    4:45 That smile and chuckle from Shawn brings me joy. He's both a judge and FISM winner. He knows cards and sleight of hand. But it looks like that reaction stems from him genuinely having not seen you load the card. For just a second, he went from judge to delighted spectator. I do magic, but I rarely do magic for magicians, just out of paranoia of looking like a goober. But if that kind of reaction is what is there, I need to start.

    This has to be my favorite act from Penn and Teller that did not fool them. It’s easily in my top 5 favorite acts from the show. Everything was fantastic. You were just so funny and and gave such an incredible performance. That, and you’re obviously no magic slouch. This is such a difficult trick to pull off as seamlessly as you did it. You may not have fooled them, but you gave them what, in my opinion, is one of the better performances from the show.

    First time seeing Penn trying to sabotage a performance by deliberately choosing a different position for the queen (in the second step) after seeing the queen (as we all did) in the central position. Was he trying to challenge the magician or to communicate that he spotted the slight of hand? In any case, good comeback by Eric.

  • @eriktait434

    I honestly don’t think he was trying to sabotage me. I think that I hadn’t figured to scripting out the way it is now and he was deliberately acting like a lay person.

    Execellent performance Erik. I hope that one day I will be able to compete at FISM. I am one of the podcast listeners, and when I found out you were going to TAOM also, I got very excited. I am only fourteen, and this will be my first magic convention. I tried out for the junior close up contest and I was accepted, and I will be honored of you would come to watch it. It would make my day. I am a huge fan of yours, and I really hope we can “throw some cards around!” Congrats on winning third place in FISM, and I hope I’ll get to meet you at TAOM! Kindest regards, Jake McCord

    I enjoyed watching this video. But I have a question. In Shawn's position, he must have seen a lot of secrets that he shouldn't have seen. What do you think?

  • @eriktait434
    @eriktait43410 ай бұрын

    A decision was made very early on in the construction of the routine to have the best show for the audience and just accept that the person on my left can see everything. The piece is specifically built for competition. So the person on my left will usually be a polite and compliant magician. There are many moments that misdirect that person so they still experience magic, but when building a competition routine I make different choices than I would when building a routine I am going to perform for lay people.

    I am magician and i crazy about the monte tricks. And you add something to this category of trick. You add an very good presentation and original effect. It's not just "Find the queen" ! All the effect of this trick is justified and execute with a method i'd never seen before. And a final with 3 clear card is just... beautyful !

  • @eriktait434

    As a long time IBM member Shawn is a good friend of mine. However in the context of competition I wanted to proceed the way I would with any random person so the judges could get the feel of the routine without doing inside jokes between friends. If this had been a performance at a convention it would have been different. But this was world championship competition. So. Yeah, I asked him his name.

    Honestly, the most impressive thing to me about this performance, is being comfortable enough to give Alyson room to do her brilliant comedic things, in a back and forth fashion. Most "comedic" magicians aren't secure enough(or good enough) to be able to go there when on stage. You're legit funny, Erik.
