Everyone always says, "Call 911!!" But you can't always do that. You need to know how to turn the baby, how to deliver the shoulders, how to deal with bleeding... I was studying to be a midwife. One of my best textbooks was, "The Country Midwife"; all you need to know re: delivery. Note: It disturbs me greatly that many are so quick to clamp the cord... As long as the cord is pulsing, the placenta is continuing to provide oxygen to the baby, which is crucial, as this allows time for the baby to breathe in their own time. Never try to rush the delivery of the placenta! The placenta will "die" as soon as it detects that its job is done...when the baby is breathing and the cord has stopped pulsing. Though most placentas detach and are ready to be expelled within approximately fifteen minutes after death, it can take up to an hour or so. Remember to NEVER PULL on the umbilical cord to try to "hurry it up," as the blood vessels from the placenta must disconnect from the uterine wall, and if rushed, can cause massive bleeding. To help slow or calm bleeding, put the baby to the mother's breast. Sucking on the breast stimulates the uterus to clamp down. If the baby is unable to suckle, or if it's suckling is too weak, someone else must suck on the breast. Also, to calm bleeding, raise the mother's legs, and, if necessary, massage the mother's uterus...you may have to do this deeply, but be careful, very careful, to only massage as strongly as needed. Make sure the infant is laying against its mother's skin, preferably on her chest. The shared energy greatly helps them both.
