Tony Fleming ( founder of Fleming Yachts ) completely lost one anchor on his Fleming 65 Venture from a similar incident down on the California Coast. That is WITH a professional Captain at the helm. His video of the event is "Venture visits the Channel Islands" and can be found on the Fleming Yachts channel here on KZread.

Glad it turned out alright. Seems like you took the right lessons from the experience. A working search light would have helped, for sure. Radar, too. Not clear why Navionics saved you from the second rock but not the first. The time to turn it on and set an anchor alarm would have been when the wind first piped up (if it wasn’t already on). Surprised to hear about the poor holding in Refuge Cove. It’s marked on the chart as a designated anchorage, although the nature of the seabed is oddly not shown. Letting out more scope when first starting to drag might have helped - or not. Maybe you tried that. Getting oriented to lights on shore as soon as night falls is always a good practice. There aren’t many in that cove, but you were in sight of the docks. Again, you probably did all that. Anyway, all’s well that ends well, eh?

Yep! Had driven all night coming out of Washington. It was back in the '70s and I was headed for CO for a gig there. I was dog tired looking for a place to pull over and had no idea where I was except for knowledge there was a lake and some mountains around there. Was driving one of those Hippie Vans, a converted cargo van all fixed up inside. Man-O-Man when I woke up was parked on the water's edge staring up at the most beautiful snow capped mountain range. I was totally blown away, no drink or drug could've gotten me higher. When I caught up with my mates no one believed I could've found such a beautiful place. I had to be exaggerating, they said. All I'd gotten from the locals was that I was in the Swan Valley of was near the Swan Range. The only way they finally believed me was when got the pictures developed. Now I lived in the Colorado Rockies and drove all up and down the Rockies, the Sierras and the Cascades and to this day I ain't ever found no place can compare to that Swan Valley, no sir!

If this is all so challenging you need to get a better tailwheel instructor. It’s really not that hard after you are taught then right techniques. I had a M-5 235 for a few years in Alaska. I wouldn’t trade it for the 185 I eventually had. Good luck with everything.
