    What I need to know about is how to add pockets! I'm curious if you have experimented with adding any to your leggings? Would you just sew them on directly to the pattern as is or would you want to cut the fabric on the outer part of your legs and create a gusset down the whole leg to be able to add pockets like I see in most modern construction?

    So, it's a year later. How much have you used this form? How is it holding up to pinning (there were folks with concerns about the foam deteriorating)? Pros/cons now that you have experience?

  • @Atheeni
    @Atheeni15 күн бұрын

    It's holding up great! I use it for draping quite a bit and no issues with pins etc. only thing I would change is to make the cover out of something that isn't velvety. While the stretch velvet looks pretty it's a little too grippy if I'm using tape to transfer shapes and pulling non slippery fabrics over it is a bit annoying. Otherwise it's held up super well. I've even had it fall over a couple of times while I bumped into it. Only thing that broke was my upcycled stand for it lol. The actual form was fine.

    looks very nice, but wont the padding and cover material add to the girth measurements, making your clothes a bit loose?

  • @Atheeni
    @Atheeni22 күн бұрын

    Yup, but only a few millimeters. When you draft clothing patterns you usually introduce what's called wearing ease to your clothes anyways. For wovens it's usually a positive ease to make them looser, for knits it's often negative ease to make them tighter so for the purpose of draping and pattern drafting it doesn't really matter in the end. Plus bodies change size with time of day, food, hydration, etc. so a few mm really isn't much of an impact.

    Is there a particular reason to use paper tape as opposed to another type of tape?

  • @Atheeni
    @Atheeni22 күн бұрын

    Most other tapes will stretch and will require stuffing to hold form. Paper tape turns into super stiff cardboard after a few layers and can withstand a lot of pressure or tape. You're welcome to use other tapes, it's just more work because you need to fill them somehow after to hold shape.

    It's actually way lighter than an equivalent wig made from plastic hair because yarn has a lot of loft and poof so it takes a lot less material to make it big and fluffy. I've never actually weighed it though lol.

    I love your tutorial and I’m using it to make a wig for my Jinx costume from Arcane and I’m wondering approximately how wide are your wefts and how many of them did you make? I feel like the weft making process is going to take months. I’ve been at it for 2 days and only have 9 wefts so far, not even glueing yet 😂 I just want to know if I’m aiming for like 30 or like 130?

  • @Atheeni
    @Atheeni22 күн бұрын

    Ooo ya Jinx would be perfect for that! My wefts were about 25cm? I think? I just eyeballed them tbh. And I didn't make too many because the yarn is so poofy that you only need a little of it. I think maybe I made like 20 of the long 25cm wefts and then cut them into smaller chunks to glue. It was definitely a see as you go process so I just kept adding until I was done because I wasn't sure how much I needed.

    As this video is 6 years old I would be surprised if you see this, but I love this idea! I do have a question for you...what do you think about afterword filling the head form with the foam spray that hardens to increase it's stability?

  • @p11_studios

    I was thinking the same thing, but I’d just be concerned that it causes the form to deform

  • @Atheeni
    @Atheeni22 күн бұрын

    You can if you want but the layers of paper tape make it super sturdy so you don't really need to fill it. Honestly 4-6 layers of that tape and it's rock solid lol. If you fill it with expanding foam just do it a little at a time and spray with water to speed up the reaction.

    I've got a question: the front and back rise depth are normally 1/3 and 2/3. I've got that. What if the belly of a person is larger than her bottom? Like if I want to draft a pattern for a pregnant woman, or one with a large fupa? Would I move the 1/3 and 2/3 towards 1/2 and 1/2, or would I take a complete crotch measurement from waistline back to waistline front and rise the front waistline point on the pattern?

  • @Atheeni
    @Atheeni22 күн бұрын

    Hmmm that's tricky. I think if it's for a pregnant lady I think you're probably ok with leaving the rise depth ratios as is and just extending the rise to be longer so there's more fabric to cover the belly protrusion. The rise depth balance is more if you have extra body fat really low in your belly or if you're drafting for a male. If it's just a bigger belly or a pregnant belly the extra space is usually taken up higher on the body so adding to the overall rise should cover it.

    Hi! This is the process I use to make my own wigs although instead of gluing wefts i sewed each individual strand into a wig cap. Your process would save SO much time omg. I was also wondering how you wash these wigs? I usually let it soak in lukewarm water and fabric softener, but it makes untangling them an absolute nightmare. Do you have any suggestions, as well as advice on styling? I'm scared that using hairspray like I do on my bought wigs will ruin them

  • @Atheeni
    @Atheeni22 күн бұрын

    This will wash the same as a regular synthetic wig. Just some soapy water and soaking then ring it out and hang to dry. Also totally don't worry about using hairspray, or styling gel on wigs, it comes out with warm water.

    Hi, you are so creative. This is the most accurate looking self made dress form I’ve seen on KZread so far and I’ve seen a LOT! I don’t know how to use all the software you used to get your pattern but it’s a fantastic idea if you don’t want it 3d printed on hard plastic. To cover the rough parts, have you heard or used Fosshape? It’s a fabric that seems to be pretty forgiving, you sew it up a bit like you did to make your velvet cover (beautiful by the way) and then use steam or a heat gun to shrink it around the dress form. It hardens up but is completely pinable. It might be a good way to smooth out the bumps, Congrats again on a great outcome

  • @Atheeni

    Ooo yup I've heard of fosshape, it's awesome. I was on a really tight budget for this thing so just opted to go with cheap materials and what I had on hand but fosshape would definitely be useful.

    I’m somewhat confused. Waist line is parallel to the ground, and one leg of the carpenter’s square is parallel to the ground, so you’re essentially measuring two opposite sides of a rectangle. How would the front rise be different than the back rise?

  • @Atheeni
    @Atheeni3 ай бұрын

    Yup that's true, the difference is basically if you end up lowering the level of the parallel leg of the square lower up in the back because you want the leggings to sit up lower up in your bum if that makes sense? From a mathematical standpoint you're totally right though :3 The trick here is trying to figure out how to accommodate a little extra space for your bum if you're a bit more curvy. Some folks will have the measurements be the same, some will have a bit more because the bum.sits a bit lower than the front pelvis if that makes sense.

  • @Atheeni

    I'm not actually sure if the tags are correct because it's only half the standard yardage width but I do have two pieces that are fairly large remnants. I'm really hoping there's enough for a pleated skirt because I really have my heart set on making a skirt out of it. And ya the variety was interesting. I think the breakdown was roughly 40% worsted crepes of varying weights and colours and then 40% suiting of varying weights and blends and then 20% miscellaneous bits but most of those seemed natural materials too.

  • @friedmule5403
    @friedmule54033 ай бұрын

    Not sure if this trick is usable at all but if your fabric can get loose threads, then can you get a special plastic glue (do not know the name) and glue the edge, then after it is dry, heat the edge with a soldering iron, this will end up invisible but lock the threads on the edge and prevent it from ever getting loose, and it is invisible, instead of having to sew.
