How many times can she say "inequality"? The term is used to infer a judgment - typically negative. However, "Red" and "Green" are factuallly different - but equal as they are both colors. Since she is so focused on the idea of "inequality", she is probably unable to recognize the difference between the negative "inequality" and the factual "difference" So yes, if she teaches - from an "inequality" focus, she is teaching a judgmental indoctrination ...and should be let go.

Arguing that 'Foucauldian Studies' isn't indoctrination is quite a challenge. It's literally the doctrine of one man.

This speech would be laughable if it wasn't laced with outright Evil! If the land is actually stolen then GIVE IT BACK, but I suspect she doesn't really believe it's stolen. I suspect she's just empty virtue signaling for appearance sake not for real substantial reasons. Oh, and her "notion of Free Speech" comment scares the Hell out of me! I personally think Free Speech is a fantastic "notion." One thing I've noticed in life the more liberal a person is the more likely they hate Free Speech. There you go...

LOL - She asserts that using CRT texts is enough to present balanced curricula because the CRT texts offer a critique of traditional race scholarship, that's like asking person A what person B thinks. She also claims that her sense that students don't change their views is evidence that the courses are not indoctrination - as if indoctrination has to be successful for it to be indoctrination. She dismisses a student critique as "a sign of the times." Having taken social justice/equity courses, what I noticed is that these professors aren't reading outside their ideology - they have no clue that there are other ideas out there because they dismiss anything that doesn't fit their worldview as racist.

The fact that this is a required course implies that it is indoctrination. Otherwise why would the university require all students be taught about social justice? Also, does the speaker not know that Canada's law schools are hotbeds of social justice activism?

This is important work, decolonization is imperative. I get it, a lot of people in the comments were/are fans of the band she played with as a teenager, and hell i was too, tough i got into much heavier and weirder stuff later, but still look fondly at my childhood memories and sounds. However, this person is all grown up now and doing wonderful work as a Native historian and anthropologist, which is something the academy needs much more of. Indegenous scholarship done by indigenous people is imperative in preserving culture while letting people tell their own stories themselves. Celebrity worship culture has us idolizing someone for the role their music has had in our own pleasure receptors and memory building experiences, which is fair subjectively; but the work this dedicated scholar is actively doing to help decolonize the academy and emphasize the agency and cultural relevance of First Nations Peoples shouldn't be overshadowed by her past as a teenage rockstar. This is in no means seeking to throw shade at the hard work done by her former bandmates up to this day and the impressive trajectory they've had with their music. But we should be able to respect people's work as the work of human beings and not demigods, whether they enjoy fame or not; and most importantly, allow those who don't care for that fame to enjoy their private lives doing what they find most important and contributing to this world in a way that is most meaningful to them. Either way, great work, the colonized world needs more of this, and will recommend checking out other videos in this series to those interested.

Good lord. Like most Kittie fans here. I play bass because of Talena. We were kids who appreciated her crestivity and talent. We haven't heard ANYTHING from her in about 2 decades. She is Dr. Atfield now. We are here to celebrate and support her. If not for her rock career myself and many other viewers would have never clicked on a conversation like this and I am indigenous! Your comment is hilariously white savior. Dr. Atfield deserves appreciation for all of her hard work. She follows her passions and thats a great example.

@@paulsmith8510 sorry if my comment came across as pandering to fans, it was not meant as such and more of a ramble, i do that a lot. I'm not white, have indigenous background (south american indigenous) and have done scholarly work in indigeneity myself as an adult, and had the Spit album and Spit in your Eye VHS as a teenager in my home country. I was mostly excited to find the work that she's doing and respecting the fact that it seems like she's not really wanting her current passionate work to be overshadowed by her early background as a rockstar. To be fair what prompted me to write that ramble was another comment on this video of someone saying nonsensical things critizicing her adult career path and being rude to both her and the fans commenting.

I saw Talena in concert 23 years ago and still have the bass pick she threw in the audience. Now Dr. Atfield can still hold my attention for an hour and 23 minutes talking about baskets while having tea & cookies. I wonder if she still plays bass?

"What did 'savage' mean in 1600? It meant that you had free sex whenever you wanted. That you were a homosexual whenever you wanted. That you had transgender people everywhere. And that you showed skin. [...] Here's what the Jesuits say: that we were the kindest people they had ever come across to each other [...] Not the case for Europe, why do they call it coming out of the closet? Because there was a closet where their children and wives could be put and beat to death. 10% of the population of this country was murdered by the husbands and fathers of the very people of the women and children that were murdered. [...] We were horrified when we saw them. They murder their own. What a scary bunch of people. We got to change this around. And so we did eventually. [...] We turned you all into a bunch of Indians. Now we're fit for getting along." fragments from 22:29 - 26:05
