in Hungarian we'd say: "Azt a kurva!!!!!". which is quite vulgar (Hungarians are famous for being quite vulgar often). However, this phrase is equal with: OMG, Jesus Christ, Unbelievable, WTF? Please, understand me correctly..... This video is just awesome! The quality of the singer, the tonality, the understanding of Fauré, the SIMPLICITY, how he sang this piece - not overdoing/oversinging it - is just pure perfection! You see? We Hungarians can say nice words as well :-) But the "Azt a kurva" phrase is still valid. A nasty worded astonishment when you meet the greatest purity ever!!!! Huge congratulations!!!!!

In 2020, isolated, I discovered Paavo Jarvis, conducting Beethoven's symphonies, blew my mind. In bed with long term Covid at the time, your music was my saviour. Since, return time and again to your videos here at KZread. Simply sublime, played and conducted with a passion that touches the soul. Thank you indeed maestro!

Rimsky-Korsakov was probably right to tone down this piece of music, to be acceptable to the ears of the time. Mussorgsky was way ahead of his time.

I dislike this version a great deal compared to the version orchestrated by Rimsky Korsacov. Many of the notes in the original version seem to be out of place.

  • @oldfarthacks

Which is why Rimsky-Korsakov toned it down and shortened it. The people of that day, and in especial the royals would not have at all liked this version.

I feel it like a detective story that keeps your attention from the first to the last minute, like the tightrope walker's passage, which at any moment can fall from a great height. Thanks to Paavo Järvi and the director of the film who helped to percieve the magic of the piece of Maestro.

I am previewing this, because it's being performed this weekend at the L.A. Philharmonic Disney Hall as the opening work in a 3 set pgm which also features violinist Hilary Hahn & Barber's violin concerto, and Dvorak's 7th symphony.

Sounds like some film scoring for a suspenseful Hitchkock thriller where it's dark and someone is looking for something in unlit hallways, where at any moment a Psycho shower scream and knife scene could jump out at you.

Mussorgsky's original version hasn't needed rehabilitation for a long time anymore, but if it had been necessary, this recording would have done the trick. What a wonderful orchestra, under the leadership of a delightful conductor!

A true masterpiece of Arvo Part. From the beginning to the end, this is an extraordninary performance of an extraordninary orchestra. While the music is approaching its culmination, the motion of Paavo Järvi (and I really do not mean that in a negative way) culminates to a dance which is even more elegant than the dance of a crane bird. What a pity that not thousand times more people have seen this video and that it is not available on CD.

Compared with other performances of Mussorgsky's original version that I have heard, including Abbado's (Berlin Phil) and Valery Gergiev's, this rendition is more subdued and balanced in not allowing any section to overwhelm the other, which reflects Paavo Jarvi's mastery of the orchestra's ensemble playing. The result is a less wild or terrifying image of the demonic night of orgy on bald mountain. This may easily the most palatable rendition for those who would like to transition from Rimsky-Korsakov's well-structured, more cohesive arrangement back to Mussorgsky's original, sprawling, often messy, and less disciplined version. By the way, I noticed quite a few musicians smiled while playing, apparently showing their joy of playing this piece under Maestro Jarvi, just as I enjoyed their admirable performance and shared their delight. I thank all the players and Maestro Jarvi.

Marvelous! Such color and timbral variety in that spare-sounding orchestration. Bravo to all! 👏👏👏👏 That ending reminds me of Magnus Lindberg’s Clarinet Concerto and it’s ending.
