@5:30 - For anyone who's not experienced it, that scratchy sound isn't so much a noise as a vibration in your chest cavity. It must be at something like resonant frequency for some of your bones, because it's not comfortable. I was enormously privileged to see the vulcan displaying not long after it was taken off active service. Only a child, I regret to say that I hated it! The sensation, not the sight. Oh, but to experience it again!

I was on the top of Scarborough Castle Hill that day. I remember spotting Vulcan coming in over Cayton Bay and it was absolutely silent. Then as it turned parallel to the beach, the deafening noise hit us and all we could hear when it passed was every car alarm going off. After the display, I went down to the seafront and had a great chat with Martin Withers (the chief pilot). I presume it was Kev Rumens flying that day. How can something designed to kill millions of people be so utterly graceful and almost beautiful?

I bet the Royal Air Force wish they had something like this now in 1980. We had 18 frontline fighter squadrons now we’re lucky if we’ve got six like all of the military arm services UK government for the last 23 years has slowly, but surely run them down to a point where we are now incapable of defending ourselves 19. Warships is a joke, doesn’t matter how capable they are, the bottom line is that it’s only 19 we just have the biggest navy in the world in 1980. We had 59 warships which included two carriers. It’s an absolute abomination what the Conservatives and Labour Party have done to our services and the Conservative party are singularly responsible, because of the garbage that Maggie Thatcher forced on the British public by destroying the national health service with the trust system That never actually came into operation the internal market yet if you were to go through the national health service you’ll find the originally all the extra management is still there and still walking about a bit of paper trying to prove that they required this government and many other government since Margaret Thatcher has been completely and utterly cowardly in grasping the nettle and reorganising the national health service so it makes more sense and getting rid of the management that is not required vote reform
