Throughly enjoyed this discussion. As Marilyn’s piano technician and friend, she’s very much missed with her passing. I’m happy to see her and hear her again share her thoughts on piano teaching and performing

It's brilliant advice Chris! I was home alone now, just me and my inner critic and I was able to shut her up and sillily play the tin whistle😄😄

Sincerely from my heart thank you I tell myself everyday don't give up so I'm 55 I started playing the piano around 14 I would start and stop I love Mozart and Herbie Hancock well since I didn't play the piano like my favorite pianist I became a DJ and then I begin to sing in the church choir and wrote a few songs they weren't bad but I would always like to live vicariously through artist instead of consistently practicing. Now that I'm older and I don't think that I need to drink or smoke marijuana to be creative. Sober For the last 10 years. This past year I've been practicing my piano at least 15 minutes a day no matter how I feel and I'm actually getting a lot better! I'm sticking with C major C minor arpeggios and chords of each note of the scale and I'm learning The Twilight Zone Theme. I'm having fun thank you for the encouragement. I will definitely add the suggested curriculum to my practice repertoire❤ thanks again

    Audiations, not auditions

I find this so encouraging. I have noticed that communication about music can be quite abstract and tortuously described, when it could be so much more easily communicated by singing. So many musicians are reluctant to sing, probably based upon irrelevant notions of not having a 'nice' voice, but they should as it is so immediate and gets to the heart of what they are saying. My auditions have become more to the point with awareness of what they can do - like compose, or focus on aspects I hear. The freedom to just use memory or imagination to trigger a musical action or reaction that is my own.

I'm a music student always interested in learning new methods. I believe my music teacher has taught me things such as deliberate practice and spaced repetition. I believe I may already know the things you teach in the "Super learning" method. Is there any way I can check to see what you truly teach here?

Pentatonics are great! On the accordion, I'm teaching students the following: Left hand (bass), play A - G - F - E slowly; like 4 beats each. That's an easy pattern to learn. Then on the right hand, play the notes of the A minor pentatonic (A - C - D - E - G - A), in any order, one note per beat. It sounds awesome! And it's amazing the variations that are available. If you then add in the Eb "blue" note to the pentatonic, it gets even better....

I agree w/ Zac here. In the 17th century, a musician who aspired to full-time music performance and instruction had to learn how to read music and follow it well. We built a whole industry at that time (though small, I admit) that became conservatories and so on. Over time, we promulgated methods to prepare musicians into that mode of capability. Still today, there are pockets of musical instruction that drive this thinking, that continue to prepare strong sight-reading artists who can't actually make music. I'm pleased this way of teaching and learning music is going away, by and large.

Do you think if you have learned a piece of music to approximately 80% and you do not intend performing it, you could move on whilst working on the previous piece in the background? I have tried this and it does seem to help over time.

The most inspiring advice I've heard about music playing! Indeed, striving for perfection takes all the fun away from playing. I now play for my enjoyment and not for others, so there's no worries about making mistakes anymore.

The relative pitch and building blocks idea helped me to join the dots. Like you I had learned instructions on scales major, minor, augmented, diminished etc but I drowned in letter names and although I understood it theoretically I couldn't make it work practically. For example all my solos were uninspiring to put it mildly. But when I thought of the function of the I, IV and V suddenly doors opened in my mind.
