It's interesting to see how many phrases in the NORAD dialogue match scenes from the early 80s 'First Strike' documentary (which were also used in The Day After). References to BMEWS, "Missile Warning reports no malfunction", "Confidence is high", "targets in track" and "emergency conference" seem to all be taken from those scenes. Those documentary scenes were probably the only publically available sources of information at the time about the nuclear defence procedures, so it looks like they relied on it quite heavily. Even the console operator reading a book seems to be a direct reference! First Strike is here if anyone is curious, it starts to get tense at around 940: kzread.info/dash/bejne/e4BkqKdvlpTVabQ.html

To me this was the most horrible scene in the film. That poor guy getting mangled by the engine and screaming. You expect horrible things in the combat scenes, but this reminds you that machinery spaces on ships are dangerous places when you screw up. Steam pressure is no joke.

Live action Popeye? I've mixed with these types. If this was story accurate it would have ended with, "and that's how Lenny lost his life in a caravan fire." Absolute steaming pile, much like this scene.

This movie is a great example of optimism vs pessimism, courage, and hope for survival. I put this movie on my top 15 list of all-time favorites. Everyone performed their best. The movie should have won at least three Academy Awards if not more.
