  The phone rang six or seven times. “Mildred, pick the damn thing up already!” I shouted once I got the rotgut down my gullet. I figured I could get lucky and land a new case. When she didn’t answer, I knew right then she had walked out on me, just like she said she would a hundred times. Yeah, this was about money. She had worked for me for more years than either of us could count, and I paid her when I could, which was not too often. She had seen me through more situations than I could remember, and that’s not counting the dames who had wrapped me around their fake diamond fingers or the ones I had to slap around. I took my feet off the desk, knocking over a pile of papers and the last half inch of Four Roses and went to the outer office. Yes, she was gone. On her desk were two notes. One was a note with her mother’s address in Toledo where I could send her last check, and the other simply said, “There are two guys who haven’t shaved in a week standing outside the door with their hands in their pockets. Good Luck, boyo.” You would have thought she would’ve given me a little more of a heads-up. Then again, it might have been Mildred who was calling. Guess I should answer my own phone.
