It is unfortunate that the linguistic capabilities at my disposal do not encompass the Czech language. My aspiration is to possess the proficiency to compose text in Czech, which would enable a more robust exchange of idea, thereby facilitating a more profound and nuanced discourse on the work.

Tak špatně bych to neviděla, ale v něčem souhlasím. Přijde mně to trochu moc rytmické. Vyniká ostrý rytmus dechových nástrojů a není tam dost plynulé legato.

Vltava may have been the one that gets the most individual play, but I have always, from the first time I heard the set, been extremely partial to Vyšehrad. Such an atmospheric and beautiful piece of music. Castles, knights, bards, what is not to love about it?

There are no bards in this piece, at least not in the Celtic sense 🙂 The Czech territory was inhabited by Celts, including bards, 2.000 years ago, but Smetana didn´t include that motif here.

This performance, or performance of CPO conducted by Vaclav Neumann or Jiří Bělhlávek are better. To say true, Kubelik was known as emigrant from formerly communist era, which gave him some gloriola and becaus this his conducting was cosidered as something exceptional. And no, I am not deaf, only know probably more rendition of My vlast than you ever heard.

@@kanady43 That performance in the Municipal House by Rafael Kubelík with Václav Havel is not technically the best, but it has a certain je-ne-sais-quoi and describes the Czech countryside best IMO. It´s the least rhythmical one, there are some wonderfully flowing legatos that paint the picture of the water and the rolling hills. I can see the countryside in it, while with other recordings - even though they´re more exciting, have better contrasts in the tempos, have a more thorough interpretation of Blaník etc. - I can´t see it. Perhaps this is where the disagreements come from.

After falling in love with this work when I was about twenty, I have spent four decades being bitterly disappointed with every recording I could buy. Sad, isn't it?! Until I heard this performance at the Proms. It is STAGGERING. The Bamberg Symphony setting a superb standard of playing throughout, both technically and musically. So often this set of works is overly crude and bombastic in performance, but here, not only is it exciting (the massacre at the end of Sarka should have you trembling) it is the fine detailing, the exquisite balancing of the orchestral writing, and the spacing of the music that really stands this performance out as something very special indeed. The more one listens carefully to what can be the two "problem" movements, Tabor and Blanik, the more one realises the innate understanding, and thought, that must have gone into Hrusa's interpretation. I'm not often moved to tears, but this performance brings home to one the super-human achievement of the deaf Smetana, living in terrible circumstances. So far, I have not been dry eyed by the end of this magnificent performance. Surely surely it is an all time great.

It is wonderful that you can hear all those nuances and historical moments in the music... That is why I think that a talented Czech conductor will always do the best job at interpreting this masterpiece, and I totally understand your search for a decent record. (I have heard a few by foreign conductors & orechestras and I agree it was just off.) This one is beautiful, I can confirm. Just for comparison, you may want to search for the same piece conducted by Rafael Kubelík in Japan, it's on KZread as well, beautiful quality (for that time anyway:)) and musical gem. And Jakub Hrůša is no worse which is an amazing achievement. Enjoy! :))
