Why take the time to add that piece to the speed square? You can just use the speed square as a guide without it.

With smaller bits (i.e. 1/2 dovetail) the fence assembly can cover the lift screw. One might rotate the lift assembly 180 degrees and make a new hole for the crank in front.

Put a spring on your hole saw pilot bit - the tension from the spring will push your plug out of the bit. You can make knobs like that out of acrylic the same way. Drill slowly and don’t use a punch, though.
