The main purpose of the channel is to present footage from Pathé Baby films which are relevant to local, social and industrial history. These were mainly excerpts from documentaries and newsreels intended for the cinema, which were then abridged for showing on home movie projectors. They became available from 1922 onwards, and many were still available in the 1930s, when come aspects of their technology became obsolescent. Many of the films were originally made much earlier than this, however, with some as early as 1906, and I have tried to date them as well as I can, using online databases. It seems likely that many the 35mm cinema versions have disappeared, so in these cases, the Pathé Baby versions have become a unique resource.

C'était déjà très moderne à l'époque, tout existait déjà. Voitures, trams, éclairages publiques, etc... Un siècle plus tard, on n'a rien inventé, on n'a fait qu'améliorer.

Fascinating. It all looks so peaceful and civilized and the people are well dressed. Nobody seems to be armed. I wonder if the Mau Maus had started their uprising when this was filmed.

It's not really about the Wades, when you think about it. It's about a beautiful country and its beautiful people, stripped of their rights as the rightful owners of their own land, subjected to serve and entertain the Wades at the whim of their aggressors, Great Britain itself. How ironic.

94 ans plus tard, quelle tristesse cette ville est devenue. Au point que nous n'allons même plus dans certains quartiers tellement on ne s'y sent plus en sécurité quand ce n'est tout simplement le fait de ne plus se sentir en Belgique.

Note the difference between the way women dressed on the Titanic in 1912 and how they looked 17 years later. So many cultural changes, largely though not entirely because of World War I (1914-1918) - partly technological (cars, telephones, radio, electric refrigerators), social (women voting, playing sports), probably a feeling among young people that they were trying to leave as much of the 19th century behind as possible!

The British did this all over the world. America, Australia, Africa. The manor houses of England were built with the wealth from resources of lands and people they conquered. It's amazing what a heavy footprint such a small country had in the world. Language is their longest lasting legacy.

Merci.

A small black jazz band is seen playing in the film but the music heard sounds like it is a large white dance orchestra. The music sounds like it was added later to the film. I wish I could hear the music the black jazz band was playing in the film.

It would have been a silent film when originally shown, but the music heard by the audience would have been from musicians on site in the theatre or a recording played on a phonograph.

Kenyans did not choose to live in Shanti towns. It's funny how you didn't record apartheid going on or the ongoing racism. You didn't even go near the small black children on their land. It's not this family's property. It belongs to a black kenyan family that was stolen as usual.
