Hi @roryscott1976 ... I am trying to figure out how your opponent made it to the finals. Maybe he blocks better than it appears... he doesn't do much damage on attacks... but maybe players miss a lot (like you did) trying to macho man crush kill on counter-attack... maybe he entices opponents to wildly attack when not quite set with leverage and timing... maybe he entices people to attack the serves and miss... maybe that day no one could read his serves (doubt that)... maybe the field was weak but I doubt it. Well, he made it to the final and damn what anyone would disrespect him HOW he got to the finals, it HAD to be SKILL.

@@DerEchteJ yes he looks easier than he is and gets a lot back. He has short pimples on his backhand which can be awkward. His side of the draw was weakened by the number 2 and 3 seeds pulling out as well.

Rory. It would help if you took control of rallies on the third ball. He always wanted to go loops til either u made a mistake or he hit through you. You have the game to put it on him. Just a suggestion

Yes perhaps I should have attacked more but I know I missed my attacks a few times and other times he blocked me off. I did get close by defending but probably could have picked off a couple more attacks per game.

@@roryscott1976 and @4k-ut8mg ... I mostly agree with Rory's assessment. Rory's 3rd ball winning percentage was near 50/50 it seemed. I feel Rory would have better chances on 4th ball with his FH if he was looking to do that vs this opponent. Rory looked secure to give the serve return kinda slow and easy long to his opponent's FH to get into a chopping rally that Rory feels more comfortable and confident. Maybe could have returned serve wide or at body and go 4th ball FH... but I wasn't there and Rory was... and Rory made the final and I didn't.

Some very nice rallies - very enjoyable to watch! Just one thing though - I don't think Sammy's serves are legal. It looks like he's standing at the side of the table 😕 For a serve to be legal, you must be standing behind the table! On another note, in the office my colleagues call me "The Punisher" 😉 I don't just win, I punish those I play 🤣I haven't had any formal training, just learnt how to play table tennis in the office. My technique is very unorthodox, but very effective.

Actually he’s allowed to stand around the side of the table when serving, as long as he contacts the ball behind the end line.

Ha ha yes that is funny. It’s like he’s surprised every time I hit it past him. 😊 He did play in the O75s English National Championships a couple of months ago and got to the last 16. I’m rated 20 in English O40s.

Yes well nearly! I’m 47 & he’s 76! He’s a useful player despite his age. After all he did get to the final and he also made the previous final, so I wouldn’t intentionally go easy. When I slacked off in the third game he won that game.

Hello Rory, I will be playing a hardbat player whom I be never beaten at an upcoming tournament. It seems I always miss my smashes against him, hitting long off the table with my inverted rubber. Do you think a flat kill rather than topspin kill would be better? Or I can twiddle to long pips ox and try a pseudo loop kill shot (which I haven’t attempted against him before) possibly? Any advice you can share would help, thanks!

Sounds like you’re overhitting due to there being less backspin on the hard bat shots. You’re better off going forwards over the ball. If it’s shoulder height or above do a flat kill/smash & if it’s lower then play a fast topspin kill.

My club is Horsham Spinners TTC and I run group coaching sessions on Mondays 5-7pm & Fridays 7-9pm at Northolmes Junior School, Leith View Road, Horsham, RH12 4EA. There is also a club in Horley Leisure Centre on Mondays I think 7.30-9.30pm.

You would not believe how easy is to place them in a very awkward position, since all the spin you give back to your oponent is the gunpowder a true canon can use and if you can't use the opening you're trying to create and itcomes to you even worse... You get the point 😅. Overall very nice, simple and comprehensive tutorial, BUT a lot to train just to get to that level.

What is the difference between a push and a chop block with respect to blade angle and stroke direction?

Good question. The bat angle and stroke direction can vary for both shots but the bat angle is generally closed for chop blocks and open for pushes. Chop blocks generally go down or sideways whereas pushes go forwards or can go sideways for sidespin pushes.

@@roryscott1976In which blade do you use it. For me both are excellent rubbers. The decision for using one or the other depends for me in which blade I use them. For faster blades I also prefer Hellfire. Do you try, by any chance, other long pips of Sauer and Tröger?
