Songs of dreams gone sour The generation of Russians that flocked to these concerts in Moscow of rock stars of the 80s were the music-stricken youths of my generation. They were the best hope_____ and themselves most hopeful______ of the new Russian Republic's integration in the West once the Soviet Union got dissolved. Washington, though, had other ideas. So when the CIA took the hammer of 'Coloured Revolutions' to the Russian geography to break off more than a dozen territorial pieces into new 'sovereign' countries, from what these young Russians called their 'country', their dreams of becoming a new, 'westernised' Russia, quickly turned very, very sour. The 'breakaway republics', of Central Asia, Baltics, Ukraine, Georgia etc, though, got their 'freedom' and became sovereign states______ actually personal fiefs of the former local Soviet Czars_______ who quickly became the local despots. Some them have been ruling these new countries for several decades since with an iron hand tightened on the gullet of their people. I think had they tried, they could have negotiated the status of 'Sovereign Republics' within the new Russia but the conductors of the 'Coloured Revolutions' symphony wanted the world to hear the trumpets of the Soviet Empire breaking up as many times as it could. So we heard them blowing all thru the nineties. When it was over at last, the Russian Republic was locked out on its western and southern flanks from trade with the world by its breakaway, little states. They were like a solid prison wall, created under umbrella of Washington's full support and sustained by their hatred of the Soviet occupation of their homelands for decades. They also had (long) memories of cruel repression that only a colonial Empire can undertake on peoples that are ethnically different from the 'master' race having them under its subjugation. As a parting gift of their independence from Russia, they also had remnants of their loathed Empire to loath, the immigrated ethnic Russians in their midst. The new Russian Republic, broken to bits and practically landlocked on the west and south, meanwhile, went thru the horror of the nineties that eventually culminated into a near-famine of almost African severity and mass impoverishment at a scale they had not seen since the days prior to the Bolshevik Revolution. The breakaway republics fared no better but that was hardly a consolation to Russians. The rest of the world watched in silent horror as the entire region stretching from the former Soviet Union to the entire Eastern Europe looked set to become a new 'White Africa'. I myself, new to politics then, remember having predicted nothing but disaster for this whole region. But, then, a miracle happened. It began as a catastrophe of unimagined proportions; the 911. But the US turned that catastrophe into an opportunity for itself by invading, literally, the world at the turn of the century. For the next two decades, it kept the world engaged in wars against 'enemies' whose existence on earth has only been documented in anonymous websites, unauthenticated videos and 'delivered-to-media' film reels of, what it called, threat of terrorism to America, and the world. Nevertheless, the US invaded Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Libya and remained in full, or partial, occupation of these countries from 2001 to 2020, killing arguably millions, while internally and externally displacing tens of millions. The 'miraculous effect' of these wars on Russia and it's breakaway republics was the shortages and resultant high prices of energy, of oil and gas, their principle export to the world. These high prices, as high as $149 per barrel to an average of $ 80, sustained (with one brief interlude of low prices from 2015 to 2018) virtually all thru the first two decades of this century . So Russia, having world's largest oil & gas reserves, quickly rebuilt its economy to such robust health that even the stringiest sanctions since the Ukraine war have not hurt it much. The Central Asian republics, also rich in hydro carbons, have done the same and because of their miniscule populations, have amassed enough wealth to also create ivory towers of great opulence as a statement of their prosperity. The Baltics, and a lot many other countries from Eastern Europe that were a part of the former Iron Curtain found a saviour, and champion of their development thru trade, in the European Union. And most are already home and dry. The entire sordid story of the post Soviet Union era would have found a happy ending were it not for a country called Ukraine. The poorest country of all the breakaway Russian republics all thru it's accursed history since its independence, it went thru a roll call of most corrupt leaders in Europe, or may be the whole world, before it finally found its Winston Churchill, with a very Churchillian ambition; he wants to fight a war with the present Russian Hitler ''until the last Ukrainian man is alive''. And that, just to assert the very worthy ambition of being allowed to pay between 2 % to 3 % of his country's GDP to the US to join NATO, the American club of war mongers who have already destroyed Serbia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya and Somalia in the last 25 years. With his impassioned speeches for the holy cause of his nation being allowed it's birth right of being part of the NATO warriors, he has leaders of the US, UK, Canada, Australia and the entire European Union following him around the world like rats followed the Pied Piper to the sea. They are also contributing tens of billions of dollars of their people's money for his War Of The Sovereign Right To War. He has boarded up on buses a whole lot of his unconscriptable population, Old men, women & children and sent them to safe cities of Europe, conscripting all the rest, able-bodied young men, for the war against a former superpower that United States does not wish to engage in a direct war. Let's wish him, and all his supporters in this worthy cause, luck for many, many years to come.
