  he had a love/hate relationship with his father. It's not a changed storyline, it's that Chuck only had his dad to raise him growing up and his dad resented him and Chuck turned to drinking and women early in life to deal with his emotions and the taxing bit of trying to impress his dad who was never impressed by him. Before his dad died, they actually made amends, somewhat, where Chuck was told he was not to blame for his mom's death and then they decided on going to hockey games together.
