Black Label woodworks

Black Label woodworks

A journey into wood turning.

Are you part of a woodturning club? I do interactive remote demos through Zoom on many topics. Visit my website for details on my demos and A schedule of pay per seat demos that I have open to the public.

There are risks involved with woodturning. My videos are only for entertainment purposes. If your not familiar with the turning techniques I use consult with an experienced instructor or mentor. Always use appropriate eye, face, and lung protection while woodturning.

    I think it would look better if you sanded the top while it was on the latheand then sprayed it with finish.

    You should try rounding your blank with a 5/8” bowl gouge! So much faster than the srg!!

    Thank you for describing your processes. And no annoying background music as you merrily turn away. . Did you plan to apply finish to the inside ? Your forster bit needs sharpening . It should be peeling curly shavings not micro bits , and how do you plan to remove the nub of the tenon from the bottom? Jamb chuck , pin jaws ? Relieve the bottom edge just slightly ? I heard you tick the chuck jaws just slightly , might want to touch up the gouge , and hone your other tools there was a lot of fine tear out that you sanded off that a pass with your skew, or a shear cut from a half inch Irish bowl gouge could smooth off first . I measure the depth of planned interiors and then wrap a bit of blue masking tape on the shank of drilling bit , leaving an allowance for the lead spur or tip of twist drill . You did not mention what wood that you were using . Spallted yellow birch , apple ? Overall a nice video

    Have you ever tried this with black walnut? I know that black walnut likes to crack when it dries out so is this a trait that does not allow you to turn green walnut?

    That's not a thing branch. As big as my hand but good woodworking. Like that your telling us what gouges to use, most wood turning insee just uses the gouges but never says what they are.

    I don't tend to make boxes... but want to add them to my product line. I work with mostly all green wood. What you do here is what I do with bowl blanks. Good to know the process is the same. (Oh... I always brown bag the bowls, write the date and what's inside)

    Something this size I start off at around 1000 rpms until its round then up 1500 - 2000 rpms. If its bigger then 4 inches I would start off a little slower.

    Hi Appreciate information and education your videos provide. My lathe can only turn up to15” diameter, thus I won’t be turning large/heavy pieces. On the Fugal Vacumn pump and chuck system is there a limit, size, weight that you have used? Thank you.

  • @BlackLabelwoodworks
    @BlackLabelwoodworks2 ай бұрын

    Vacuum chucks are great for light cuts to clean up bottoms of bowls or sanding small things. Skinny long turnings it will not hold well. As long as you have a chuck sized for the turning they work for things wider then long. Always use tailstock support for most of the turning with vacuum chucks.

    @@BlackLabelwoodworks Thank you for all your help. I may look into a support system to hold longer pieces. I agree always provide support, take no chances.

    Well to start with this guy is over explaining like crazy, when I was 12 my shop teacher said half as much, the bowl blank was easily near 10” and he was going to make a 6” bowl, extreme waste , and hand holding a divider to mark a mortice ? The bowl is running out of true while he's doing the mortice that means the bowl wasn't secure on the worm screw( it happens but just leave it, no need to correct a few thou when you flip it, but it's unsecured on the screw) And that's just off the top of my head and I am an amateur. This guy has no business instructing anyone
