Do these guys know what they’re doing?
I’ve heard this before- great stories!
@@eppsteacher thanks buddy
Nice video. Swivels and swivel sockets are a must when working on outboards. And tools are only as good as the person using them
@@brianpung9693 I agree, the tools do not make the mechanic. Appreciate your comments
It’s awesome you have so many friends to help. Also that looks like a lot of work, I kept thinking, how does he remember how to put it all together?
@@CakeAdventures lots of labels, and this video to refer back to when putting back together. But most of all Gods favor
HI- Im a 45 year boater. Im comfortable with 2 stroke 70 hp and less. Winterizing,Impeller, Carbs and Pumps are typically no prob. New to me is a 0201-200 Optimax DFI. I'm just a bit concerned about the compressor maintainance? Could you do an Air compressor maintainance and Priming video?
@@danconn2065 hey Dan, I believe that requires the mercury tool and software. I can borrow one but let me look into that, thanks for reaching out
😂😂😂 the conversation and jokes between you and John, aka LMJ just flowed with you working on the motor. Awesome! Then he finally jumped in and helped 😅
I think it's great that you, "keep us waiting" for what's to come in future episodes. Great video, Keith!
Your content is getting better and better. Thank you keith (outboard dad).
@@MarketingForChristians thanks buddy, appreciate your wisdom and guidance.
So proud of you Bro ❤
Thanks Alice!
Does the water pump use salt water?
Yes, when your in the ocean or the bay, on a lake it’s fresh lake water
Invite some guys over to help out
Stay tuned
Is that a sardine in that can? Or tuna?
Liva lips fish
@@OutboardDad Don't make me come ovah deh!
🤦
Thank you for your comment, anything I can help you with on your boat?
good vid and description. you really "get into" your work. lol. my observation....if i understand you, the rusted cylinder is #4 (2nd on stbd), but water marks on all. engine gotta come out. i wouldnt worry about pulling manifolds or heads unless you think that would make it easier to pull engine. sure, they need to come off, but why not do it in the open where you have room to work? :) just my $0.02
lol, you read my mind, I am at the limit on my engine hoist to get this out so hoping to lighten the load. Also to have more info for Hector on the damage.
@@OutboardDad yeah, you really don't want that hoist to fail in the middle of the lift! also, pull the elbows off the risers and you can better explain the need for inspection and replacement of exhaust parts. that will help explain why they are considered maintenance items. :)
Check to see if you're in neutral it could be the lower unit seized up and not the motor
Thanks, we found bad risers that were leaking water into the cylinders. Going to pull the heads next and get a better visual on the cylinders
Thank you, very well done.
Your welcome, let me know what you want to see next
Can you please post longer videos that show more of the process of you fixing boat engines.
Thank you for that, I can, I was thinking of a total rebuild of a 1995 Evinrude 150. Remove the block , bore and hone , is that what you’re looking for?
I have a 24 year old bass boat that is completely solid and looks great however the carpet needs to be replaced. Do you have any videos or anything on doing that
Not at this time, sorry, thanks for asking. Most of my experience has been salt water boating so my rebuilds have fiberglass deck
Going on 54 years as an outboard mechanic and repair shop owner. I was service manager for Stratos and a half dozen other brands in central Florida when FICHT came out. I see below a few hinting at these being bad. THEY ARE CORRECT. These ARE the engines that bankrupted OMC. They are just a bad design and there will be a reason these have not run on a few years. It is not about available parts. It is about the fact that 9 out of ten blew up before their first ten hours of running. We even had them blow when first run after rigging them at the shop and our guys were some of the best in the business. OMC actually ended up sending a semi truck load of a hundred powerheads to be set to just swap them when they blew. These are NOT worth buying at any price. Now if you want something worthy , buy the older cross flow Johnson and Evinrudes for this type of boat. THOSE will last you forever if you maintain them even a little bit. If you can afford the etec, these are fantastic engines but you have to do your maintenance and if you change from xd 50 or xd100 two cycle oil you HAVE to tell the EMM that you did so, if not you burn them up. (yes, there is that much of a difference in the way the oils work). Tell the EMM if you go with a good tcw3 and it will be happy. It doubles the amount of lubrication to keep you going. Anyway, a few other things here but for the most part he was ok in what he did. Transom does need reinforced or replaced. All in all, a pair of 200 Johnson cross flow engines and you have something that will last you for decades more yet not break the bank like a pair of new fourstrokes would (60,000 dollars)...
Thank you for that detailed feedback. This information is key to helping people have a better boating experience. I had 2 different crossflow motors over the years on boats and all ran well past 20 yrs when I sold them and I believe proper maintenance and the right oils are keys to that success. Your experience is valued , where are you located? Can we do a zoom call and record it as a follow up to this video that I can share ? Will definitely share this with the boat owner before he invests.
Have to agree, they also took too long to recognize and take care of issues and tried to cover them up. What do you believe was the main design flaw that caused these issues?
Awesome, Keith! Great video by the water, which is so appropriate for your content 🙌😀. This was such a cool and relaxing interview with your friend, Bill.
if a boat breaks down it can be dangerous. this is me
Agreed! Thanks for the comments, have to be prepared for anything
This is very powerful. Excellent video man. I get so frustrated with people for acting so pathetic about getting their hands dirty. My girlfriend is terrified of changing her oil because "i'm going to screw it up". Absolutely ridiculous. Meanwhile, ive been building a racecar for 12 years.
Yeah man, where are you located? Can we do a zoom call together?
A good mechanic isn’t just a good parts swapper. They need to be good at diagnosis. And that’s a lot of the cost. If you understand how your machines work then it’s that much easier to diagnose. Understanding theory of operation is first step of becoming a good technician. Not only did I hate the thought of paying someone so much money working on my things, I hated that it had to sit in the yard until they had time to look at it. I’d rather it sit in my yard and that way I can figure it out.
Yes, yes, Yes! You’re speaking my language. Where are you located Phil! Would love to do a zoom call with you
@@OutboardDad Savannah, GA.
Would love to do a zoom interview one day if your up for it
@@OutboardDad yeah sure. Not sure how much I can contribute. Just a guy who works on his own stuff. Not a professional or in the industry.
Thats how I started, lets talk when you have time 908-812-0133
That looks like a relaxing setting. You have been working on boats for quite some time.
Thanks Melissa, part 2 on its way in 2 days! Let’s see I am hopeful that the styles of videos will get more views
I just watch these videos for fun but this boat looks so enticing. I feel like I'm experiencing a great day at the shore with this boat!
Boats this well maintained are hard to come by. If you like bay boating in the shallows this is the boat for you! Let me know and we can schedule a sea trial!
that engine looks well cared for!
It has been! The owner has had his family on it but now kids are older and do not use as much. Mostly just him and his wife so he is downsizing. Let me know when we can do a sea trial with you!
Love how you are incorporating different aspects of boat ownership. All the way from possibly buying, to fixing, then to selling.
Thank you, more to come!
Another awesome video, Keith! Funny, I was thinking that you would also be great as an interviewer. Not just in regards to boats, but other topics, but I know, (as Pastor says) "Go deep before you go wide." LOL! With every video, you are more comfortable and sometimes I forget that I'm watching a video. Yay Keith! May the Lord continue to bless the work of your hands and see the motive of your heart!! Blessings! :-)
Thanks so much Sherine! I have a few interviews in the next upcoming videos so stay tuned! Appreciate your taking the time to follow and encourage me!
@@OutboardDad yay! Will be on the lookout for them 😃. Awe, you're welcome, Keith. That's what brothers and sisters in Christ are supposed to do! Encourage one another while it is still day 😀

Thanks buddy, if you know anyone with a boat for sale or sitting for years let me know
Very true fear stops a lot of people from lots of things.
Agreed, I will be posting another video soon, stay tuned
My antiventilatiion plate is missing a piece on the back for my 1991 two stroke 225 Yamaha outboard. Do you have any ideas on how to fix it, perhaps with Jb weld?
Good morning and thank you for your question, yes JB is one way and will last 5-10 yrs. You would need to find a piece of aluminum to cut and fit into the broken area, then grind away any paint or corrosion, the JB it in. Sand it smooth , fill any low spots after drying with more JB. Make sure you prime with an etching primer first so it has a better chance of not corroding. Over time it will break down when moisture gets in but it will get you back on the water! In the mean time, if you like this boat it’s a good idea to start looking for a used blown motor for parts. Please email me if needed [email protected] send pics of what your working on and put OutboardDad in the subject
Sorry I thought you question said anticavitation, anti ventilation? Please email me some pics
Awesome. I'll be a regular viewer
Thank you, let me know ow what your boating issues are so I can help!
Nice Part 1 video...the adventure continues
Thank you, let’s get together and do a video about your boating experience.
Best 2 days of my life, day I got my boat and the day I sold my boat!
That’s a shame what happened?
@@OutboardDadit's a famous saying. You've never heard it? It's about The cost and work involved in having a boat
Yes but these can be overcome, that’s what my channel is all about. I got my first boat at 18 and ran it for 22 yrs learning from experts on proper maintenance and repairs on my own
@@OutboardDad Me too! I have been running small outboards (3.9 merc/'74 Johnson 4 hp/Honda 5hp)) on Avon Dinghies since I was 8 yrs old. I learned engine rebulding from an ex ,naval commander. At 16 we bought a Whaler style boat with an '89 Evinrude 70 VRO. I ran that for 32 years before we sold it with a marine engine ABYC survey ''Near Like New" condition, and upgraded to our Optimax 200DFI. Most of the Maintainence is simple and easy on all of these engines. Learn to do the servicing and you will save thousands! Mechanics should be for the big jobs, or trouble shooting the real problems.
@@danconn2065 I agree Dan, would love to talk with you [email protected]
glad I found this channel, funny I don't own an outboard if only you also worked on inboards, lol
I did work on them as well over the years, just not as much. Let me know what your working on and I will help in any way I can
Hi Keith and Bill. LOL. Great the motor started running again! 🎶"Get your motor runnin'" 🎶 Great "short" Keith. I think the silence and your email at the end gives a bit of mystery and would make someone want to inquire! 👍😀
Thank you Sherine!
That’s ox 66 was the motor that made Yamaha famous
Yes, many of these motors loose the lower cylinder and very few people understand why
Sell it asap very few of these motors were good parts are scarce I was a full time omc mechanic when these motors came out they probably put omc out of business sad to say
Have to agree, they also took too long to recognize and take care of issues and tried to cover them up. What do you believe was the main design flaw that caused these issues?
@@OutboardDad the charging system didn’t cool and lack of oxygen sensor caused improper fuel mixture causing the spark plugs to foul in about 20 hours
Interesting how some lasted and some tricks people learned to get as many hours as they could out of them. Thank you for the feedback
i am 74 and hired a mechanic once in 1971. I never owned a car newer than 1972. I always bought cheap cars, and about 30 years ago bought a pick up worth fixing, a 1952 chevy pick up, because when repairs cost more than another beater i would buy another car. and so i bought a pick up that was worth fixing. I bought a fishing boat on the coast in 2011 with a detroit diesel. It was a WW2 navy captains gig built in 1942. I drove it up the coast and crossed the bar of the columbia river and to my home in Portland. I made a couple of trips down the oregon coast, and while coming home noticed that my fuel consumption increased by a third. The engine has three cylinders and i could only rev the engine to two thirds the rpm. i knew i could not afford to get a diesel mechanic down to the marina so i started to take the engine apart. It was just worn out. It is amazing just how much technical knowledge can be found on youtube. i could find a video on every operation i had to do on that engine, also these sorts of engines can be rebuilt where they sit, with replacable sleeves and everything. i sent the head out to be rebuilt and replaced the cylinders pistons and all that and was amazed how well the rebuild went. it was the first diesel i ever worked on. but it gave me so much confidence when i was out on the water and i enjoyed the experience so much. It cost me 3000 dollars in the end to fix it counting oil and everything . also along the way found a few mechanics who didn't mind wasting their time on the phone, to talk to me, also along the way, people gave me a couple of excellent service and training manuals. I wish there were more guys that liked working on their cars. i remember when i was a kid more folks did this, but i guess with all the new electronic stuff in engines it gets to be just too complicated . my brother passed away in 2015 and i got his 92 dodge van. i have had a few challenges with it but have a big service manual . presently it is not working and i am trying to figure out it's issues, i have the 52 chevy to drive while i figure out this new issue. but i am sure i will figure out this at my leisure. love your video. i know several boaters that are terrified of break downs, and just love it when a boater calls me and needs rescue out on the river. I love to tow boats and help other boaters. I don't understand why every body doesn't have a boat and enjoy life on the river. Every day is a good day on the river.
your comments are spot on, I recently changed out the spark plugs, indexing the new ones, also replaced the water pump impeller on an Evinrude Etec. Labor rates at a dealership are high, I have learned to complete simple maintenance for myself.
Thank you! Please let me know how I can help. So glad you are doing your own repair and safely. [email protected]

Thanks Melissa, he has decided to sell it and use the money to buy the boat he wants. Will be difficult to sell with a bad transom. I would not be suprised if he end up not selling and doing the repairs so it’s a solid boat to sell
