Taking an intro course is definitely a good idea! I would say the best thing you can do is get a tandem instruction ride. It gets you in the air, you can steer the craft, and decide if it freaks you out too much.

How much should a beginner spend on a new set up? Any suggested manufacturers?

You can get a decent used motor for around $5000, and you may be able to get a used wing for between $1500-$2000. If you went new, you could get everything for $10,000-$12000. I fly a kangook paramotor and a flow wing. Ozone also makes a great wing. Another great motor is gravity defiant. There are lots of other brands out there, and it is mostly pilot preference and what your instructor recomends
