    I love my timbertek 6'10, I'm 79kg, but as I'm improving I wonder if it holds back my turns as I've bogged a few times on backside cutbacks. I've stuck a tail pad on it which looks awful but hopefully will cue me to have the foot further back.

    I don't understand something. When you say the double concave channels water out towards the fins, that sounds good but there's water everywhere under the board. There's not just two torrents heading towards the fins.

    Yeah fair comment and I’m definitely no hydrodynamics expert these are just the generally held understandings of the concepts. I guess it’s like an aeroplane too though the air is everywhere around the plane but the way it flows though the wings creates a pressure differential that causes lift. Same with fins ok they cause drag too but they are in the water and the difference in the foils creates “lift” or drive. If you bottom turned without fins in bot sure if you could leverage the same drive even if you had a more free down the line speed. Again I’m not really sure myself and neither are most people but those are the general documented concepts. Hope that helps. Cheers 😊

  • @lawson45uk
    @lawson45uk3 ай бұрын

    If you push a boat through water it directs the water flow and causes it to lift too. I know everything is in the water but the body has a speed that it moves through the water and that is what causes the interaction i think but again. No hydrodynamics experts. Cheers

    Fish paddle jumper or hydra for a beginner small waves surfer?

  • @lawson45uk
    @lawson45uk5 ай бұрын

    Hi. Depends on your weight age ability etc but if your a genuine beginner in small waves you should probably be starting with something more like a 7’10” fun board or mini mal that’s beginner friendly and ride that as your only board for at least a year. You will get more waves and progress much quicker that way. Something like the puddle jumper might be good for someone that’s making the move from that point to intermediate as a first shorter board. Cheers.

    How is this board on late drops/takeoffs? I've had a 7'2 FCD for years and it has save my arse many times on late drops, very forgiving, just a pinch of a weight shift back and I'm good. FCD is old and beat along with expensive, price range on this model skindog is perfect, but I'm older and slower so I only expect the late drops to increase. 🙂

    Hi Go Surf, how would you compare the South Island Fish to the Superblob. It seems like the fish is shaped for local conditions in mind and the superblob takes a lot of inspiration from the fish. Tossing up between the two models and would love to hear your thoughts.

  • @lawson45uk
    @lawson45uk6 ай бұрын

    Yeah the fish is more of a fishy ride as obvious as that may sound probably a bit more versatile too and heavier and more traditional in the bigger sizes. The super blob is more like a smaller wave board generally made in the lighter and more modern construction. Can be a bit less grippy too with the wide tail and no fish cut out. Both fun boards though. Maybe get a demo and see which you like best

    Hi Thanks for the review I'm strugglling to decide, Special T 9' or Harley Ingleby HI4 9'1. For small weak waves (1 to 4ft), we don't have long clean peelers on the beach break I surf. Nose riding ability is great but you have to deal with a lot of close out and steep face when the waves hit the sand bar. What I need is to catch the wave early, and be able to ride the pocket if it isn’t nose rideable. The flater rocker & bottom of the T should make it a good paddler, but how would you compare it with the HI4? When things get more serious would the T still be in the game ? Regards, Daniel

  • @lawson45uk
    @lawson45uk8 ай бұрын

    Hi Daniel. Yeah that’s a tough one. Those are two of my favourite boards. Not ridden the Hi4 but really like the look of it. It’s gonna be so subjective to your waves and riding it’s hard to say but I think you have the right thoughts. I had been riding the special T in thunderbolt red before I got injured and use that for most waves and really enjoy it. Find it paddles well and performs well. Doesn’t feel that much like a signed fin. Suspect the Hi4 has a little more curve and a little more rocker so could suit a slightly more powerful or sectiony wave. Hard to say not having ridden it. The nose js bigger on the Hi4 too though. I think both could be good choices so probably trust your own judgment as sounds like you know what you want and understand the differences. Cheers

    Hi hard to say just on pure projection but the bean bag is definitely a more grovelly board and better at those tiny junky waves. It will flow in the pocket and dance around nicely. The RNF had more rocker and less width front and back so prefers a little more wave. Bean bag is the best grovel board I have had and the original sweet potato was also great. Cheers.

    Hi mate, which out of the CI AM Keels and the Machado Keels would you say for adding hold and stability to a twin? My pin tailed twin is a bit loose in bigger surf using the Jim Banks Hooker fins and want to tone it down a bit in overhead surf..

  • @lawson45uk
    @lawson45uk10 ай бұрын

    Hi just had a look at the hooker fin. That’s less area than the ci and machado thought it looks like he also has some others that are similar area and shape to the ci. I would say the ci and machado would both add a little hold. I think I would lean a little towards the ci myself. I think That machado is a touch bigger and more upright but the way the ci has sweep and back cut it’s probably a little more suited to hold and release while still providing so one responsiveness. The machado be a little more down the line speed oriented but since you want more speed control than speed creation I think the CI be be the go. Keels aren’t ideal for bigger waves for me personally but the ci is definitely more designed in that kinda way. Cheers

    Hi mate. I kept both for a long time but just hd a second spine surgery so sold both just before that. There both excellent boards. You can’t go too wrong with either. Probably let your preference for epoxy or PU or if you like your boards a bit heavier and more planted drive your decisions or even if something pops up second hand at a good price. The two I had were different lengths and volumes too so even my experience and outlook probably a little swayed. The retro rides a touch more retro and a little less slippery really depends on your style. If you like longer turns with good speed carry the retro is a little more of that and the seaside will perform a little more bit again all relative to what size you get. Both are excellent boards. Hey Dave, great review as always! There aren't a lot of detailed reviews for this board so I thought I would share my thoughts after riding it for a month. I picked up the 7'6" during the recent sale (6'1" and 215lbs) after seeing my buddy hanging 5 on it in Malibu. I rode it in everything from 1 foot mush to head high sets and it really shined when the waves got good. I think it will be a great step up board for when waves get bigger this winter. The Board has a hug sweet spot and on bigger sets, you can literally 2 stroke into waves. I agree with you that it's not a paddle beast as it tends to nose dive a bit, but there is a weird things with this board where you wont think you are in the wave then it "locks" and you start flying down the face. Hard to explain, but you know it when you feel it, almost like hitting the go button and dropping in like a skateboard from the top. The 2+1turns really well on rail and its hold is incredible when the wave pitches + if you shift your feet around you can link sections and blast around flat spots / whitewater. I have a quad set for it but haven't found the need to try them yet. Im using it almost like a big guy short board / sitting out the back a bit with the long boarders and have been really stoked on it. It tends to slows your waves down and gives you time to think about what you want to do next on the wave. As a big guy it it helps even the playing field with people sitting out the back and lets you get in before the guys sitting on the inside on short boards. Long rides, great hold, turns much better than expected and its super stable. Thunderbolt Red is flexy and feels incredible as usual. Love everything minus the paddling but getting used to it. Board Reference - Seaside & Beyond 7'4" - Great but with lowish volume, it just felt too long for how it paddled and turned. My shorter Seaside paddles about the same but with less board to swing on turns. Ova turns better IMO. - 7'0" Outlier 2+1 is incredible for small or mushy surf but tends to slide out on steep waves or backside on anything that is head high since it so flat. Paddles better than Ova and glides like a long board but much less hold on good waves. This board seems to be a perfect middle ground and great shape for most of the days I surf. I bet the 7'0" would be a great 1 board quiver for most people 140-185 and 7'6-8' for big boys 185+. I rode it at Malibu, Porto, Middles / Uppers, San O, Point Breaks in Mexico. Cheers!

    Hi Great detailed feedback really appreciate that. Hope it helps others too..Not sure if it was you I was talking to but sold mine as I had to have another back operation so cleared out a lot of boards till I work out where I am at and what I can do after recovery. It was a friend that bought it though and he said exactly the same. He's able to use it in everything from smaller to bigger waves and finds it's smoothing his surfing out and a good option for when the wave doesn't have quite the shape for his shorter board here which is often. I think the Outlier would be a good one from our local wave too from everything I hear very flat faced a lot of the time so we dont need much rocker and do need help to get in and make sections.I agree too does everything nicely as a single with sides I think that was the main intention of the fin set up and good hold. For me it was just a little harder to duck dive than I was expecting which was quite surprising. For everything else it was really on point as an all rounder your kinda rarely on the "wrong board" for the conditions when it does most things well. Anyways glad your stoked and thanks for your time commenting. I wont ramble on myself for too long as you nailed it with your description and comparison. Cheers :-)

    Ho Dave thanks for your video! I am looking for a mid to ride when I am just lazy or want to to cruise. I am 31, good paddler and was thinking about the ova over the mid6 or the moe just because it is more versatile. a mid 6 for my understanding surf like a short board basically with more liters ecc ecc. like the fact that the ova change between the fin set up and love skindog surfboards and I think it can be an awsome travel board to have in the quiver. I just came from a Maldives trip and I think with a quad set up would have performed well also int the “juicy” days we had for an early entry and to have right amount of speed especially in backhand trains. I found one discounted one 30% brand new and 7’. I am deciding if go for it in these days

  • @lawson45uk
    @lawson45uk Жыл бұрын

    Hi mate. Yeah I was keen on a Mid 6 but thought the 7 was a bit refined lower volume and quite a bit of rocket for me but would make an excellent “sensible and conservancy ” step up im short and like to be able to duck dive my boards too so 7 is about the limit of length I can do that easily on. The 7’6” mid 6 looks quite different to the 7 more volume and a bit more width so doesn’t look as blade like. I actually sold my ova. A friend bought it and he’s loving it for exactly what you said. He can ride it in small and bigger waves and likes the fin options. He’s in pretty good shape and taller too so seems to suit him well. I found it a little hard to duck dive think the nose is a little wider than I thought so even though it’s thin it was a bit harder to sink than the one I made myself and that’s much thicker. If you think it rip suit you it probably will it’s pretty versatile nice to ride lots of options and the thunderbolt tech is great. Especially if your getting a bargain price. Hope that helps.

    how do you feel it catches waves compared to a parallax or a special t ? looking for a groveller kind of longboard when waves are small and gutless

  • @lawson45uk
    @lawson45uk Жыл бұрын

    Hi. Not ridden the Parallax sorry but this one catches waves a bit better than the 9’0” Special T I slightly prefer the 9’0” special T myself as I’m short so find the special T more responsive at not too big a sacrifice on wave catching. If you we’re talking the special T in a 9’6” it may paddle better than the 9’4” but again not ridden both to compare sorry. The Haven did definitely add a bit of wave catching ability compared to the other 9’0” boards I had too to be fair. I was catching more small waves more easily. Just that bit more trim power. I find there is quite a difference between 9’0” and 9’6” boards in both the way they catch waves and ride. I always find 9’6” a little bigger than I want personally but if I were closer to 6ft than 5’6” it might be a different story. I like the 9’0” Special T as a do it all board myself for the local conditions. Cheers.

Almost like an ultimate groveler but also handles larger waves when they are rolling or off a point. Once it gets punchy or powerful it tends to slide out on the bottom turns just because of how flat the rocker is. 1-4 foot it catches everything and turns really well for how long it is.

I might sell the HI4 and just keep those two. Haven’t decided. But I should t keep all of em! Lol I hope your back is doing better. Surgery and recovery sucks. I too have back issues. Did you prefer this board or the psycho killer lost board ? Cheers

    Personally liked the psycho killer better as it’s a bit more suited to being an all rounder and I like quads but there both good boards and in a similar category. Definitely rate both models but prefer the lost for me personally as it will ride as a quad or a thruster and handle a good range of waves and just really forgoing and does everything well. Hope that helps. Cheers.
