Fish along with Ian Sands of Sands in the Surf on beautiful Oak Island, NC. We’re fishing the surf and surrounding areas targeting everything from puffer, to blues, to black and red drum, to sharpnose and bonnetheads.
Sands in the Surf videos will show you which fish are running each month. You''ll see which baits work for which fish as well as the different rigs and lures. We'll answer questions such as where is the best place to fish and what you should look for when fishing Oak Island. Along with surf fishing, we'll take kayak trips and fish the Davis Canal and see what's biting in the ICW.

I’m at the beach access at 730w beach drive. Maybe that isn’t a favorable spot
@@jaredrotenberry7263 should be a good spot but with all the rain and storms makes fishing the surf difficult. All my trips this week were scheduled and then rescheduled. Uggh
You provide so much knowledge. I just can’t seem to put it all together. Keep the videos coming and I’ll keep watching. Rough conditions but I have completely struck out this week
@@jaredrotenberry7263 its not you, it’s been a tough week with all the storms and rain. Lots of seaweed, dirty fresh (not salt) water mixing makes it hard.
You can cut squid into strips, pat them dry, and cover in salt for a week or so. I store in a fridge but you don’t have to keep cold while fishing. Easy go to bait that still catches fish!
@@brettbutler6151 Good tip, thanks. Though I’m not sure how happy my wife would be with me if I kept squid in the fridge for a week 😅
ive never gotten a ribbon from the surf!
That's just how Surf fishing goes at times. I'm a High Tide surf fisherman, but i will fish the low tides also. Like they say, A bad day of fishing beats the heck out of a good day at work any ol' time catching em or not, you just can't be in a better place and the scenery is God's gift to us and we should thank him for it and please pick up your trash and put them in the trash cans located most of the time as you come in to go on to the beach. Thanks guy for your tips that will help mostly beginners who really don't know or could be using the wrong baits or let's just say equipment. 😊
What local shop near OKI would you recommend to buy a rod/reel/rig/hooks?
there are several good shops but you can't go wrong with Dutchman's Creek. They have everything you need and the staff is great! Tell them I sent you ;)
Hey Ian! Appreciate you taking the time to speak with me at the sandbar that day. So cool that you included us on the video! So cool! Hope to see you again soon.
I’m here at oak island now. Fishing now and fished yesterday morning. Haven’t even gotten a bite so far. Would love to meet you and maybe get some help catching a fish
@@jaredrotenberry7263 I’ve got boat tours this week but should have off Friday if your around.
@@SandsintheSurf yes I will still be here
Hey Steve! Ive been watching your videos on my drive down to oak island from Maryland. I’ll be on the island for a week and would love to go surf fishing with you let me know if you would be interested!
Oak island has no good wings period. If you think they do you don't have any credit.
@@TheLongHaul00 it’s sort of like NC doesn’t have good pizza or bagels but we deal with the hand we are dealt ;)
Thanks Capt. for reposting this video. BTW, I like spot and croakers because I make Ceviche. Sincerely, Marcelino Albuerne, MD aka Doctor Flavor
Me and the family just came down to OKI and i was wondering if you could tell me the best bait shop for live shrimp i haven't had luck. Also if you had any good public spots besides in the surf. Any advice would be appreciated! Love the content!
@@jaydnloving5884 Clems usually has live shrimp. Dutchman’s Creek also has live bait. Usually fiddlers, shrimp and minnow but it’s best to call and check cause they can sell out quickly. I like the Southport Pier. It’s free and there is lots of structure. I don’t like too many of the public spots on OKI like Veterans Park for example cause all I ever catch is croaker. There is a dock at 6th street west, Davis Canal, that I like at high tide.
@@SandsintheSurf thank you I really appreciate the information keep up the great work! Love the videos
Is a 10/0 hook to big for sharks or should I bump down to 5/0?
@@the_mythical_manatee1245 I use a 5/0 hook for smaller sharks in the 3 to 4 foot range. A 10/0 sounds really big but I guess if I were fishing for bigger sharks…
@@SandsintheSurf thank you! And i noticed in your videos you occasionally land sharks without wire, should i use wire or just the usual mono liter?
@@the_mythical_manatee1245 if I’m targeting sharks, I use American fishing wire. Sometime I catch the when I’m not trying :)
@@SandsintheSurf I noticed the American wire, but I couldn’t find any of that where I am right now, so I got some eagle claw single drop steel wire rigs. Do you think that is strong enough?
@@the_mythical_manatee1245 I’ve never used it but there is only one way to find out ;)
I'm not big on wings. My take on 49th Street after our one trip there is the menu was pretty limited. How did the others rank.
Thanks bro
Great video. You’ll have to include Pepperoni Grill next time. My favorite wings so far on OKI.
Ian, Tara is going to have to give you commission. Two sets of customers came in and mentioned the video. Thats just the ones i heard. Good job and i agree with your assessment. Try the hot asian next time.

you need to rank from 1 to 5 best to last!
@@larrykempton2092 we actually did but the camera ran out of battery before we were finished. Shagger Jacks scored a 31, Tipsy Tuna and 49th tied at 33, Paul’s received a score of 43, and Tranquil was number one with a score of 50.
Adding to that, The runner up scores, Paul’s was number 1 in flavor and heat. Tipsy was runner up in texture (crispy outside/juicy inside), and Shagger Jacks was number 1 in meat (meat to bone ratio)

The Moose Lodge has great wings. I always picked them over the old Chasers. I’ve never had Tranquil Harbor wings. Great video!!
@@capefearalive we also thought about adding Moes which is supposed to have great wings, though technically not on the island. We might need a part two! :)

What a fun video! Way to mix it up Ian.

Because of your video on them a few years ago every time I go to tranquil harbor I get your wings even though I don’t love spicy food
I think you nailed it. Tranquil Harbor is our favorite wing. But always loved Chasers too. We have been to Tipsy Tuna since they opened but have not had the wings yet. Which sauce did you get at TT?
@@johnb7802 we ordered the poolside? I think that’s what they were called. But we think we got half bbq and half buffalo. They were solid wings
We took our boat down 7/2. Was gonna troll, but it was too windy and choppy. Stayed around Dutchman creek. Caught several croakers and one shark. Tried to use your method of putting our bait to the off side of creeks on a falling tide. As I said, we caught croakers but no black drum. We'll give it another shot next time we come down. Thanks for the vids!🤘🏻
@@ShockWaveOffroad those croakers can be relentless.
Best video in a while. Back to basics.
Which are the best beach accesses for fishing around mid August?
The structure is always changing due to the weather so it’s hard to say. However, I do like the surf up around 70th street.
@@SandsintheSurf Thanks. If I see you around I’ll say hey.
We down here at 64th St. Today... plenty of sharks and croakers. Storm yesterday really helped bring the water temp down.
I find once I get into a school of croaker, I might as well leave. Seems like once they start they just keep coming.
Hi Ian, you mentioned Drones are illegal? I can’t find any reference to that on NC Wildlife web page
There was a post they put out on Facebook last year. Basically you’re not allowed to hunt of fish using a drone. I don’t consider dropping bait fishing but apparently NC does.
I will be down in 3 weeks. Catching and releasing flounder on the pier. Where else should I go that’s not a hot spot?
If you’ve never fished the Southport pier, you might want to check it out. It’s free and there is lots of structure around it. That area is particularly good for flounder
Just don't cast out too far on tge east side of the pier. A really big snag there. Probably part of the old skip cannon battery position. @SandsintheSurf
Super helpful! Subscribed!
Thanks :)
3-4oz is def the perfect weight, i thought they changed they law back with the drone dropping?, i have yet to get ghost shrimp . need to make me a pump

Great info for any fisherman, can't wait to see what you do with the salt water streamers on your fly rod, I've had lots of luck over the years in the water ways with my fly rod..thanks for what you do
Thanks I’m excited to try them out. Probably be later towards the fall if I can toss them towards some drum, blues, or trout.
Always great content.
Hi there, I was wondering why people around SC/NC used this rig with an anchor line and hook line separately? Why not use a single rig? I'm from Texas, and we use a similar rig for bull reds, but just one big fishing pole, main line to leader line (80+lbs mono/fluoro), T off for a hook with swivel while the main leader ends with a spider weight at the end. The only difference I see is that your rig allows the fish to swim around without the weight behind, but really only toward or away from where the anchor line is, and not really deeper or to the side (meaning, if I can cast it with my bull red rig far enough.. what's the difference). Also, does this rig hold the fish well? My concern is that the swivel can cut through the anchor line. Thanks!
I can’t speak for people fishing the pier. The advantage I see from my perspective, a surf fisherman, I can cast an anchor weight (actually now I use a heavy Sputnik) really far. I could never cast a live fish as far. Not even half as far. So for me, I can sail the weight, then let the fish do the work.
I recently fished the outer banks of N.C with my nephews. We caught several keeper sized whitening. My niece was so helpful by catching several sand fleas! I tried to catch a big bluefish but it didn't happen.
What a great overview! Thanks
I’ll be in Oak Island all next week, never done much surf fishing but I’m gonna give it a try while the kids play. Sounds like You recommend Double drop Pompano rigs with sand fleas? What about fresh shrimp? Helpful video!
Was out today using sandfleas and fresh shrimp. Both were working well with the whiting. Having caught any pompano yet.
I’ll be down at Oak Island with the family next week. I’ve watched a ton of your videos for ideas and intel. I really only fly fish, so wish you’d do some more fly fishing videos. Have you given it any more practice?
This fall, when the bait is running, I’m gonna give it another try. I’m thinking I’ll be able to target blues and trout then.
@@SandsintheSurf I didn’t have much luck last year. I’ll be down tomorrow until next Saturday and gonna give it another go. Last time I tried a lot of small minnow type flies in the surf. I may spend more time with big topwater poppers this time and see if I can’t get anything that way. We were staying closer to the point last year so caught the one I did get there. This year we are close to the pier
Your sir just earned a sub 🙏
Thank you very much!
In Oak island today were can me and my wife fish and have a chance at a good catch
The challenge this time of year is swimmers. So if you want to fish all day you might just go to a pier. Try to get some live bait before you go. Or since high tide is around 3:30, you might try to point or Caswell. Might just have to walk a little to get away from where most people will be.
@@SandsintheSurf thanks for the tip I own a place there will be sure to reach out ahead of time for tips… still have yet to fish the surf
