Thank you for the quick and easy slide lesson. I also read the recent obit for Bobby Koefer and realized I have some of his older recordings. What a Life and what an interesting man. Thanks again.

Didn't Koefer use an E13th tuning as his main tuning?
@andykeen32094 ай бұрын
I can't tell you for sure, but it sounds right. I'm not sure which E13 tuning exactly, there's a ton of variations out there on E13th tuning! I just picked this out by ear and tried to make it fit at a single position on the fretboard, but I found the video he plays this lick on after I made this video and he's clearly not playing it in just 2 frets, he's moving down to lower fret positions as the lick descends. Luckily since there's no chords in this passage, you could probably play this pretty easily on most tunings, since the intervals between strings have a lot of overlap between most tunings.

Hey, sorry, the tunings can be confusing for sure. This is an E9 pedal steel guitar and I’m holding down a knee lever (“e” lever) that lowers 2 of the string down a half step. This makes the pedal steel have 7 strings in the same order as a lap steel guitar tuned to C6th tuning. Most modern steel guitars only have 6 strings but some do have 8 strings and I think that’s what Bobby Koefer played in his day. I can’t tell you his exact tuning but it was a “6th” tuning such as C6 or A6 (3 half step difference, obviously). Here’s where the part about a “5th” comes in. A 6 string lap steel tuned to C6 tuning usually has the top 2 strings as C and E notes, and those are the 1st and 3rd tone in a C major scale. Referred to as “root” and “3rd”, respectively. The 8 string C6 or A6 tunings have 2 more strings than the 6 string counterpart, and one string is on top and one on bottom. The one on “top” is the higher tone in the scale, usually tuned to a “g” note, which is the 5th tone in the C major scale (and 3 half tones higher than the top string 3rd tone on a 6 string lap steel), and hence, I refer to it as “the 5th”. Takes a long time to answer that question, so that’s why I breezed over it. I hope that helps!

I'm a piano player and I found my dad's steel guitar books from when he was young end the tuning in the Hawaiian steelbook was D 9th and A6th respectively.. my dad's tuning was a b-flat major 9th with sharp 11 on his 10 string bigsby.
