Like all of Gene's body of work, this is a sleeper and an underrated gem. He was an artistic success when the definition of commercial success didn't match.

Love the jingly jangly sound of the Rickenbackers. I owned one in my early days. I had the thin bodied 360. Totally different from the John Lennon's 325 by the way.

I recently bought two copies of the New Christy Minstrel debut album. One has the group in silhouettes on the front cover and the other has photos (including Larry Ramos). Same album, tunes and even liner notes. It mentioned Jerry Yester (Lovin' Spoonful member and a Facebook Friend) so I emailed him about it. The album was only suppose to be a recording with no live band to tour behind it. Turns out Columbia like the group and booked them onto TV. So Randy Sparks had to call Jerry up where he was doing a trio gig in another state. Asked him to come back, but Jerry had signed a contract and couldn't break it in time to do the show. Randy put together an entirely new group with Larry Ramos included. There is no picture of Jerry on any of the versions of this cover and his name eventually disappeared from the liner notes on the later editions.

This was another Saturday night broadcast of Ninth Street West on LA's Channel 9 KHJ, one of many shows I never missed. I guess McGuinn and Crosby are switching roles for laughs. Gene wrote this astonishing song that even now gives me chills, and "the fizz." I could only wish he could have received more recognition for his extraordinary songwriting, and also his rather unique singing voice. I still think he deserved to have the lead vocal role because of these two attributes, but competing egos put the kibosh on that.

Also if ya dig this song by The Byrds on youtube 😀 you may enjoy the song " Most of All " By Glenn Kaiser and Where Roses Grow Live by Rez Band Awesome songs check them out. I remember hearing the song by Led Zepp " In My Time of Dyin " during my drug years and made me think about death and Jesus. Then a hippy friend that dug Jesus told me more of Jesus love and forgiveness and how I could also know Jesus love. So in 1981 I cried out to Jesus and wow man He came into my life and I had and have so much joy and peace and now know that through Jesus when I die I will be with Him in Heaven. Hey Jesus loves each of you also and yall can know Him if you are at all open. Just cry out to Him and also read the Gospel of John in the Bible or check out the movie on KZread. 😀

One could argue that Gene Clark had the strongest voice, and I would argue strenuously that he should have been the lead singer on most of their songs. David Crosby's voice was also legendary, but at this point in the band, his role was a high-tenor harmony. McGuinn, for whatever reason, tended to dominate the lead singing, when Clark's obvious talent for singing should have been front and center.

The producers didn’t care if they were singing the ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic’ the dancers were were going to shake their booty like all hell was breaking out. Great for young boys of all ages, but also real dumb, and a sour note to a great band.

Itoo was in college then. I was playing a gig with a folk trio one night at a Catholic girls college. One of the songs we did was Ain't no more cane on the Brazos, covering the Chad Mitchell Trios version. Later in the evening, the girls voted us off in favor of a new Beatles lp. Oh well. Those guys were pretty good.
