is getting better all the time.
Well we have two Novice trials Friday/Saturday next week that will be the test😀
@@myspanielshuntingNZ Please have someone video your run :)
Beautiful country, lovely dog. Good boy, Owen!
It is truely beautiful country, i am privileged to have access to it to train and hunt my Spaniels.
Is he realy planning on taking a rabbit?
Calm….calm…calm….was that for Owen or you 😂 Just as well you hit that one, the little dog worked his socks off !
Now that makes me laugh, yes we both are working on remaining calm, as you know well our Cockers keep us on the edge😆
you have a very well trained dog there.
We are still learning together 😀
Keep up the good work with Owen.
Are they wascally wabbits?
Oh definitely, destructive little critters and nearly as clever as Bugs🤣
Beautiful dogs, they are loving that!
Yes they certainly do😀
Beautiful country.
Yes very lucky to have access to it😀
It's pretty neat where he goes away too far. I prefer to see the dog in all aspects not just a video where he's 'perfect'
The trainer is by no means perfect so Archie and Owen are not either🤣, they wouldn't be true to their breed if the don't get up to mischief from time to time.
Awesome stuff .. nothing better than watching a dog work
Glad you enjoyed watching 😀
They are both showing a lot of improvement. So good to see :)
I am being a lot more deliberate in keeping my and their standards up when hunting. Glad you are seeing the improvement :-)
Im trying to train my jagd terrier to be a versatile hunter. What greaters hunters you have
Thank you and glad you enjoy the videos of us having fun hunting with our Working Cocker Spaniels, wish you lots of fun with your terrier😀
Archie is a bit manic, needs to slow down and then he will find the rabbits
Yes, you would of thought at 9 years old he would have figured that out😆.
hadir nyimak keseruanya kawann..dan hadir paket komplit sedang meluncur....mantap👍👍👍slm satu hobiii
He is improving all the time. So good to see.
Thanks, he is improving. Listening and keeping his head in the game more often, maybe when he is 10 he will be halfway trained🤣🤣
@@myspanielshuntingNZ Let us hope it will not be that long :)
Hi Howie, he is looking very good! Enjoyed watching that...cheers Nick
Thanks Nick, we are making progress, won Gun's Choice in our last Novice Trial but I am hoping we can take it up to the next level in the next Novice in June.
That was a very impressive run. Should do well in his next comp.
I would like to get to the point where straight off the lead he listens, we will continue 😀
Beautiful dogs
Glad you enjoy watching them hunt.
Gyp knew it was there great flush.
Gyp has a good nose. She came third today in the Championship Trial we held today at Ophir 😀.
A lovely wee dog
Yes she is😀
He had winded that from a good distance.
Yes the little devil was determined to get there😂
Hi There! I like this work . I have seen your many video . Video quality is very good I love this . But I have find some problem If you want may i explain this ?
Hi, i am glad you enjoy the viseos. I am happy to answer any questions or explain🙂
@@myspanielshuntingNZ I will be happy if i connect with you on social media . May i connect with you ?
Quality work mate , been watching your videos for a while , love seeing a dog doing what it was meant to do 👍
Glad you enjoy my humble videos, I am not the best trainer/handler but myself and my Cockers have a good time😀
What gun are you using?
Yildiz 20ga under/over. Nothing fancy but does the job well
@@myspanielshuntingNZ good stuff! I’m trying to work with my five month old spaniel to get ready for rabbit season in Georgia (USA) so I’ve been following your videos. Right now I have a Henry .410 lever action but am looking at a CZ drake
@@samuelhaywood1770 Glad you enjoy my videos, enjoy your pup😀
@@myspanielshuntingNZ how did you train your dog to sit when the rabbit flushes?
@@samuelhaywood1770 Hi Samuel, watch Hampshire Spaniel Training on KZread, he is the best at explaining how to get a Spaniel to a high standard of hunting😀
Pat your dogs once in a while. Cockers need a little attention beyond the whistle.
Yes, agreed😀
They can be dumbasses.
Archie's artistic interpretation of the final bit of a retrieve always amuses 🙂
Yes well put😆
Good to see a proper spaniel 😂
Well i do appreciate all good spaniels😄
I see Archie like to have a little chase like my Hazel here in the UK :)
Yes, on occasions he forgets his manners, I always forgive him though🙂
Wonderful cockers,do you have some puppies avaible ??
Go on Archie!
Still working well I see 🙂 Will Archie and yourself be at Craigmore this season?
Unfortunately my work roster means I work every Saturday so I won't be up at Craigmore this season.
Sorry to hear that, you and Archie will be missed.
Great work Archie.
Glad you enjoyed watching Archie doing what he loves, hunting rabbits😀
Hello, great dogs! I'm from Poland and this breed is very rarely used among hunters. I have a question, do you also use them when hunting pheasant?
@@dabster7438 kia ora (Cześć) Yes during the pheasant hunting season when the opportunity occurs😀.
@@myspanielshuntingNZ I am looking for a dog for this type of work. And I think I've already chosen. I will have to look for breeders from Great Britain. What about the dog's character? in Poland it is common that it is very heavy. suitable for a home with children? Regards 😉
@@dabster7438 There are lots of good breeders in the UK, make sure they are Working Cocker Spaniels (not show) Recommended Breeder in the UK is Fran Ardley of Tarncrag Gundogs, You can find her on Facebook. Working Cockers are great in the home with family and being a small dog. They are dog that should be active everyday, whether hunting, training or dog sports like agility. A bored Cocker is trouble. Good luck
Up towards Macraes Flat im guessing
Close, nearer Middlemarch 😀
I got a female working cocker spaniel that looks just like him. We cant hunt where we live but do alot of hikes and I keep her active everyday. Great dogs, hard to explain how intelligent they are. Amazing to see them do what they where bred for.
Wonderful to hear from you and glad you enjoy watching Owen having the best time, Working Cockers are the most fun companions whether hunting or hiking but then I am biased😃.
Love these videos. Little Archie has a mischievous streak doesn’t he 😂
Very mischievous Cocker could be his middle name and he is getting worse as he gets older, probably because I just laugh instead of trying to redirect his mischief. Glad you enjoy his work and antics.
lol my cocker spaniel is 10 weeks today. Sometimes when she retrieves the rope for me , she likes to take the scenic route back 😂
Yes it is something Cockers like to do if given the opportunity😀
great work Archie , and nice shot + nice retrieve. really well filmed
Always fun and occasionally we all get it right, glad you enjoyed the video.
When I got my rescue Cocker 3 years ago, I was out walking with him when a man commented on him. "He's a hunting dog," I told him. The man snorted derisively, "Yeah, right!" Well! I was highly offended. It wasn't until recently when I watched your videos that I realized Charlie acts just like Archie and I could actually work with him. I have always thought something happened to separate Charlie from his family when they were on a hunting lease in West Virginia, because he was picked up on the back roads, just skin and bones. Covered in scabs, hardly any fur, from fleas. He had Lyme disease and a broken leg. You would never know now that he experienced such trauma. I just wanted you to know that because I've watched your videos, I've made an appointment for field training. I'm so excited to add this new dimension to our relationship. And I have you to thank for it.
Let me know how you and Charlie get on with your training, Kind regards Howie
Let me know how you and Charlie get on with your training, Kind regards Howie
Oh my gosh I want to get on a plane with my Cocker Charlie and come to New Zealand! Just so we can hang out with you and your dogs. I'm 72, Charlie is about 10 years old, my second rescue cocker. I've never had a dog as driven as Charlie, who acts just like Archie only I don't have the control I need to have. Fortunately, we're surrounded by woods and fields, so I give him as much of that life as I can. He was picked up on the back roads of West Virginia and I've always thought he got lost on a hunting lease. Poor buddy. He was skin and bones, with a terrible flea infestation, all scabby and hardly any fur. On top of that, Lyme disease and a broken leg. He looks like a different dog now, but through it all, he's been a charmer. A very special dog. Thanks so much for this video. It helps me understand Charlie so much better.
Oh I love Charlie's story, so happy he found a kind home, hop on that plane and come and see us😀
Have to be happy with that performance.
Thanks Peter. Owen is getting better every time we go out.
@@myspanielshuntingNZ Yes, his improvement is quite a lot.
I have a 14 week old Cocker Spaniel. So cool to see them working.
Glad you enjoyed the video and hope you and your pup in time get to enjoy time out hunting together 😀
It was close though :)
Oh yes, there was a good set of teeth showing🤣
Looks like pulling you around a bit there Howard 😅 Hope you are well down under and enjoying your new year day already!
Thanks and wishing you a good 2024😀
That dog gets on my nerves, too wild for my liking
Work in progress and entirely my responsibility to where he is at present
Young gamey dog with drive, will settle in, looks like a lot of fun to me
@@aaronkite1173 That is the hope, he has potential and it is up to me to get him to reach his potential.
really entertaining , everything at warp speed !
Glad you enjoyed😀
what does the short 2 whistles mean? 3 short whistles?
Kia ora, usually two short whistles mean turn 180 degrees and three short whistles means come back to the handler. Everyone has a slight variation to this even though most of us use the same Acme 210.5 whistle, cheers Howie
They cover the ground so quickly all day long. Marvellous to watch. They just love it.
They are little bundles of hunting mischief and energy. Glad you enjoyed😀, watching.
