“Unable to except it I shine the light down from Cressida’s gun down the shaft. Far below I can just make out Finnick struggling as three mutts tear at him. As one yanks its head for the death bite, Something bizarre happens. It's as if I'm Finnick, watching images of my life flash by. The mast of a boat, a silver parachute, Mags laughing, a pink sky, Beetee's trident, Annie in her wedding dress, waves breaking over rocks. Then it's over.” -Mockingjay (The hunger games)

If that’s her normal prose I shudder at the thought of what her steamy scenes must sound like.

I used to work at a Christian school! Sometimes it’s harder. And I absolutely agree that if something is not resonating with your students, it’s better to move on, than to kill a love for reading. I was made to read Frindle, and I hated it. But it might’ve been because I was made to read it, instead of choosing to😂

Yes! I enjoyed the backstory the book provided, as obviously the movie didn’t have time to fully go into it - but I thought both were well done and thought provoking!

I agree with you, I remember some required reading when I was in high school and I avoid those books now 😂, so I can understand that you want them to learn the subject matter, but you also want them to be lifelong readers. If it wasn’t for one teacher when I was a kid helping me with my reading difficulties, I doubt I would be the reader that I am today. I do want to push myself to read more of the classic literature, and I haven’t read any of the books you mentioned. I might be able to listen to it on audio. I just recently bought the secret garden, because I’ve never read it and I liked the movie. I remember hating Ernest Hemingway when I was in high school 😂.

Ugh!!! Hemingway! I just can’t! 🤣 “The Great Gatsby” is a ‘gateway classic’ that I recommend to people - since it is pretty fast paced (after the first chapter). I think teachers definitely put too much stock in teaching the classics, which can also cause students to question whether there is any value in reading non-classics! Thanks so much for watching! ❤️❤️

Colleen Hoover has a tendency to focus on trauma as the focal point of the story. I read her books years ago before she got TikTok famous, and now I don’t touch her books. She definitely is overrated as a writer. I also don’t consider her to be a romance writer, even though I constantly see her in the romance section 🙄.

100% I just finished Verity thinking that I would enjoy it more, as thrillers are more my vibe. But - no… you’re right about the trauma centered plot. Perhaps that’s what has drawn people in. However, it leaves me feeling “ick” (for lack of a more sophisticated way to express that thought! 🤣)

True! I just read Verity over the weekend, and my opinion holds true based on these 2 books. Is there another one you recommend that has more elevated writing, more likeable characters, and fewer “steamy” scenes? 🤷‍♀️ I’m open to recommendations! 🥰

I can't do real life at all. That's why I love fantasy (even dark fantasty)! Harry Potter...it is just nostalgic...it is in the bottom of the top 30 or 40 of fantasy, and it is YA...so not really fantasy haha.
