  Some don't put their music on Spotify because they know that unless they have several hours a day and a decent sized budget for promo their music will get buried. Spotify and the major record labels are joined at the hip and both want to make as much money as possible thus promote via the important playlists only 1 to 5% of the artists on there. It's estimated that 80% of the people who have music on Spotify make less than $200 per year off of streams. Who knows how money and time they put into getting that small amount of streams. My guess is at best they end up even but most probably loose money. Even if you go real basic like with Distrokid's $20/year fee you would have to get a minimum of 5,000 streams to make that back. More likely 10,000 because of where your music might stream (.004 cents per stream in the U.S. vs .0001 per stream in India for example) and just how the pot might get split up at that given moment. Some might think that number doesn't sound so high but again if you're on a tight budget or no budget and you work a full time non music job, trying to find time to promote to get that many streams per week or even per day, which is what you would need to do to even make a part time living from your recorded music is a tall order. I speak from experience.

  For anyone who's considering doing this, do not just blindly put ur money into random playlists with high follower counts. It's a complete gamble. A majority of those playlists that sell spots are fake and use bot followers. Use a legit promotion service like *BritishPanel* *Net* .

  Depends what you want to do. For instagram I use instabot-py. For twitter there is some browser based software for like $30 a year. Soundcloud there is a couple of paid options, but they're all over $100. I'm seriously thinking of building my own proprietary bot.
