    Even though I'm not that good at playing the base game to start with, I still like the Distilled mini expansion. I agree, the box design is more than clever. My favorite mini expansions are - surprise! - the European dogs and the famous dogs expansions for Dog Park 😂

    Bit of a cheat as I got it as part of the big box version, but the mini expansion for Isle of Skye that added a few new end game bonus tiles, such as the ability to rescore a player bonus was great. Have been looking at the Sea, Salt and Paper one, but haven't got round to picking it up yet. On another note, i'm the weirdo that has (or is just about to) send you an email :)

    Excellent suggestions! I really appreciate the two mini expansions for A War of Whispers: Dark Alliances, and Conquests & Treasures. They make the 5 army decks more dynamic by adding events, player interactions and wild cards that allow you to play more interesting options on the base cards.

    While we have played it at bigger player counts, we played the whole tutorial campaign at two and had a great time. There was a real race at the end as we headed to different parts of the ship to be the first to escape! Chris & Zach's playthrough on the review section of the GF page, is a great advert for how much fun it is as a 2-player game. I've seen it played both semi co-op and fully co-op with 2 players and it works equally well both ways.

    Hi and thanks for good video... 👏 So,I need for your recommend.I bought Root base game recently.Even have not played yet.And don't know any rules about this game.We'll play it mostly 2 players,may be sometimes 3 or 4. As I heard that Marauder ex. is better for 2p,I bought Marauder.Then I heard another one(exiles and partisans deck) is great also.Ordered and it's on its way, it's coming... My question: After having these 3 Root boxes(Base game,Marauder and exiles and oartisans deck) will I need any other expansions especially for 2 and may be sometimes 3p? Or it's enough to have fun with those 3 boxes..? Please recommend... Thanks in advance 🙏

  • @BoxedMeeples
    @BoxedMeeples14 күн бұрын

    @Shura-23 hi, so glad you're exploring Root. If you have access to the Digital Version either on Steam or the App I'd always suggest new players explore that to understand how the factions work.. The game isn't at its best at two, but the Hirlings expansion was specifically designed to solve that problem. A good two player start would be the Cats vs the Eerie (both base) game factions. Then add the Woodland Alliance for the 3rd

  • @BoxedMeeples

    @Shura-23 I presume someone suggested the Maurauders Expansion for the Rats, as they play similar (but much more aggressive) to the Cats. I wouldn't touch the Badgers till much later though as they play very differently to the others. Cats vs Rats would be a fun way to play?

    According to BGG my favourite abstract game would be Blokus. Not sure I completely agree with the non-deterministic part of their definition though, as the outcomes in games from some of BGG's top list (Blokus, Cottage Gardens, Lanterns and to a sense Tsuro) are technically determined by the available resources and the actions of your opponent(s). However; If we were to use the literal definition of abstract, which is anything that isn't real, then surely a lot of boardgames (as well as films/ videogames/books) are abstract? Maybe Abstract isn't the right term to be calling them. Whoops, sorry, gone off on a tangent there 😅

  • @BoxedMeeples
    @BoxedMeeplesАй бұрын

    Yes, we agree it's an interesting term to use. How much theme is too much that it no longer qualifies? Should this just be games like Qawale? We took it to be a slightly wider category than others might

  • @blueseqperl
    @blueseqperlАй бұрын

  • @Skyrodin
    @SkyrodinАй бұрын

    For me an abstract game is a game without a theme. One where you just play with... abstract shapes. I don't remember what it's called but the abstract game I'd want to try most is one where everyone has those different coloured balls and needs to build a pyramide with them. And each game has some additional rules like... a red ball must not touch a blue one. Or... yellow balls can't be in the bottom layer. Just checked (a.k.a. searched for half an hour). The game is called Dimension. Even though BGG doesn't list it as abstract. But I'm starting to doubt my definition as well since I keep thinking "but Boop and Santorini are abstract games as well!!!"

  • @BoxedMeeples
    @BoxedMeeplesАй бұрын

    Oh yes, we think Dimension is a good suggestion. It's interesting to think about at what point it is that a theme or mechanism moves games from abstract into another category. Some people may not include Nuntak for example, but it won best abstract at UKGE awards this year

    @@BoxedMeeples Mantis Falls is a 2021 release. Still in stock in several shops. If you are curious about the gameplay, TheGameBoyGeek channel has a great how to play video. I've never seen social deduction done for 2 players like that before. It's awesome (the 3 players mode is not as good)

    It's always great to find deduction that works at two! Now to find a solo deduction game !!

    Great choices! So, you’ve been Eaton has been on my radar for a while. The most unusual game I have played would have to be Gloom. It is a quirky card game with clear plastic cards, that has you fighting to be the most miserable family! 😊

    That does sound unusual! You Should certainly give So You've been eaten a try, we show the the deluxe version in the video but the standard one is often reduced.

    Some of my favorite games with unusual themes would be: - Psychic Pizza Deliverers Go to Ghost Town - the brand new Xylotar - Soda Smugglers - (and just for the artwork & name alone) Surfosaurus Max Always fun to play something that brings a new or unusual theme to the table!

    It's great that so many games try new things and original ideas. Love to hear more about Surfosaurus Max ! We also see a huge amount of creativity when playing the Button Shy Games

    Excellent games. My most unusual game is Gay Sauna that uses consent as a key mechanic while being naughty along the way.

    Libby saw this at Essen in 2022. Such a vibrant and attention-grabbing stand. Was so much fun to play

    So, You've Been Eaten is great! I bring this to game night every so often but I rarely end up in a two-player-only scenario there. I'll keep bringing it with hopes to show a friend how this gem works. Excellent choice 👌.

    Hopefully, you'll get to play it soon. It's quite a quick game to play, so we typically play with both sides in a session..

    We got to July in Pandemic Zero but then the couple we were playing with had a baby, so we had to abandon Coop ! From what we had played through it was lots of fun

    @@BoxedMeeples we just played September (PS0) and lost for the first time. It is getting very intense! Just started playing Spots and I really like it. But have only played it at two. I think it will be an even better at a higher player count! 😊
