What a surprise to hear this on harpsichord and with the stunning cadenza at the end, before the final resolution. The frequent tempo changes come as a surprise following Bigg's organ versions, but they add variety and excitement. Plucked strings, pedals, rhythmic crispness not possible on an organ with its echo-acoustic, the interpretation makes its case brilliantly. Bach did not have access to the modern pianoforte with its range and depth; Biggs makes the utterly convincing case that it does not matter, and the piece makes the same impression. I love that Biggs plays the instrument - meaning, he's playing the piece differently on pedal harpsichord than he would on an organ, because the instrument has different demands. I love how he make the distinction through his play.

I never thought I'd hear this again. My parents had this record in the 70's, and while the entire album is one of my favorites, the first Allegro is the finest harpsichord piece I ever heard. Still know it note for note after 50 years.

This recording is actually from the album "Bach Organ Favorites, Volume 6" released by Columbia in '74. The album cover in the video is different, and applies to the other recordings on pedal harpsichord (like the Fantasy and Fugue, Toccata and Fugue, etc.)

I grew up on this recording of these etudes. As a kid, I thought “everybody” must play the piano like this. I was WRONG. The older I get the more I realize just how wrong I was. Berman was an absolute titan. I can only name about five or six pianists in the twentieth century who could claim to be his equal, and you know who they are…

Can anyone else breath between 8:50 and 9:50? It's as if just too much music in there all happening at once, but it's all so crystal clear. Josquin would be proud. Totally metal.

The same thought struck me... this magnificent piece is a journey, once embarked upon it must be followed to the end, but with Bach the second half of the piece becomes indescribably rich as it escapes from the confines of the Passacaglia into a multi-textured fugue... the most incredible thing is that whichever instruments it is transposed to, the mathematical progressions and harmonies impress beyond anyone else.

This B minor rhapsody is my favorite of Brahms' solo piano pieces. I performed this piece in my junior year. Yes I interpret it quite orchestrally, with a fair amount of damper pedal, much like Perahia does here, though I've done it with less rubato and slightly different dynamic choices in spots.Very nicely recorded here, it sounds utterly spontaneous. Thanks for uploading this for everyone to enjoy!
