Great video! Greetings from Brazil!! 😊🇧🇷
Glad you appreciated it. Happy writing!
Hi Steve 0:01
Hi! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for your videos! I'm a new writer, and I have an opportunity to be in a writer's room if the series gets picked up for a full season. So, I have been watching all your videos to prepare. Thanks!!!
Congratulations!! Let me know how it goes. Hope the videos are helping. If there’s anything I haven’t covered here, let me know. And check my website for other resources!
@TVsteve65 Thanks! I've been watching your videos on the writer's room. They have been helpful. I'm going through the rest of your videos now. A lot of good tips!!
Thanks for the advice! Do you have any thoughts, advice, or recommendations for best practices when fighting for your idea/vision while remaining collaborative throughout the many phases of selling and producing your scripts?
Solid question. Part of the opportunity is to lean into the "collaborative" part and let go of the "fighting" part. Seriously, it's good to start from a place of being willing to receive help when it's offered and to understand that most suggestions are genuinely an attempt to make the piece better. That said, a few things to think about: 1) What's the note behind the note? It may not be so much about the specifics but about an underlying story issue that could be fixed some other way than what's suggested. 2) Weigh the value of the suggestion. Would it HURT the script to make a change? If not, maybe it's worth doing. (There are many times when I find that a change might be simpler than I imagine at first. In those instances I realize how easily I get defensive when I hear the note, but I come to see that it's not a big deal.) 3) IF you feel like it would FUNDAMENTALLY ALTER what you're trying to do, then I'd firmly push back and not do the note. (And, depending on the circumstance, you may have to be willing to walk away from a partnership if this becomes a sticking point.) 4) Whether you take a note or not, TAKE THE TIME to consider it fully. Always be prepared, in any note session to say "Let me think about that." That holds the door open for a collaborative exchange.
@@TVsteve65 TY so much! Especially about weighing the value and taking a step back to recognize why I might get defensive over a note for no real reason other than me feeling a certain type of way. Especially when the note is a simple and quick revision.
Hi Steve, thanks for your advice. Coming directly here from Film courage. Good advice on log lines. ❤
I’m in! Thanks!
interessting. this randomly popped-up in my suggested videos, so the algorithm might be do the same for other folks
Cool. Welcome to the channel.
Great advice
Brooks' sharing David Mamet's response to "who is your target audience" made me laugh. Nice episode!
Great video! Being kind is the best way to live.
Thanks, Jon!
@@TVsteve65 You're welcome. Keep up the great work!
Nice video! I am not a writer, nor did I know what a general meeting is. I clicked on the video because of the engaging smile in the thumbnail. 🙂 Upon some reflection, maybe the reason I got this video is because I was researching how to get a band booked on a TV show, which I suppose is an adjacent field. In any case, this was an enjoyable and informative video. It may come in handy someday when I least expect it. Thanks! (PS. You have a typo in the title.)
Thanks, 7piece! Glad you enjoyed the video and I've now fixed the typo. Good looking out!
"Peace, groundedness, and gratitude" is always the best way to operate.
Hello dear. Are you looking for a professional KZread thumbnail designer Let me know please Thanks?
I'm good for now, thanks!
And yes, a more sensitive sensible approach is wise! 😅
🎉thanks as always brilliant 😂
Also what you can do is be coached by Steve! He's incredible 🎉
Thank you! Coaching and helping people is one of the reasons I'm on the planet.
Thank you for sharing about why unions are important! Thanks for sharing your story 😊
You’re welcome!
Concise video with good advice. So much of surviving downturns in film industry is "let go of worry" - but also need to be careful to save $ when times are good so you have a shot at letting go of worry during uncertainty.
Yes, saving money is key to this strategy.
Really good video!
Thank you!
Write on! Thank you for sharing your time.
You're welcome!
As ever fantastic information and insight 🎉
Thanks.
Hey Steve H, Good to see you here. Well done and best regards, Tom W in Mnishota Makoce - recovering short person
Thanks, Tom! Good to see you, too!
so useful as always! Do you have any insights on being a TV Director or producer? I would love to hear!
I'm not a TV Director (not as of yet) so I can't really tell you about that, though I've worked alongside them (see the TV Writer On Set playlist for some insights). As for being a producer, it depends on what you mean by that. In TV, "producer" can mean many things. Writers of a certain level have the title of producer (I'm a Co-Executive Producer), but also there are non-writing producers who handle logistical things (like deal with budgets or hiring or travel). In film, producers are (by and large) money people. For insights into writer/producer duties in TV, see the TV Writer On Set playlist - that's where I cover those duties from a writer's perspective. If you still have questions after that, let me know.
Will do. Thanks!@@TVsteve65
Hi, Could you do one on the subject of research. At what point of writer's room does it occur (say trying to make a period drama as close to historically accurate, or a Sci Fi or medical show in which you want to get the science right)
Thanks for the idea. Will add it to my list of video subjects!

😅
Excellent 🎉 as always, thank you!
Thanks!
Thanks! Love “Be kind.” And “Be curious.” ❤
so helpful as always! Thanks Steve! ❤🎉
So glad!
🙌🏿
so interesting! thanks! In a weekly show is there a tone meeting every week? and just crew attend? not actors?
Yes, every episode gets a tone meeting. The meeting is for the benefit of the episode's director and does NOT include the actors. [In fact, part of what the writer/writing team conveys to the director is about the actors - giving a heads up about actor habits and possible performance issues that might impact the episode.]
So cool, thanks, and makes sense!@@TVsteve65
thanks for all your encouragement and support, Steve! Have you sent out a newsletter recently? I’m pretty sure I signed up, but I haven’t seen anything in a while. Anyway, no rush! Just checking. You take care of yourself too!❤
Hey Beth! You're welcome! The newsletter comes out once a month. The next one is being sent out today!

Steve! Thank you for sharing your invaluable knowledge and perspective. Your videos have had an immediate effect on my progression as a writer and I'm so appreciative. I'm working to become a part of this industry and when I do, I'll be sure to pay it forward and support the next generation any way I can. No gatekeepin' round these parts!
Good to hear, Noel. Cheering you on!
congrats, Steve! Thanks for all you do! I do have some questions about being a film producer. Do you have some good resources for that? Thanks again!🎉🎉
Hey Beth! I don't have any go-to resources for that, but a quick search reveals a TON of other KZread channels that focus on that area. You might check them out. Good luck. Also - anyone reading this may have resources - feel free to post answers for Beth, everyone!
Thanks Steve!@@TVsteve65
Thanks for sharing this, Steve
This pipeline reminds me of software production. AGILE development works great for consistent product release cycles.
That's a fascinating parallel. Thanks.
Thanks! So useful, Steve!
So glad!
love your positivity, Steve!
Thanks!
really helpful, Steve. Thanks! I am about to rewrite my short film script. Thanks again!
Sweet!
Super helpful tips!!
Glad to hear that. Let me know how it goes when you use them!
Two of my fav screenplay teachers!
Thank you, Beth!
Super informative, thanks! What about sci-fi and fantasy? They function similarly? I would imagine so. :-)
Yes. As long as it's a TV drama (60 minutes, emphasis on emotion or action rather than jokes) it likely has a similar set up in the writers' room.
Thanks! What about a 30 minute story? @@TVsteve65
