Three times a year, JR offer cut-rate Bullet train deals exclusively for the elderly who have signed up for JR membership. So the average age of passengers during the five-day periods of the offer is around 75. The Tohoku leg takes you all the way to Hakodate in Hokkaido. Essentially there are no Bullet trains in Hokkaido. So after that you have to take the regular JR trains to Sapporo, Otaru and beyond, which are included in the deal. Japan has become the hot destination for western visitors, largely because of favourable exchange rates. No rainy season in Hokkaido so this may well be a factor. Because of the recent influx of foreign tourists combined with domestic tourists, hotels in Otaru tend to get heavily booked, so parasite booking outfits like Agoda and Expedia indulge in price gouging. But persevere and providing you factor in some lead time, it is possible to score a reasonably-priced room. Bur be aware that hotels in Japan tend to charge per person rather than by the room, but this is changing. The Nikka Whisky tour tends to be over booked, too. Amazing video and wonderful breakdown on costs of both the pass and the car! This is great information! 25 km per litre of gas? sounds abit far fetched... Plus if driving in snow, it is even more tricky, and also dangerous if one is not a good driver. Then there is the slower than usual pace due to the slippery snow, and additional stress of driving in the snow. There seems to be a bus service to Lake Shikotsu, especially during their snow festival. I'm planning a trip to Hokkaido next winter, so the infromation shared in this video is surely important. Thank you!!!

I am Thai and you are 100% right on spot on the negative sides. Many Thais also have been complaining the same things you mentioned. For example, about the taxis; they prefer foreigners than Thais because they can charge more. They deny us Thais almost 100% around tourist’s spots because they know they have to go by the meter. We try to make sidewalks more presentable for pedestrians but the way Thai live and eat with street foods..well it will take quite awhile to change. And I don’t even start talking about scooters on the sidewalk or running the opposite way of the incoming cars yet. Traffic after 5pm is terrible almost everywhere you go. And when there is rain, you can multiply that traffic by 10.
