I hope to bring you a practical demonstration of what can be achieved from a garden shed. I do not have access to a luxurious workshop, I am not minted with money and everything that I produce has been done with affordable wood and finishes. All of my tools are Christmas and birthday gifts, with the exception of a handful of old tools I bought on Facebook marketplace for £50.
I also practice watchmaking/repairing. Again, all done on a small budget for keeping my mind working.
Disclaimer. I am not a professional woodturner. In fact, I am a forensic dude who needs the therapy of woodturning and watchmaking. I am self taught, so I am unaware of the trade 'do's and don'ts', other than what appeals to commonsense!
If you copy my techniques, then please think about whether it is safe for your environment!
I am not sponsored by anyone, I use commonly available products and only mention them if it works for my turning purposes.
If you want to send me nice stuff, I would never say no!

“… bootleg…” 😂😂😂 I enjoy your humor! Nice little nightlight as well. I haven’t turned much resin and although I like what it can do for wood, IT’S MESSY!
Ha ha, thanks... I should have been drinking that stuff, not pouring over wood 🤣🤣 Yes, resin is messy alright, but I like how it can compliment wood nicely, when using the right colours. I did another resin project over a few weeks, but only filmed a few bits ... for some YT shorts. Hey ho, just chopped down a hawthorn tree, I have a few days of processing it now!
Guess I didn’t know it was broken…
I was just so happy, I had to share 😂
@@ClickandTurn how long has it been broken and what was wrong?
@@STMwoodturningit's a 'hobby' style bandsaw but wasn't very sure about it ....lack of power and 12tpi. I broke the blade. So did some research and bought a half inch 4tpi blade. Goodness me, what a difference. I was cutting 3" bowl blanks from sapele and oak the other day. I was so happy ,😄
@@ClickandTurn I run either a 3tpi or 4tpi on my small 10” Wen bandsaw. Makes a huge difference in the cutting!
Nice little bowl Paul. Sorry that you were “under the weather “ while making it. Hope you’re feeling better. Cheers, Stuart
Thank you Stuart, well ... I'm convinced it's my third run at COVID, so feeling rather pathetic 🤣 still, plenty to do in the lathe-cave to stop me getting bored!
Nice little bowl, Paul. Ask your dentist for a few used scalers (that's what they call them here). Very handy for getting into small spaces.
@@E-Glidethank you for the tip ....bas it happens, im at the dentist next month, I'll ask him 🙂👍
Thanks for sharing
That is a real piece art work. Lookin forward to watching more of your work.
Thank you for your kind comment ... I'll do my best to keep the standard up 😁
Probably sanding sealer fouling the sand paper rather than the grit. Great piece though. I often put old pieces back on the lathe to refine them but you need to oush yourself a little sometimes. Cheers, Dave
Thanks Dave. Indeed, I was a bit nervous about messing up the rim with the beads, but there was plenty of meat left on it to go again .... given a little more time 🙂. I did enjoy it and I have another lump of elm to push myself some more!
Thanks Allen, this is a beautiful piece of wood, for sure 👍
Every day is a school day! 😂❤
It certainly is my old fruit!! I hope you are doing ok, haven't spoken to you for ages!
Beautiful grain
Cool
Cute, thanks for sharing..
What a beautiful piece..
Thanks Allen, appreciate it 🙂
Nice to see someone from UK doing turning. Father in law gave me his lathe a couple of years ago and I love it . I'm in margate. I've made bowls, spinning tops ,baby rattles and other bits. Great to see someone in there shed making nice pieces.
Thank you my friend. Yep I do love turning wood into useful things.... I bet you do too! Keep it up and have fun 😁
Beautiful ❤ First time viewer and new subscriber. Audrey
Thank you, I really appreciate it. I am glad you like it 🙂👍
The word/phrase you were looking for at 2:45 was "OGee". Not to be confused with "Oh jeez" which is entirely different 😂
Ha ha, yes that's exactly the phrase, but my mind went blank and it totally escaped me!! As for Oh Jeez, I used that a lot when the Mrs says something needs fixing or decorating needs doing 🤣🤣
I always thought of turning it with a resin but you worked with it naturally which I like better. Nicely done 👍
Thank you ... I prefer the natural look too 👍🙂
Very nice 👍
Thank you 🙂
I've done a few bits with the Montana Granit spray and don't recall that nozzle blocking up. It can be a great effect.
Hi, thanks for the heads-up with Montana granite spray, I'll take a look .... That stuff I was using was really annoying! 🙄
Must give the ones i have gathering dust a go! Looks great!
For sure, they're fun ... But messy! 😀
Beautiful piece, thanks for sharing
Thanks Allen, I appreciate it very much. I still have a few big Banksia pods, I think I'm going to need to get creative 🤔🙂
Why use it for food, you can get a perfectly suitable ceramic bowl from anywhere, that won't spoil...it won't be a beautiful thing for long...
Thanks for the question... I am making these for the Viking battle of Lewes weekend. So, keeping it period was key, in as much reenactors won't want a ceramic bowl or a plastic one for that matter. I do believe, and this is my opinion, wooden bowls will last a lifetime, all they need is a scrub and some mineral oil every now and again. Give it a go and let me know if you like it ... It's not for everyone and I appreciate that 😉 👍
When your running in reverse you need to be extra careful of the bowl coming loose since the threads are trying to unscrew instead of tighten
Yes, indeed. Also tighten the set screw. Which I did, but the catch was a bit of a monster on this one 🤣
Nice
I think you need to listen for the sound of a chain saw and pick up some free wood for your turning projects. I have never bought wood but mostly turned green wood and stored the rough bowls for a couple of years to dry out. I can understand the need to buy if it is special but having a number of dried bowls ready to turn, finish and give as gifts has always been handy. BTW I am in Canada. Nice bowl you made too. Ash really is nice wood to turn. I never like turning reverse on a screwed on chuck without a set screw tightened onto the spindle for safety.
Hi, thank you for the comments 👍 Yes indeed, I have a fairly tuned ear to the noise off a chainsaw, I even own one. I live in a fairly urban town, so when storms hit, you'll find me out there in my mario cart of a car! I have a wee stick of 1st turned bowls, but storage is at a premium in my 8x6 foot shed 🙄 Yes, I always use the securing set screw when in reverse ... But recently the set screw gave out when I had a catch and partially damaged the thread on the headstock... Not doing that anymore! It's ok this time, I have a m33 tap and die, which cleaned up the mess . I was lucky this time around. Thanks for the kind comment about this bowl, much appreciated 👍
Nice
Thank you 😊
Nice results, Paul. 👍
Thank you, it was a little surprising how many cracks showed themselves. The wood was quite dry .. or so it seemed 😊
How did you make the chuck for doing the bowls? I have just started turning and find it fascinating
Sorry for the delay, Easter Sunday cooking and all that! I found a soft piece of spalted wood and turned a bowl size into it, but a little smaller than the bowl of the spoon ... Then pushed the top of the spoon into it, then used a small round nose scraper into it, until I got the depth of the spoon, the soft wood jam_chuck needs a little slot for the handle to go through .... Job done (pause the video at 8min 38secs) 👍😃
Nice work
Thanks my friend 👍
Nice Piece
Beautiful
Thank you Allen 👌
Nice work
Cheers, my friend 👍
Thanks for sharing.. Returning Support with Full View and Like.. Beautiful piece.. I hadn't got the nerve up to try any resin work.. Someday..
You'll be fine, it just so expensive though! 🙄
Looks like plane tree (platanus) to me.
Thank you... I am totally at a loss, but I will go with your suggestion, as it sounds like you have some experience 😁👌
Both look good to me. Hope they sell wel for you.
Thank you for that. I suppose that if they all looked the same it would be boring 🤔🤣
Nice
Nice work
Thanks Allen. You seen to be working your way through my little collection of videos... I truly appreciate your time and interest 👍
Nice work
Thank you sir 🙂👍

Nice work
Thank you 🙂
Interesting project, thanks for sharing
Dang, yes a color inversion would have been fortunate. Still a cool project. I bet you’re looking forward to being in the shop in warmer weather.
Ha, yes I am definitely looking forward to some sunnier weather! Though, when the sun shines through the doorway I boil to death.... Can't win either way 🤣🤣
Thanks for sharing.. Returning Support with Full View and Like.. Beautiful piece. I've never tried working with Resin. Maybe someday.. God Bless..
It takes some getting used to. Carbide tools seem like the answer which suits me. It can be quite expensive though, so start small 😊
Thanks for sharing.. Returning Support with Full View and Like.. Looks great. Quite a transformation. Hope you and your family are having a good week..
Thank you... This was an old bit of Oak I had laying around, turned out alright didn't it 😊 All's well in rainy old England, thank you. I hope it's a little dryer where you are!

This is so incredibly well crafted ❤it's so pretty its unreal 😢
Thanks Ava, I'm glad my number one fan approves 😁👍
It's a such a lovely piece of art work. Lots of us aspire to bringing forth such work. 😢 Me for one 😅 😊x
Thank you. Your artwork in paint is beyond my capabilities, so I guess we inspire each other 😁 x
Beautiful piece of work! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for your kind comment. Yes, I'm quite pleased with the way it turned out.
Man, that turned out so well. Super clean; but of a modern art aesthetic. Gotta be happy with that. Cracked up at the “if it floats, I’ll build a boat out if it” line. Cr
Cheers for that, it turned out alright didn't it. Yeah, the boat comment... 😂
Another fine production of the processes you use to make the bowl and apply the finish to the bowl. I appreciate the comments you gave for each step. That really gives me a much better understanding and encouragement to attempt bowl making myself. From the Blue Ridge mountains of north Georgia.
That's amazing my friend. I am so pleased that you're finding some of my vids of help to you. Awesome stuff 😁👍
