I'm Joseph Besch, I make paintings. I try to incorporate old recipes and techniques into my work. I'm making a few videos that take a look a some of these process's. However,
Disclamer:
these videos are mostly experiments, not necessarily the correct or easiest way to make paints. I'm documenting my own sometimes absurd processes. In other words, I don't consider these instructional, so please do homework if you're looking to attempt this stuff.

Linseed oil is the final ingredient that made the printing press viable; the water based inks that came before wouldn't attach to the moveable type
@@d36williams didn't realize that. Cool!
Sir, how long we need to heat the bone to make bone black
Which one absorbe more heat???
crazy;)
بارك الله بك جميل ولكن حسبت انك تبحث على علم الصنعه وهو استخراج الزئبق الاحمر الذي يحول الي معدن الى ذهب بعد اجراء عمليات التطير للمعادن ❤
Very interesting, what is it used for if I may ask.
Traditional color for painting. Used in illuminated manuscripts, roman frescoes, old master oil paintings, etc.
@@joebesch Can this be used as pigmentation for firing in ceramics?
@@bombasticborneo not sure if heating to that temp is a good idea. This stone is the source of mercury, and that might release some toxic stuff. But I don't know much about glazing.
Ok that was super cool but do you know that it’s straight mercury sulfide? Be careful with yourself dude💙
Love this video. I'm a Violinmaker and I now press my own flax oil. Everybody thinks it's overkill but it's really the only way to get top quality oil.
I feel the bone black is more matte, maybe lighter. Soot black is darker, and more glossy.
Agreed.
Ok checking back in a couple years
Yeah, I wish it could be more often, but between researching, filming, editing, and everything else... They just take a while to make.
Your channel's really cool! A shame you don't upload often, but do keep your videos up! I think it's invaluable knowledge you impart on people by documenting experiments like these
I wonder if you made a lye solution to dissolve the skins would of helped
Hmm. The trick is not to affect the nut inside.
Lovely to see your results back again, It’s priceless to observe all this formulas been developed In front of your eyes.. My most serious respect and Absolute appreciation “
Leonardo DiCaprio sure has a lot of of time on his hands.
Estou assistindo no Brasil, obrigada
Any plans to try Leonardo's method of separating and filtering the walnut oil using cotton wicks? I wonder whether some mucilage was removed that way.
Interesting. I attributed it to him getting the last bit of oil from the top. Worth looking into.
So very glad to see you back! :)
Always a master... thank you for doing that kind of thing. Now I really imagine taking the skin out is a really big problem
Huge problem, I put it off for years waiting for a good time to do it.
finally! he’s back!!!
Someone please give me name of online shop so that I can buy this red cinnebar powder 🙏🙏🙏
Great video thank you so much. Are you using a marble tile with the mueller? Where can I get one? Thank you!
Thanks. It is a slab of marble. I got it from a local countertop supplier, who often have scrap pieces.
This whole time I thought this video was for edible oil… I was so confused because a doctor said flax oil oxidises quickly so should be kept away from sunlight…. Due to supermarkets full of lying companies that sell fake oils, i was planning to make my own… I wonder if this process stands same for edible or cosmetic flax oil..
You could use the piteba machine to make flax oil and keep it refrigerated . But don't use the refining process, that's to keep it from rotting the painting or woodworking project.
I have smaller or more better than this, how can i sell it
I thought you was gonna short circuit 20V carbon rods inside a mixture of the red dust and tree coals!
does " 1 T marble dust" means 1 tablespoon?
Correct. T is tablespoon. t is teaspoon.
@@joebesch thanks. Have you ever tried to boil linseed oil with lime?
@@alexandrdementiev8750I'm not familiar with that one.
Well done, Joe. Excellent video. Thanks.
Thank you!
UAU!!!!
so awesome thank you!
Thank you!
how long should the bowl stay on the flame for the lamp black?
It builds up pretty quick. I left it maybe 20 minutes
@@joebesch Ok, thank you...
Just discovered your channel from this video, really cool stuff
Thank you
But your raw linseed oil is not deacidified right? In this way, the C18H34O2 in the oil will still cause excessive yellowing of the oil. The result of sun exposure is that the oil will not turn yellow temporarily. I don't know if my understanding is wrong, thank you to
I know this is the method of the old masters, I admire you

Beautiful work. Thank you.
Thank you so much!
Where did you find a mueller that large ?
I thought I got it from www.jerrysartarama.com/ But it doesn't look like they have anything that big anymore. But it is too big for my needs.
@@joebesch could you recommend an appropriate size for this application ? I want to grind bone black as well as Earth tones from locally harvested clays. Thank you for the great how to .
@@TheRedhawke that mueller is about 4" wide. One about half that size is a little more versatile when making about a tube of paint or so.
@@joebesch thank you so much. Looking forward to more great content from your channel. I’ve already subscribed and can’t wait to see what process you teach us next.
@@TheRedhawke thanks, I hopefully have a few more videos for later this year.
Damn i didn't know this was toxic it's everywhere in my village 🙄
brilliant but time consuming, well done
What is that grinder thing called in the beginning of the video?
piteba.com/en/shop-oil-press-nutcracker-sets-spare-parts-home-oil-production-fruit-press/1-piteba-oil-expeller-7435114797721.html
Piteba machine.
Hi wh
Great stuff!
Nice!!! TY!
How to die a painful death in five minutes 😂
shit i thought we will cook with that :)
I’ve used the same process to make char cloth. Didn’t know you could make bone black that way. Pretty cool. Two questions: What were you burning in the lamp and could you add the refined bone black to something like vaseline to make a body paint of sorts (I hunt in the snow and goggles are really annoying. Thinking I could try blacking the ares around my eyes to combat some of the glare.)?
I use just basic lamp oil. Mixing with Vaseline would probably work, but it might stain. Hard to wash off. The lamp black in particular is a very strong color and hard to wash off my hands.
@@joebesch Thanks.
We ust jused burned cork for blackening, maybe it could be mixed with makeup foundation so it doesn't come off too easily, , , real cork, not the rubber stoppers that are now in wine bottles Best of success
perfect, thank you for sharing with us. in some manuscripts : put a wet muslin in the bowl.
Honestly
This is pretty cool .I found a whole bucket full of that stuff around some prehispanic burial area. Very pretty ☺️
Hello, I have large quantities of cinnabar, how can I benefit from it?
@@loloqween2130 can i have some please?
What country? 🤔
Thank you for the education!
Hi, is this the same kind of oil I can use on wood furniture?
Yes! I am only a casual woodworker and not sure what differences between this and other woodworking oils.
Nice, but how can you refine an oil for 1 month which is not good anymore after 2 weeks? Linoids loss starting after 2 weeks already.
