Right so hello. I’m Katie Lumsden and I like books and things. (Things including: history, theatre, the Victorian period, bookshops and writing.) I've been watching Booktube videos for years and in June 2015 decided to start making my own.
A typical video will include me drinking tea while overusing the words 'like', 'really' and 'brilliant' to declare my undying love for Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. Feel free to subscribe if that sounds like your kind of thing.
I am also an author, and my debut novel, The Secrets of Hartwood Hall, came out in spring 2023. My second novel, The Trouble with Mrs Montgomery Hurst, is coming out summer 2024.
Review policy: I'm happy to receive review copies from publishers, especially of historical fiction. In general, I don't review self-published books. Please contact me at my email below.

I love videos like this, especially when the channels are linked. Thanks so much!
I'm hooked! Can't wait to get my copy.
I know you didn't like it, but you've sold me on the Language Puzzle
it was also interesting from the point of view of AI safety, where there is a bizarre failure mode wrt the Cootings Machine. the emergence of (better, mainstream) LLMs since Ishiguro wrote the book seems prescient given Klara's thought process
Absolutely amazing! You've nailed the narrative voice. I'm so invested already. Can't wait to finally read the whole thing in July!
Oh golly I really struggled with this book. I have loved all of the books so far and literally whizzed through them - but this - it was just so hard to keep my mind on it. At one stage I had to go away and read another book! Maybe I should have given up and gone over to the audiobook version! I’m so far behind on the readathon now lol. But I read Great Expectations and Our Mutual Friend before the readathon started so that gives me a bit more leeway!
I forgot about Jane Austen July and filmed my TBR!! I am so participating!! I will film another video with my updated TBR along with it! I cannot believe I forgot this!
Wow, Katie! This was an engaging start of a book, I loved it! I didn't know exactly what to expect because I still haven't read your first book (though it's on my list), and I was carried away by the narrator and the dialogues. I had the cell phone near me and I mostly listened, and you know what, I saw the places and the people... it formed images in my mind while you read (not a full movie, more like flashes of images), and this is such a pleasure. I'm gonna buy the book and read it for sure! Congratulations!
What an exciting thing it is to be reading the first chapter of your second book! Heartfelt congratulations and I’ll be looking forward to the release in the United States. ❤️
Thanks for sharing the first chapter...can't wait to read the rest!
Ooh, intriguing! Even more excited for the release now 😎
Thank you for reading the tantalizing 1st chapter! I'm looking forward to reading the rest! Wonderful beginning! 💫
Thank you so much for tagging me Katie! I really cannot wait to do this one! It seems like so much fun to film. I'm also super jealous of your unlimited renewals at the library. Ours has two renewals only, and no renewals if someone is waiting.
I'm really hoping that your new book will be published in the US soon! 🤞
Congratulations !
Congratulations on the novel Katie!! I can't wait to get my hands on both your novels and finally give them a read when the second one comes out. I can't wait!
I thoroughly enjoyed your debut novel, and am eagerly anticipating ordering this one!
Excellent! I finished Dr. Wortle’s School this afternoon. I am not sure what I will read next.
Oh Katie! It's BRILLIANT! I adore it more than I thought possible already (and I find literature doubly hard to absorb and enjoy while on audiobook and while sick). I can't wait for my copy to arrive. I might have to cut Jane Austen July reading short if it arrives before August.
I love it! Thank you Katie.
Such a project!!
Loved your description of Tomorrow x3 ! That book had such a profound impact on me, an all-time favourite for sure!🥹🫶📚
Coincidentally, I had it on my list to buy Mrs Montgomery Hurst today, what a beautiful suprise! I am so excited to read it!
I WANT MORE!!! Oh Katie, what delicious news! I so enjoyed your first novel and will be one of the first in line for your second. Since I live in the US, I imagine I will have to order it from the UK. Do you know when it will be released here in the States? Even if I already own it, I will seek out your book in the local stores and share photos with you again!!! 😍
Thank you for this first chapter! I can't wait to read the rest of the story, I'll probably listen to it on audiobook, as I did with your first one 😃.
Well done! Both the writing and reading. Great cliffhanger. I can’t wait for the full story in July!
Yay for new books! Ahh yay for getting all the names given and I really hope you love it <3 I have been meaning to read sappho for years as well so I will be curious to know whatyou think of that little black classic in particular. Such a stunning edition of the picture of dorian gray. I read it recently and loved it. I love the moonstone as well and the folio edition is gorgeous!!
WOW, Katie! This isn't just a novel, I can see this as a movie or series. I imagine all the times you must have LOL'd while you were writing this. It's HILARIOUS--the descriptions, the dialogue. I can't wait for the rest! 🙂
OMG!!! YAAAAAAAAAAY!!! I am writing this before you even read, so I will post another comment after to feed the Algo gods. But I'm SO EXCITED!!!
Ooo! Intriguing!
So Good!! I can't wait to get my copy and find out what all happens. And to study the map! 🫖
I kept asking other readers if I’d like Tomorrow Tomorrow and Tomorrow even tho I haven’t no interest in gaming. They all said yes. So I read it last year. I agree with you. It’s a fantastic read!
Brilliant! Thanks for sharing.
Well written and read!👏
Wonderful, Katie! This is delightful! Congratulations on the publication of your second novel. I’m looking forward to reading it.
It’s really interesting to hear about other people’s reading habits and experiences. Thanks for sharing! I also don’t have a ton of visual imagination, and now I’m wondering if it impacts my reading speed. As someone who also reads a decent variety of things, I also get what you’re saying about wanting to read everything, and I agree it helps with preventing reading slumps 😅
Thx Kate; looking forward to reading it this Summer.
Congratulations, dear. I wish to have it in South Africa, too.
That was amazing, thank you for reading the first chapter , looking forward to when it is out, and reading it
I loved your first book and I’m so excited to read this one!
You're a good reader. Do yolou read the audiobook version as well?
Congratulations and all the best on your second book! :) I bought your first book last year and can't wait to buy the next one!
ohhh i am excited for the new book!!...i am reading the Secret of Hartwood Hall now...i really loving it...i don' t get much sleep because i keep reading it haha
Congrats on 9 years! Just joined your discord!
Hi Katie! Loved this and would love to watch an updated video please 🙏🏼 currently listening to David Copperfield and it is so brilliantly narrated!
I do follow your channel and occasionally comment, and I know you love 'Our Mutual Friend', and they have been doing a play with songs by P J Harvey at the National called 'London Tide' which is based on the novel. I watched it yesterday, it only focuses on the two central plots, but I really enjoyed it. It finishes next week though.
I love this book, I have to reread a lot of scenes a few times before letting them go. I've read a lot of classics, and I think romance in North&South is the best of all I've ever read. I will read it again, many times.
That was really interesting Thank you. As a visual reader it never crossed my mind that not everyone is!
Thanks for the tag Katie
