  • @LevenParker

    @cristianefimov3611 I wouldn't trust it myself.those self adhesive books are often acidic and could well leach acid through the mounts and damage the stamps. Good question!

    At the end of the day the guy got his deck of cards and the seller made a profit. It’s more on the buyer to understand what they’re buying, but who’s to say for sure that the deck isn’t worth more now that more people know they exist. Markets for collectibles change daily.

    I lived in California when I was very young. One of our neighbors was an engineer who came from New England at the turn of the 20th century and was far into his 80's. he investigated old mines and checked them for possible reopening or feasibility. in some of the old offices he found cabinets full of old letters and took some that were interesting including a few pony express letters. Alas when my parents were trying to help the old couple and got them a housekeeper she stole a drawer full of the letters he had saved from years b4. She was prosecuted for that as well as other items she stole. The letters i have no idea what happened to them.

    @@LevenParker Not at all. France is, according to the LGBTQIA+ sources, one of the very few countries where we have true equal rights. However, the rise of nationalism worldwide (Putin, Trump, Orban, Erdogan, Meloni.. and maybe on 7/7, Le Pen in France), there is a sensible rise of homophobia. I have lived 15 years of my life in California, got married in 2016 to my American husband, but since we moved to France, I don't see more or less discrimination than in the US. Please, feel free to stay in touch! I have a few missing Artcraft FDCs in my 1939-1950 US collection! If you are looking for French stamps or FDCs, I will be happy to help you! Stamp collecting is far from dead yet as there are still many thousands of keen collectors across the world. But I have been collecting stamps for many years and have a large collection now which I have spent a lot of money on. But it would definitely sell for a lot less money than I paid for it. Some countries on which I specialised in such as France and Germany have become very unfashionable in the UK and a valuable collection of France worth £5000 10 years ago would struggle to fetch even £2000 now. Modern post WWII Germany fares even worse with an unmounted mint almost complete collection of Berlin costing me £1500 at auction 10 years ago now struggling to fetch even £300. British Commonwealth countries have fared better but even GB stamps have suffered in the UK with classic stamps selling for half the price they did 10 years ago. So the hobby is certainly waning as more and more quality material is entering the market every day from deceased collectors with excellent collections but the number of new collectors coming through to replace them is far less. Supply and demand will trigger falling prices inevitably but it will be patchy, as favoured areas will attract more interest so their prices may still increase in the short term whilst less favourable areas will fall more quickly than would be expected.

    Actually the value of a collection depends on the dealer/collector you are selling it to. The 30% of face value really is valid for mid to large sized dealers who likely have an overabundance of stamps from the 1940's onward. However, since over the past 30 or so years this has been realized by many collectors or they soon do when going to a large dealer, you will get face value or slightly above face value with individual collectors or sales platforms such as ebay. From my own experience I have been able to sell common modern definitives a little above face value. How? Usually it is back-of-book stamps such as Non-Profits and Presorted or coil formats of common definitives (especially if that is the only format the USPS produced them such as the 1, 2 and 3 cent fruit coils of recent years). Panes and sheets of modern stamps are harder to sell unless it is from a plate that was short-lived or a sheet with uncommon features (two examples are the 50 stamp sheets issued in the 1980's through early 90's before USPS ceased that format, and the commemorative sheets without die-cuts after the USPS finishing selling an issue online). Also, I am seeing that topical stamp collecting is growing tremendously so say a series of stamps with tropical birds with complete denominations from a country may sell at a premium rather than a mixed bag of stamps covering a wide variety of topics and themes. So your statement of 30% of face value while valid is limited. However, it is best that you give the very low end figure of what you'll get. As many stamp collectors learn from experience, you end up with many duplicates for postage, trading, or selling at a discount when the time comes to liquidate some or all of your collection.

    Hi, Leven, I enjoyed watching this video. I collect the countries of Scandinavia, particularly Denmark, but also Sweden, Finland and Iceland. I have a fairly good collection of Sweden, and a while ago decided to buy a catalogue for the Scandinavian countries that was better than Scott's so I bought a Facit catalogue. It only goes up to 2002 but it's an excellent reference for the earlier material where, because of cruder printing methods and less quality control, there is a lot more scope for varieties and it has far better listings than Scott. As for the rare watermarked variety listed in Scott as 189A, Facit lists it as 179cx. And, whereas Scott prices it at $4750, Facit does not give a price, just an asterisk which means that the stamp is known to them but a price cannot be determined. Also, whereas for most issues, Facit lists production numbers, they don't give a number for this issue, and so your conjecture that a sheet or two were inadvertently printed on the wrong paper is probably correct. Incidentally, the number given for the vertically perforated coil is 163 million. so even if there were 100 of the 189A printed, there's still less than a one in a million chance that any random copy is the rare one. Now I'm going to go check my 20 ore King Gustav stamp for watermarks!

  • @LevenParker
    @LevenParkerАй бұрын

    That is so cool. I have never used the Facit catalog but I have heard it is excellent. Let me know if one of yours turns out to be a rarity and thanks for watching
